This short, simple campaign will teach you all the basics so you're ready to play Left 4 Dead 2 with friends and strangers. Run, jump, and shoot your way through self-guided educational modules that will answer every question you have about the game. There's a shooting range, an obstacle course, and more. You can also skip past most of the material if you're in a hurry. Compatible with up to 4 players!

This campaign is obviously very easy and short, so don't be surprised when you're done in 10 minutes. I originally created this tutorial for personal use, but I've decided to expand it and release it to the public as a community resource.

Also, there may be compatibility issues with other mods. Try disabling some add-ons and restarting Left 4 Dead 2 if you have problems.

The Unofficial Tutorial is split into distinct halves: Map 1 is purely educational with no zombie spawns, and Map 2 is a standard Left 4 Dead level to test you on what you've learned.

Map 1 features 4 self-guided courses on Basic Training, Zombies & Hazards, Weapons & Items, and Advanced Training. The modules on zombies and weapons are both optional, but they contain extremely detailed information and stats* -- even veteran players might learn something new!

Map 2, meanwhile, is a conventional L4D2 level with random zombie spawns that takes you through dream-like liminal spaces. You'll ultimately come to an elevator that lets you escape the training facility, but not until you survive a small onslaught of zombies first!

* Note that some of the listed weapon stats in the Unofficial Tutorial are approximate. All stats are derived from internal code (when available) and confirmed with in-game testing. These stats are generally accurate, but they might differ from what you've seen online before.

Map 1 contains useful facilities that even Left 4 Dead veterans might appreciate. There's a shooting range with access to every weapon in the game and moving targets, and there's a machine that can spawn any zombie type and put them in an invisible cage where they can't hurt you. You can use these to practice your combat skills without putting yourself in danger.

Oh, and Map 2 contains an easter egg that classic shooter fans will really love -- pinky promise! I implore you to find it.

The Unofficial Tutorial is fully playable on Steam Deck, tested by yours truly. Even at the highest graphics settings, I encountered no issues.
