FS Gr 746 Locomotives

Le locomotive del gruppo 746 vennero concepito in seguito alla fine della prima guerra mondiale, con l'intento di realizzare delle macchine che facessero fronte all'aumento del traffico ferroviario (specialmente quello pesante).
Queste locomotive rappresentano il culmine dello sviluppo della trazione ferroviaria a carbone italiana, avendo la caldaia più grande mai costruita ed il motore (da 1750cv) più potente mai equipaggiato.
10 locomotive di questo gruppo vennero equipaggiate con la distribuzione del tipo a valvole caprotti.
Vennero utilizzate principalmente alla testa di convogli accelerati e rapidi, specialmente lungo le arterie (come la direttissima roma - napoli) in cui era possibile procedere a velocità elevate.
Il declinò iniziò quando vennero immesse in esercizio locomotive elettriche quali le E326, E428 ed E626.

Due locomotive del gruppo sono preservate all'interno di musei.

The class 746 locomotives were conceived after the end of the First World War, with the intention of making machines that could cope with the increase in railway traffic (especially heavy traffic).
These locomotives represent the maximum level of steam traction development in Italy, having the largest boiler ever built and the most powerful engine (1750hp) ever equipped.
10 locomotives of this group were equipped with the distribution of caprotti valves type.
They were mainly used at the head of accelerated and rapid convoys, especially along the high speed lines (such as the direct rome - naples) where it was possible to run at maximum speed.
The decline began when electric locomotives such as the E326, E428 and E626 were put into operation.

Two locomotives of the group are preserved in museums.
