Situation After Latest Update
Hey all, you may or may not know that there was a big update recently for every Pixel Remaster. This update brings them to parity with their console releases, and includes an update to fonts which allows you to switch between a "Modernized" setting and a "Classic" setting. "Classic" refers to the pixelated font, while "Modernized" is the same font the games had previously.

Do Old Font Mods Work After The Update?

Short answer is yes, they work exactly as they used to. Which is fantastic because there are a lot of mods listed here.

There is one caveat, and that's that, if you're using an old font mod, you need to play the game with the "Modernized" font setting in the in-game configuration. If you set it to "Classic", you may see some font glitchiness. Nothing serious, in our experience, but it's there.

So to reiterate:
If you're using an old font mod, set the in-game configuration to "Modernized". And if you find the font mod isn't applying, go to the game configuration, then toggle the font setting to "Classic" and back to "Modernized". It should kick in by then.

Some fonts have been updated to fit the new format. Those mods will just require you to set the in-game font to the one they set it to use. There should be no quirks associated with these fonts, and I've created a new section for them.
How To Mod Fonts

Hate the default Pixel Remaster font? Yes, everyone does. That's why there are so many options for easily replacing it with one of the many custom fonts available!

Modding the font is one of the easiest mods to make of any Pixel Remaster and requires no extra plugins or custom loaders.

What You Need
  • You'll need something like 7-Zip[7-zip.org] to extract almost all of the files you download, especially .7z files.

Installation Instructions
  • If you navigate to the install folder for any Pixel Remaster (that's the folder which contains the game exe file, titled "FINAL FANTASY.exe"), you should see a folder named "FINAL FANTASY_Data" (this will also contain a roman numeral for the other PRs, like the exe).
  • Click into that folder, and you should see another folder called "StreamingAssets". Now click into that folder.
  • You should now see a bunch of files like font_de.bundle, font_en.manifest, etc, etc. These are all the font files, and the two letters next to each "font_" are the different language options.
  • But all you have to worry about is that this folder is where you will copy your custom font files. Just paste them into this folder and overwrite what was there. All font mods should come with a zip folder where you'll find all the files you need. Probably a font_en.bundle and a font_ja.bundle.

And that's all you have to do! If you're using a font mod that isn't updated, so it isn't in the section directly below this one, then you need to make sure the in-game configuration is set to "Modernized", or you may see some minor graphical issues with the font.

I recommend to make a backup of this folder before you mod it. The files are not very large. At least make copies of "font_en.bundle" and "font_ja.bundle" if you're modding English fonts. Just make sure you don't delete any of the other font files, as the game will not work otherwise. Just overwrite the fonts you're modding.

Now to the real meat of this -- the index! Here is an organized list of all the custom fonts available for use in any of the 6 Pixel Remasters. I've organized them by category, and roughly organized them within each category. On to the modding!

There's a lot here so please follow the guide index to the right to navigate to each category.
Updated Fonts
The following fonts have been updated to fit the current 2-font format of the Pixel Remasters. Old mods still work, but these have 2 font options available -- either one font is the one that was originally included in the game, or both fonts have been modded.

Closing Section

These are all the font mods I am aware of. If you have any that I missed, or any you'd like to submit, please comment and let me know.

When any new font mods are released, I will continue to keep this list updated. I know not all of the screenshots are pretty or consistent, but I made use of what I was given. As it'd be a lot more work to have to load up each and every one of them in my game and make better screenshots.

Any questions or corrections, let me know!

Nah, I'm fine with that. I like the font, but I have no problem using a different one. Just wanted to ask about it to see if I was the only one noticing that. Thanks for letting me know!

They got back to me pretty quickly. Unfortunately, this is just the reality of larger font sizes like this mod has. You have to sacrifice numbers displaying perfectly in order to have a font that's faithful to the original NES font in scale. So unfortunately, the only solution, if it bothers you enough, is to try another font. Sorry I can't bring you better news!

Alright thank you. I've forwarded your message to the modder.

I've tried both the old and newer (the dual-pack, with it set to "classic") versions, and they both have that issue. Unless its something on my end, it always gives me problems.

Which version are you using? The updated version? If you're not, are you setting it to "Modernized" in the in-game menu, and making sure it's set to that before rebooting the game?

If you are using the updated one, or if you're already doing what I described and outlined in this guide, I can send your report to the modder.

Just wanted to note: The Final Fantasy 1 NES font is very buggy. It works fine normally, but once you get into triple-digits in shops or quad-digits in HP, it stops displaying correctly. (ie it'll show your 4-digit HP value as a 3-digit HP value)

The modding process should be the same. The only difference is there are now two font files in the bundle. One of them corresponds to the pixel font and one to the original font. So all you should have to do is replace the original, the same way you did before.

The reason the old font mods have the quirk they do is that they only have 1 font file inside, so the game tries to fetch the pixel font and it's not there. So just making the mod again the same way, but using the current font bundle as a base, should do the trick.

Hi all, this is Lauderdizzle, I made the Kefkaesque font. How can we update an old font to the new 2-font format? It'd be great to set it so that my font is used with the "Modern" setting, while the "Classic" font can still be left in the game.

Y is right next to T on the keyboard. It's a simple typo my friend. Not intentional. Steam just doesn't let you edit your comments and I didn't feel like deleting it and making a new one.

I have nothing to add but this. Its "Up to DATE" not up to day. I have seen this said incorrectly 3 times in the last 2 hours. Is this the new Breath and Breathe?
