Welcome to this guide on “How to escape when the hatch is closed”.

This trick will show you what to do when you are alone and the killer closed the hatch. Opening a door might not be possible depending on how close to each other they are, which this guide solves the issue.

You will learn how to use the door’s red light to your advantage and to judge if the trick can be performed by analyzing the map’s environment.

For this guide, I'm assuming you are comfortable getting a loadout ready, whichever suits your play style best. If you really want to improve your game, however, I suggest you read on!

This guide applies only when you are the last survivor in the match and the hatch is about to be closed (or is already closed).

In order to improve the overall Trial experience, Endgame Collapse is a mechanic that pressures all lingering Survivors to escape during a specific time frame before they get claimed and sacrificed by The Entity.

The Endgame Collapse raises the stakes, urging the Killer and the Survivors to make tough decisions while under the pressure of a timer.

Endgame Collapse can be activated twofold:

  • An Exit Gate was opened.

  • The Hatch was closed by the Killer.

Both the Killer and the Survivors can open an Exit Gate, the Killer will perform this interaction much faster than the Survivors and the action will reset if interrupted.

All remaining Generators will become blocked by the Entity to prevent any further Repair attempts.

A timer of 2 minutes will appear at the top of the screen, slowly ticking down. The timer slows to half speed whenever Survivors are in the Dying State or on a Hook, but never halts completely. The maximum time for which the Endgame Collapse can last is therefore 4 minutes.

Once the timer runs out, any Survivors remaining in the Trial Grounds will be sacrificed by The Entity.

Whenever the timer hits another quadrant of the bar, a bell will toll and announce the impending collapse drawing closer.

The endgame is where all your hard work pays off, and you escape — or not. It can be hard to practice the endgame, since often Killers will give up at this point if it seems like you’re going to win, and games where Survivors lose badly won’t have an endgame at all.

For the latter sections of the guide, I'll break the strategies into two parts: the full gate commitment (the traditional method), and the partial gate commitment (less utilized method). We’ll then go over what to do as the last Survivor if everyone else has died.

Once the final generator pops, you’ll be shown the location of both Exit Gates. If you’re lucky, they’ll be on opposite ends of the map. If you’re unlucky, they’ll be relatively close together. This strategy is effective regarding this specific scenario, or when there's a lot of obstruction between you and the killer's view, mostly in close-door maps.

If you don’t know the location of the hatch, or if you believe the Killer has probably seen the hatch, it’s better to try to escape through the Exit Gates instead. Most Killers will close the hatch when they find it, and the Killer closing the hatch will power both Exit Gates.

Try to fully open the gate and leave

  • You should only risk fully opening the gate if you’re certain the hatch is on the other side of the map, otherwise you’ll rarely open the gate in time.

  • That being said, if the two Exit Gates are close to one another, this is probably your only shot, so just go for it!

Reminder, a full commitment is often dangerous. You should firstly know or have a very objective assumption as to the distance of where the killer is when he closed the hatch, and rely solely on RNG, as to which gate he'll check first.

Open the gate to 24%, then hide, and finish opening the gate once the Killer checks it.

The exit gates have red lights that indicate their progress. If you progress the gate to just before the first light appears, and then hide, you can finish opening the gate once the Killer checks your gate for the first time. To do this, open the gate to just before halfway through the ‘A’ in “ESCAPE” above the progress bar, then hide.

  • Don’t hide in a nearby locker unless you have to — it’s too obvious. Instead, pick somewhere you can easily see the Killer, and ideally somewhere that’s not in between the two gates.

Once again yet another reminder, this sub-strategy is the most reliable, and often very effective when the exit gates are somewhat apart from each other.

The Concept of the Trick

To use this trick, you need to understand how the 2 doors work when powered, it's very simple:

  • The doors take 20 seconds to open.

  • 3 red lights show the progress of the door’s opening.

  • It takes +/- 3 seconds for the first light to turn on.

By faking the opening of a door, you will “force” the killer to look for you in the area when you are in fact long gone and opening the other door and escaping.

You will open a door until the first light turns on, then run to the other door and escape. At this stage of the game, the killer will heavily patrol the 2 doors back and forth. Depending on the map layout, you might not have time to fully open 1 until the killer comes back, resulting in certain death.

What we will do is open 1 door for +/- 3 seconds (until we see the first light), run to the other door NOT in a straight path since the killer will be using the most efficient path to patrol the 2 doors, and we don't want him to see us and finally, escape.

Probably the most important part of this trick is to understand the map layout.

