A Guide for Hunting Crown Sized Monsters

As you know, there is no monetary gain or other benefits for me personally by making these guides here on Steam. Yet I still feel encouraged with all the upvotes people have given me for my first Monster Hunter Rise guide.

It may look strange to you and many others, why I am spending 20-50 hours per guide with all the play-testing and arranging to make them look and feel the way they are (another reason which weights heavy is the fact that English is not my native tongue - sorry for my bad English), yet I am still enjoying Monster Hunter Rise to the fullest and I feel happy that I can share that joy with you.

Writing a guide may reduce my overall personal playtime, but I am incredibly happy whenever I see at the forums a mention that it had helped at least one of you in some way. It then feels somewhat like: while I am spending my time writing, I am still playing with You together at some point.

Unlike my previous guides for Rampage or Upgrade Items this one might not be looking like much. I hope it still helps You in your endeavour when you go after a certain achievement or just for completion of your guild card's sake. With that written:

How This Guide Works

What are Crowns?

When we talk about crowns 👑, we talk about monsters which are especially small or especially large. In Monster Hunter the size of monsters are normally randomly generated between a bottom and an upper limit. While for normal hunts the sizes usually do not matter, they can be an indicator for a monster's strength and constitution. Especially with event monsters you will notice such differences. Hunting for crown sized monsters is completely optional and in general unnecessary. It is more a kind of extra achievement a Monster Hunter can go after.



This guide is made as a list, by pointing you towards each monster's relevant quest. While for any quest a monster size is randomly generated, the crown sized monsters can be only found with certain specific quests. Use the following hints to make the best use of this guide:

a) Use the Search-Function of Your Browser

For most users with PC it is a Control+F combination, which opens up a search window in which you can put in your search terms. Simply type e.g. "Rathalos" to show all mentioned crown related quests which includes the appearance of "Rathalos".

b) Check Guide Version = Game Version and Update Date

This guide is made for the game version 3.9.1.0 and has been updated for version 16.0.1.0.
You can check on the date when this guide was updated the last time usually by the left / menu.
While there is rarely ever a change which affects the mentioned quests and their chance in percentage, over the time there might be new event quests with special chances to acquire crowns. So, if you happen to do all event quests to begin with, you can rely with ease on the information you find here without fearing on missing out much.

c) Introduction Quests and Event Quests

The general rule of thumb is, that the regular highest chance, 3% for Small and Large, to encounter a crown size monster to slay is with their introduction quest on the Gathering Hub aka the first quest for them to appear within the list in High Rank. Other quests, mainly dual or triple hunts (quests with more than one target) give in general a 1% Chance.

Event Quests are considered very special, as they come with very special features which can grant a much higher chance for crowns.

Example: ✨ Event High Rank Lv 6★ The Blue Bomber's Best Bud
It is a special collaboration event which references "Rush", the dog companion of classic "Rockman". You can not only acquire a special Palamute Layered Armour, but the Zinogre you meet there is a special "puppy sized" version, which is always a 100% Small Crown due to the very special event feature of having a Zinogre in a small size, far beyond the normal existing boundaries of the random number generator.

d) Master Rank

With the release of the Sunbreak expansion, it has gotten much easier to achieve crowns. 👑
Those who have gotten their crowns achievements before can feel pride in the extraordinary hard challenge they did overcome to manage that. Now new challenges await you!

The 🌟 Master Rank, 🧍‍♀️🧍 Follower and 👹 Anomaly quests are part of the Sunbreak expansion.

e) Follower Quests

While not stated explicitly, 🧍‍♀️🧍 Follower Quests have an increased chance (6% for Small / 10% for Large) for quest (single) target monsters crowns in general. I focus in this guide on general quests which are not limited to Singleplayer, unless a 🧍‍♀️🧍 Follower Quest has a much better chance to get a crown.

Should you find it easier to hunt with a 🧍‍♀️🧍 Follower, go for it!
Just make sure that the 🧍‍♀️🧍 Follower Quest's target monster is the one you are looking for.

About the Chances for Crowns in Sunbreak Expansion

A pattern which has been already seen with the base game can be recognised in regards of higher chances for crowns with the Introduction Quests of the monsters. It also seems that the developers are trying to make the hunts for crowns easier by applying the increased chances for 🧍‍♀️🧍 Follower Quests which have the target monster.

The rule of thumb here would be something like this:
6% for Small and 10% for Large for all 🌟 Introduction Quests, 🧍‍♀️🧍 Follower Quests and 👹 Anomaly Quests which introduce the target monsters' for the first time* as Anomaly / Afflicted variant.

*not to be mistaken with Anomaly Investigations quests.

Like before I recommend you to stay tuned for upcoming free title updates which might offer special ✨ Event Quests again with increased chances for crowns. 👑

Veteran's Tips

With a good eyes' measure you can learn to tell whether a monster size is special or not. With enough training it is easy to return from a quest before attacking a monster, whenever you are just focusing on getting a crown sized target and you are certain about its not so special size. Making it less a chore fighting a monster again and again when you are certain the result will not be as desired.

Do not despair, as it usually does not take too long until you achieve crowns.



Even if its entirely possible for not getting a crown sized monster even after 1000 hunts...

It is best if you combine crown hunting with gathering for certain armour and weapons material. Also make sure to rotate between monsters and quests whenever possible, so you do not focus too long on the same target. Going after all crowns can be a tedious achievement - but if you do it right, it can be fun as well! And there is always a good chance that by time an event quest might be introduced to help you with just the crown you are still missing.

Reminder: Introduction Quests

Please keep in mind that the quests I have mentioned are those with the highest chances.

While it makes sense when you have none of the crowns for the monsters in Those Crowned Apex e.g. yet to do that quest specifically, it can become tedious fighting them over and over again when you are just after a crown for a specific one among those. In that case go for their High Rank Introduction Quests. Apex monster introduction quests become available in High Rank after you have encountered them at least once during Rampage.

The chances are less, but you do not have to fight e.g. Apex Mizutsune and Apex Rathalos again and again just to check if the Apex Zinogre has the right size when you just miss the last one.

In fact: it might be for some hunters less stressful to hunt one crown after another with taking measure per sight, rather than having to deal with a triple hunt repeatingly.

You certainly have noticed already that Rondine is offering hanging scrolls for Your Room (House) to use as decorations. Hanging scrolls of monsters are in general unlocked by defeating a monster ten times. You probably already did that too for one of the more rare achievements.



But there are also certain - not-achievements-related - guild cards title to unlock for beating a monster a certain amount of time. Here are some details about how often you need to defeat monsters to unlock all available monster-related titles.
