DEFEAT Eater of Worlds/Brain of Chtojwvlih and then craft a Nightmare Pickaxe and then go down to hell, mine Hellstone (found in the ash below the hell buildings), mix lava with water to make obsidian and then mine it and finally, with 4 Hellstone ore and 1 Obsidian you can craft a Hellstone Bar. You'll need 20 for a Molten Pickaxe.
