The Idea
The inspiration for this guide is a video made on the youtube channel Mutant Mods, where he tries to turn DOOM II into a roguelike. That's why I ask you to watch his video, and this is also a way to check how the mod will work.

This guide will help you turn DOOM II into a Roguelike, or rather a Roguelite. The mods add new enemies, randomly generated levels, classes, new weapons, armor, and items, gameplay changes, and a card system to add more randomness.

This mod also work with DOOM: Ultimate Edition, just follow the tutorial but when DOOM II it's metioned replace for DOOM. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Download GZDOOM and Setting Up
Download GZDOOM from the official website. Check the correct version of your system, and click it for donwload.

Link: GZDOOM[zdoom.org]

When the download is complete, grab the zipped file and extract it into the DOOM II: Hell on Earth "Rerelease" folder.

To find the folder right click on DOOM II: Hell on Earth > properties > Local Archives > Search > Open Rerelease folder then extract

Look for "DOOM II.exe" and "gzdoom.exe" files. Change the name from "DOOM II.exe" to "DOOM II-BACKUP" and change it to "DOOM II.exe" that way you can run it directly from Steam and you can also open the steam overlay and take screenshots etc.

After that create a folder named "mods". This folder will be where we will place the mods.

Now Start "DOOM II.exe" the GZDOOM port will start because of the name change, after the game open in the menu, close it.

In the game folder look for a .ini file that was created after closing the game, its name will be something like gzdoom-[YOUR PC USERNAME].ini

My file

Open it with notepad and search for "[doom.id.doom2.Autoload]"

Below this section will be placed information about the mods, so leave this file open and go to the next step.

Download DoomRL Arsenal & Monster Pack
This mod will add Classes, New Weapons, Itens, Armors, Monsters etc

Enter the following page and search for the download links for DoomRL Arsenal and Monster Pack. The downloaded files will be in .pk3 format, one for DoomRL Arsenal and other for Monster Pack. Put them in the "mods" folder created earlier.

Link: DoomRL Arsenal and Monster Pack[forum.zdoom.org]

For the mod to be activated within the game it is necessary to add it to the gzdoom .ini file mentioned above.

Under [doom.id.doom2.Autoload]" for each added mod put at the beginning "Path=". After the "=" paste the path of "mods" folder and the name of the pk3 mod file (dont forget the .pk3) and save it. Do this for each added mod or map.

Check the image and text bellow for reference.

Example: "Path=D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Doom 2\rerelease\mods\DoomRL_Arsenal_1.1.5.pk3"

CMM DoomRLA Classes
More Classes, believe in me it's get better!

Enter the following page and download the mod (.pk3 file) and add it to the "mods" folder. Repeat the process of adding the information to the gzdoom .ini file

Corruption Cards
"Corruption Cards is a gameplay mod for Doom (and others) which presents the player with three random cards each level. These cards effect the gameplay in different ways, some more subtle than others."

Donwload the mod and again put in the "mods" folder and add in the .ini file the information.

Obsidian Map Generator
This program will create randomly generated levels. It is possible to generate only one level, a few levels, an episode, and the whole game randomly generated!

Link: Obsidian Map Generator [github.com]

Unzip, you can copy and paste the Obsidian folder in the Doom II steam folder (Rerelease), then run "obsidian.exe", the program will show a tutorial, read it carefully, the program is not difficult to configure and create levels. If you are lost, click in the "?" besides the part that will be modified and a description will appear.

Create some test levels and see if there are too few enemies or if the map is too big etc and adjust it to suit your needs. But also create unusual levels and try to finish!!!

In the fisrt column check if the "Game" and "Engine" are correct, in this case, the game should be Doom 2 and engine ZDoom Family.

After configuring the map click on "Build", save it in the folder where gzdoom was extracted (Rerelease) and wait for the program to create the ".wad" file. There are two ways to activate the map in-game:

1. Click and drag the .wad file and drop it on top of DOOM II.exe (formerly gzdoom.exe). And the game will run with the new map ready to be played. However, this way the Steam Overlay (Screenshots etc) will not open!

2. Do the same process of adding the path information as with the .pk3 files but now with the .wad file. Add the .wad path in the .ini gzdoom file, save it and launch the game from Steam, in this way features like steam overlay will work perfectly. Check image below:

THANK YOU!!!

Hi! Let's review some points:

- Make sure you extracted GZDoom in the game folder on steam where the original executable is

(Steam/steamapps/common/Doom 2/rerelease)

- Make sure you started gzdoom.exe and not the Steam version.

Since you are having problems I recommend starting gzdoom.exe first and then rename it to Doom II.exe

- In the folder where GZDoom was extracted look for a file with the name "gzdoom-[YOUR PC USERNAME].ini".

It may be that the ".ini" does not appear at the end due to your computer settings. Then look for a file that starts with "gzdoom-" and check in the properties if it is .ini

- If the problem persists, uninstall doom 2 and delete the folder. Install again and follow the steps again.

There are several tutorials on how to install GZDoom. If the error persists, I suggest you search for another

I hope I helped you. If you still have questions, you can ask in the comments
