The Fall: Walkthrough Guide

Introduction
The Fall is a 2D scroller game where you play as A.R.I.D who is a pilot suit AI. At the beginning of the game you crash on an unknown planet. Your primary objective is to acquire medical attention for your pilot who's state of health is unknown.



The normal health receptor sensors were damaged when you crashed on the planet so you can't tell what the pilot's vitals are. So your plan is to get medical attention from whatever facility it is you've crash landed in at any cost! Time for game on!



Hints / Tips
  • When shooting always aim for the head, you get more damage points.
  • When in a fire fight bots tend to shoot in groups, hide for their firing sequence and then return fire before they hide.
  • If in doubt, try consulting your inventory. What sort of item would help you in the real world and where would you go for that.
  • Don't worry about dying, the respawn system is pretty good in that it doesn't seem to take you particularly far back from where you were.
  • Finally - many of these challenges in the game, such as the merits, can be done in any order. I've just picked the order in which to tell them that made the most sense to me.

Section 1 : The Cavern
Level 1 : The Cavern

1. Head right along the tunnel using the right shoulder button / keyboard equivalent to pick up the micro-spanner from the red tool box and then use that to unscrew the robotic arm on the pile of robotic scrap. Then head to the end of the tunnel where you encounter a security locked door. There is a lift card on the console, use the arm to grab it.

2. Head back through the tunnel towards the starting point, and head left to a second lift. Use the lift and ride it up to the next floor.



When the lift reaches the next floor head left, grabbing the metal pan on the way, and you'll read a room at which point you will be interrogated.

3. Take the interrogation however you like, anyway it results in you being deemed appropriate to deactivate, as a result you become able to activate your networking suite (under the start button menu).

4. Head back down the lift and use your new networking ability to network with the AI/Human on the telegraph pole not far from the security lift. He'll tell you many things including; your camouflage system will trick the security system on the lift and that his gun is downstairs with some wild animal.

5. Fill up the metal pan with some of the Human's blood and head left towards the second lift. Activate the lift then quickly get off by heading right. When the lift has risen head below. The animal's lair is at the end of the tunnel to the right. To lure it out of its cave you use the blood filled saucepan on the pile of bones and pickings just a bit left of the cave. Then retreat so that it is just on the right edge of the screen. The animal will move out, use the networking protocol to access the gun on the animal. (Spoiler: It goes off killing the animal)

6. Pick up the gun and head back left through the cave - you're about to get an in game combat tutorial!

7. Once you've dealt with the droids head back up one floor using the ledges beneath the lift area. (Note: if you jump at an edge/overhang then ARID will grab the edge of a ledge and can pull herself up)



8. Head back to the AI/Human on the telegraph pole and shoot the winch to bring him down. Extract his power cell from him and use it to power up the security console. Step into the scanning beam to activate the gun turret, it then proceeds to shoot you until it gives you until your drastic lot of shield capacity prompts your A.R.I.D OS to update permitted you the use of the camouflage protocol. Use it to become invisible (Note: while using camouflage you cannot move). Exit the scanning area.



9. Once outside the area, head back inside using the activate camouflage to avoid the scanner beam then use the lift card to head up in the secure lift to the next area.
Section 2 : Depurposing
1. Head out of the lift and along the corridor to the right. Once you've headed up the ramp you'll end up in a firefight, use both the active camouflage and cover to work your way through. You'll then encounter an entryway with collapsed rubble on preventing you from going any further right. If you look up you'll find a gap in the roof, jump up here on the right hand side of the gap.

2. Kill the droid and continue right along the corridor until you come to the "security panel" and "a simple panel with a microphone, speaker and dial pad" (A telephone). Interact with it to get information, the AI will tell you that the facility was/is a decommissioning centre. Eventually you'll chat all there is and you'll end up saying you don't want to be repurposed which creates an alarm and an attack droid comes from the left. Kill this droid.

3. After the combat head to where the droid was stationed (Note: a new droid comes in to replace him so you can fight droids all day if you want!)

4. Head back to the phone panel again and chat to the administrator, use the "disengage" option and then immediately use the camouflage to turn invisible.



The security droid is unable to detect you so activates the diagnostic equipment. This takes the form of a small hovering robot which proceeds to scan all the equipment in the room. Look above the droid and there is a loose roof tile, shoot it. It drops to the floor giving you access to electrical cabling. You can then interact with this to plug it into the console to power it up. This enables you to head through the previously locked door to the right.



