If you don't care about your score, empathies are also useful (to a point).
And again, just in case, you can get souls by:
- completing scars & dreams
- beating bosses (only the 1st time in a given thread)
- talking to NPC enough (requires many lives but awards 500 souls per NPC)
- talking to Ladon the Dragon 6 times (500 souls too; requires beating Tubal then, in the same thread, coming back with 6 different heirs; can be done early if you don't mind sacrificing the heir that beat Tubal)
- buying the Strange Transaction upgrades in the Soul Shop (requires an increasing amount of ore & aether; I only recommend the first few levels if you want a souls boost early in the game, otherwise it's best left for later in the game as you'll need the resources)
If you beat a boss at NG+6 for the first time, it gives you the souls for all previous NG too.
