O-class Battlecruiser

The O-class was a class of three battlecruisers designed by the German Kriegsmarine prior to WW2 as a component of plan Z. In doctrine, these ships would’ve been successors to the P-class panzer-ships, which were themselves intended successors to the Deutschland class.

Earlier German battlecruisers of the WW1-era and the Scharnhorst class were designed to fight as a part of the main battlefleet, and as a result featured relatively heavy armour protection. However, the O-class departed from this tradition, and were designed purely as convoy raiders and as cruiser killers. The Kriegsmarine had hoped that by using battlecruisers as raiders, they would force the British to defend every convoy with capital ships rather than just cruisers, thus scattering the numerically superior Royal Navy. The O-class design reflected this mission goal; they had thin armour, sufficient to defend against 8-inch shells from enemy heavy cruisers but nothing more, while a very high speed allowed them to outrun any larger opponents. A main armament of six 38cm/15-inch guns was deemed to be better than the Deutschland’s 28cm/11-inch guns, and like other German capital ships, they would’ve carried a mixed secondary battery of 15cm and 10.5cm guns due to a lack of effective dual-purpose secondary guns at the time.

The three ships, codenamed O, P and Q, were approved in 1940 even as Kriegsmarine realised that they could not afford to build any. This design is a hypothetical interpretation of how the O-class would’ve appeared in 1944, with the original 3.7cm AA guns replaced by 5.5cm ones.
