8 is a big number in this game (DUH!).
427 divided by 8 is 53.375
This, curiously, is Stanley's age. We discover this by completing the secret "golden underwear" ending.

WHICH MEANS that the employees are being chosen by their age groups and kept in the environment that best suits them.

I don't think this could simply be a coincidence and please stop saying that it is because it's not I've figured it all out and it makes sense.
