[Spoilers] Easy Phreak's Music Puzzles
By Vlad_Tech
A cheesy and easy guide to Phreak's music puzzle. Since I had trouble with it, I figured you might too.

Introduction
Greetings everyone, I made this guide because I have tinnitus and I found the puzzle to be as fun as pulling teeth. I'm sure there's other people that have non-deafening hearing issues or memory issues that could benefit from this, so here we go, first guide... please be gentle ._.

You will need a recording program to get this going, I recommend OBS Studio, link below, but any recording software that allows you to access your files easily should work, even one that records sounds. You could even use your phone and speakers.

Starting the quest
If you need to start the quest pester this guy in Core City.

Then go here with nightvision goggles, go up to the rail and complete the next area.

Boxes
Once you have the orange box you can begin to open the safehouses around underrail. Activate a emergency phone and plug in the box, it's time for a bad puzzle!

Boxes will have:
  • 3 stages you have to complete, if you fail one you have to start over.(great design)
  • A group of "icons" that will play a sound.
  • A preview mode, by pressing the buttons while the phone is plugged in, option 8.
  • Random static noises to distract you.
  • Icons that will not work in the preview mode.

When you plug in the phone for the first time it will play SIX tones. These are what you need to replicate and failing even one tone resets all progress on that box. If you need to reset it, click random ones until you hear the shock noise. We will be burning this first set on the below steps so completely ignore it.
Doing The Puzzle
Be sure to disable the in game music to make this a little easier, and clear out any pests like dogs, or anything that would annoy you during this process.

Step 1: Plug in the box.

Step 2: Go to the preview mode(option 8) and find out which buttons have interference and can't be heard.

Step 3: Go back puzzle and record the options that have interference, name the files so you wont forget.(or don't, your business)

Step 4: Reset the puzzle by pressing options until you hear the shock.

Step 5: Record the playback/option 1, be sure to get all 6 tones.

Step 6: Go back into the preview mode and open your new file, I use a browser so I can have multiple easily accessible tabs.

Step 7: Compare the options to the recording and jot down the ones that match. Keep in mind some of them will be similar. This is where the recordings come in as you can listen to the sounds you will not have access to.

Step 8: Enter them in and the "glow" color of the buttons in the text box will change to the next tier, then repeat until complete.

If I can do it with my messed up ear, I'm sure you can do it.
If you have trouble, just don't phreak out ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) and give it another try.

There's a mod on Nexus ("Easier phreak sounds") that replaces the tones with text-to-speech numbers. It's still a sorry excuse for a puzzle, but at least then it doesn't rely on the player having the physical ability to hear and distinguish between tones. I'm still baffled that the devs didn't consider accessibility here and provide alternate ways to finish the Phreak questline.

Wish someone gets a map together with all the phone locations :(