  • Where are the 2 doors?

  • Are they far from each other?

  • Does the killer have a vision of the lever from a long distance?

  • Are the doors obstructed by walls/trees?

  • Are there many hiding spots around the door?

This will help you judge the situation and let you determine the best timing to start the trick.

Using Midwich as an example, we can see that by studying the map's layout, it'll be near impossible to apply the Full Gate Commitment strategy here. The effective method will be the partial one. By analyzing the layouts, we'll be able to determine which one is more suitable for each situation.

The Trick

We will call the door that we won’t open fully the “decoy” door and the door we will open the “escape” door for clarity.

The decoy door doesn't have to be a specific door, generally, you will be using the one closest to you.

Before opening it for +/- 3 seconds, you will need to locate the killer. You don't want to be opening the door while the killer is watching you or walking in your direction. Hide very close to the door if possible and wait for a visual cue of the killer and or its heartbeat. As soon as he walks away after checking your door (or as the heartbeat fades away), open the door until the first light turns. Then get away and reach for the “escape door”. Easy to do, as long as you are not crossing the killer’s path.

As soon as you reach the “escape” door, open it! The killer is looking for you at the “decoy” door, and you won't have any other chance to escape.

Now you pray to God that he doesn’t abandon the search and goes back to the “escape” door.

  • Internally, the Endgame Collapse is considered a DLC, titled "Nepal", coinciding with when the update was released to Dead by Daylight; in-between CHAPTER XI ("Mali") and CHAPTER XII ("Oman").

  • When the Endgame Collapse was first introduced, Killers experienced the same visual effects as Survivors. This had the effect of making tracking Scratch Marks or Pools of Blood near impossible as Killer towards the half-way point of the Collapse, prompting the Developers to tune the visual effects down for Killers to the current level.

  • Despite not making use of the Exit Gate Blockers, The Pig can stop Survivors from escaping through the Exit Gates altogether as an activated Reverse Bear Trap will instantly kill its Survivor if they attempt to leave.

During one of their weekly Streams, Developers Dave and Ash revealed that the Hatch has a deep connection to a particular Character.

  • Over the years, this has been attributed to be Vigo, given his ability to create things and "bend The Fog's irrefragable rules". The general consensus is that the Hatch was created by him.

Killers, who can place Traps or Props that have placement restrictions within a specific radius around the Hatch have their Power prompt disabled when inside that radius.

  • Since this behaviour is also present for the invisible Hatch, those Killers can attempt to locate it by paying attention to when their Power prompt disappears (or even the Bear Trap Aura for The Trapper).

  • Survivors can attempt to do the same when they carry an Item, which they will be unable to place at the location of the invisible Hatch.

I won't be the only one to be appreciative, but they will also be, too!

  • If you read it this far, I have something special to share with you, so don't go just yet! As a wholesome Nancy main, it's my duty to make this guide fun and exciting for you. Here's Beatriz's Special Tip For You:

    • Everyone always says this, but it holds true: it's just a game. Remember that these are random people who are also just trying to have fun and that nothing is personal. Once you've played Dead By Daylight for a very, very long time, it begins to only be about the competitive aspect and bad teammates.

    • When you first played, the game was a new experience where you were in an entertaining panic from running from the killer and trying to complete the objectives and save teammates. It wasn't about who has the better skill or who wins.

Thank you, and wishing you the best! Enjoy your trials!

Also, just for the sake of curiosity. An easter egg that many players must pass, The Golden Toolbox is present on some Realms added to Dead by Daylight since the release of Haddonfield. It is an Easter Egg, hidden in specific inaccessible locations on the maps in which it appears. As such, it cannot be obtained or interacted with in any way, serving instead as an intrinsic goal for observant, dedicated players. The existence of the Golden Toolbox was originally discovered at its Haddonfield location, where it is relatively easy to spot. Since then, subsequent toolbox appearances have become increasingly more well-hidden, and its location in The Underground Complex incorporates new functionality tied to the Endgame Collapse.

Okay, now that's truly it! Bye, bye! I hope this guide was helpful to you!

Great Job on the guide, but On a side note this doesn't work for killers with longer distance(Such as twins). With those types of killers you should always been on the lookout, for twins I suggest you do a quick circle for Victor and kcick him then run to the other door using an indirect pathing.

Amazing Guide! Only errors I seen was that you said it takes 15 seconds to open an exit gate when it takes 20. Also the first red light activates at 25% of an exit gates progress so you want to stop at 24% progress. But overall very informative.