5. Exploring the room you find human bodies at the end, head back through to the original area with the telephone and talk to the administrator again. "Acquire Data: Bodies". You then get the option to submit yourself for evaluation. Enter the lift.

Section 3 : Evaluation (Merits 1 - 4)
1. After you exit the lift the administrator tells you, you need 8 points from this area to enable you to head upstairs to the medical area so you can cure your pilot.

2. Head left into the first house, in the first room you are informed that you should make the house look pretty and generally cater to the family's needs. There are four tasks in this house:

  • Cleaning the upstairs bedroom
  • Make a meal in the kitchen
  • Beautification of the house
  • Comforting the crying baby

3. To clean the bedroom head back to the first room, look just by the door and you will find a shoe box with a plastic shoe cover inside. Head upstairs and put the plastic shoe cover on the scanner unit to prevent it from accurately sampling the room and then use the room console. Initiate the test on the room console, the scanner will attempt to scan the room, find it clean because the scanner is covered and pass you on the test for 1 merit point. Afterwards re-interact with the scanner to retrieve the plastic shoe bag.

4. Head downstairs into the kitchen and interact with the console. It tells you to make some food and to do so, head out and right along the level to the grocery store. As you exit you end up encountering several security bots resulting in a firefight. Heading all the way to the right of the level you'll find the grocery store, however you'll find it has been long since ransacked.

Head to the far right of the store and look up at the ceiling you'll find a fragile glass roof. Shoot it. Beneath will be a large slug and a human body. Shoot the slugs to release the body's possessions to the floor.



(Note: you'll get a pop up message when you've shot enough slugs saying that shooting them is ineffective. ADDITION: You'll need to collect the slug blood in the empty jar from the first room of the house now as well as it won't be available later). You'll find a gold coin. After this use the lift just to the left of the store to head up one floor. Head right and into the building at the end, here you'll find a work bench, use it to pound the gold coin into conductive wire.

Head back downstairs to the grocery store and install the gold wire into the circuit box at the entrance to the grocery store. This repairs the singular light. Shoot the loose ceiling panel to the left of the light to cause the light to swing and shine directly at the slugs where the body is in the ceiling. As they do this several more items drop; a decaying hand and a decaying head. Exit the shop and head back towards the house, you'll encounter more security droids.

Head to the kitchen and place the decaying human head onto the table and use the scanner to finish the task. It interprets the head as a suitable protein source as it contains animal proteins and passes you - nom nom nom!

5. To beautify the house first you'll need to head to the downstairs kitchen area and move the purple flowers from the kitchen to the front room. Whilst in the front room, pick up the empty jar from the table. The console will reject these flowers for being the wrong colour according to the season. Next head to the upper level via the lift and pick up the wire cutters then head back downstairs via the lift to the house and up to the second floor. Use the hand to open the access route to the attic - a ladder. Follow the corridor to the right and make use of the computer which tells you how each of the 4 merit tests in the house works. Then use the wire cutters to sever the network link to the computer. Then use the computer again, go into the beautify test and now manually set the season to winter so that purple flowers are the pass requirement.

6. For quieting the baby first head upstairs and use some of the green slug blood on the mushroom after heading left from the lift. This activates the mushrooms defence system. After this, head back into the house and up into the attic. Walk towards the mushroom, and then get back fast, as it activates. It expels a large cloud of acid which causes the kill pipe from the dust session to drop out of the ceiling over the baby merit area. From here it’s simple. First check that the plastic shoe cover is OFF the dust detector so that you'll fail the test. Next activate the baby simulation, then go and activate the dust checking simulation. The dust one will fail very quickly resulting in the termination sequence. Because the kill pipe is over the baby's bed however it sucks up the baby, essentially silencing the baby according to the audio detector.

Section 4 : Evaluation (Merits 5 - 7)
1. Once you've done with the baby detector head back up into the attic. Follow the passageway right, past the computers, picking up the super conductive gel and reading the note about how to apply it. From here you encounter a generator, turn it on and all the lights upstairs will come on. Continue moving right until you come up to a locked door with a handprint scanner, use the severed hand in the inventory to unlock the door and proceed up the ladder into what was the second floor from the original set up (where the house was downstairs and the place where you hammered out the gold coin was upstairs).

