How to use tower shields + spears&knives

Many people think that Tower shields are inferior to the round shields, that only may be if you value the parry bonus.

So tower shields seem to be better paired with Spears and Knives. Here's why.
both weapons have an ability to swing quicker than the swords, axes, and maces. allowing you the ability to block right after quicker. this allows you to sucker punch enemies before or during them swinging on you. So you usually can get the first hit off and block their hit as well and continue that chain.

Another pro side to the tower shield is its immense knock back it has. Tower shields have more Block force which equals knock back. most of them come with 100 block force (black metal tower shield having 150) how do you take advantage of this knock back? The spear.
you can use the spear special ability and throw it into enemies who have been knock backed.

you can take a knife paired with multiple spears (Until iron gate allows spears/javelins to be stacked) and go out with a tower shield and make use of some of the weapons you may not have liked when trying out this game

i apologize if the grammar is bad, or if the guide is a little weird. i just wanted to present a different play style to other player.
i know that i never liked spears or knives in my first play though and never touched the tower shields, but i never found to much info on how to properly implement these weapons.
but give Spears and knives a try paired with the tower shield and see how it is.

Coming back 3 years later, I want to share what I learned in the meantime.

You basically have three choices in Valheim, on how to deal with enemies in combat. Either you just Block attacks by pressing and holding block, or you try to Parry attacks by timed pressing block or... you just Dodge Roll attacks by holding block and pressing space at the right time.

Like this guide says, holding a Tower Shield that has a ton block force and just blocking hits can be used in combination with the smaller, faster weapons really well. It also helps that we now have more knives and spears in the game then 3 years ago, lol.

Another thing you can do, if you don't have a big Tower Shield that can block an enemies hit(think 2 star enemies) you can opt to just dodge roll them, enemies don't use combos on you but single hits.
I think using a knife or spear combined with Dodge Rolling might work wonders too.

Very late to this thread as I'm reviewing existing weapon guides before I make my own. You are right that tower shield plus spear throw is a great combo. So is tower shield knockback + knife dive (alt fire).

Honestly, they should have thought out more of the stuff they put into their game. Just like here there are 3 shield types in the game... there is little reason to use the bucklers or the tower shields.
I already tried what you suggest here... but honestly... you can do similar with a normal shield then with the tower shield.

The comparison troll VS black metal tower shield is hilarious. What is the point of comparing a early game enemy to a late game tower shield? You would need to take the wooden tower shield or the bone tower shield... and then compare.
Simply blocking... I can use just the black metal shield and block a 0* troll. For golems it is the same.

depends on the tower shield. for instance, the beginning wooden tower shield vs troll doesn't do anything, but if you have a black metal tower shield vs troll, it will stop the hit, but i don't believe trolls or Golems will get knocked back from it