2. There are 4 merits on this floor:
  • Fixing the car
  • Escorting the elderly lady across the cars
  • Pushing the kid on the merry go round
  • Escorting dinner guests to the party
3. Fixing the car is the easier of the merits. Pick up the tire iron from the far right hand room where you came up. Talk to the console and then interact with the car removing the tire with tire iron and then again. Then interact with the human to pass.

4. Next helping the old lady. To do this keep following the level to the left until you reach the house with the party guests. Head into the back and you'll find a hand panel, use the decaying hand on it to unlock a ladder. Follow the ladder, down into a service tunnel and then back up where you'll encounter the caretaker. You get the opportunity to ask him some questions here. I'd advise top to bottom otherwise you're left hoping for answers. (Spoiler After he ditches you) He sends attack droids your way. Here you'll end up with your more rapid pistol firing skill. From there take out the 4 or more other guards and head down the corridor. Eventually you'll come to a generator, take out the enhanced battery cell.

From here head back down into the house with the party. Follow the level all the way to the right with the floor where you battered out the gold coin. Go down the ladder here and then insert the battery into the generator below. This makes all the cars upstairs faster. Head back upstairs back to the granny test console and activated the test and let gran go right ahead and try and cross the street without you. One of the cars hits her and jams the course but she becomes loose at the base. Interact to pick her up and then there is a short cut scene of you presenting her to the sensor at the end of the street.

5. Pushing the kid on the playground. Head back up into the attic area where you encounters the caretaker and head along the corridor to the right until you find the note about the high power energy cell. If you look up here using the flashlight you can see that the ladder is stuck. Shoot it to bring it down. Head up the cooling town by jumping and grabbing the ledge on the next part on the left. Go up then follow the tunnel right to the end. Then drop down to knock the spool or wire through the floor to the playground area. Use the wire cutters in your inventory to cut the spool of wire then wrap it around the base of the roundabout. Attach the other end to the car wheel you fixed earlier and you're ready.

First activate the child playground test then go and tell the man in the car to "give her a go", a short cut scene follows but you can imagine. The cardboard kid cut out ends up flying off!

6. Time for the party, head into the house and run the test. You'll fail whatever you do, the outcome is that something drops out of the vacuum sucker. A piece of bone drops to the floor, while a lab technician key card gets stuck in the vacuum sucker nozzle above you. Pick up the card and head outside for a conversational encounter with the caretaker.



After that it's combat time. Fight your way to the right, you'll be encountering overpowered units and normal combat droids. Keep heading right and use the technician card on the old ID tag reader next to the TV screen unit. You get played a short promo about the site. From there head right and use the lift. The mainframe will then ask ARID what she's doing and you can choose whether to tell him that the caretaker told you to go to the mainframe or whether you're going of your own accord. Proceed through the conversation then head downstairs in the lift.


Section 5 : Finding the Main Frame
1. When you leave the lift turn left now until you reach a computer bank with a personal assistant unit on the desk. Interact with it and read the entries. (Spoiler: the mainboard is in the employee lounge). Then head right and follow the corridor past the mainframe PC area into the laboratory area. (Note: Watch out the flash light makes the slugs attack you!) Pick up the glowing liquids then go to the PC which informs you these two liquids are very reactive. Head into the employee lounge beyond the laboratory and find where the journal indicated the mainboard may be - on the floor at the far end. Pour the superconductive liquid on the flood to highlight where the mainboard is. Pick up the mainboard and reinstall it at the Mainframe terminal.

2. The mainframe then tells you the terminal you need to override the final merit exam is down 2 stories in a flooded laboratory. He then tells you, when prompted, that you can get the juice to finish the emergency drain by sacrificing the power cells of all the robots in the background behind the mainframe computer by pressing the big red button.



There's an electrical surge activating the turbines, so the lifts and lights now work but the mainframe unit is now inoperable. Explore around and then head back to the lifts where you came down.

3. So you come downstairs and find that the Jaw Fish bites through a large metal wire to get a bug, going in the water is definitely a no go! Head back upstairs to where you saw the caretaker a second ago and look on the ground, you'll find an empty glass jar. Take it through to the coffee machine in the staff room, interact it with the coffee machine to fill it with syrup. Take the jar back downstairs and use it on the fireflies there. They form a spire above it. This is now an inventory item.



Place it on the wooden plank and you get a cut scene where ARID kicks the plank out. Then it's up to you to shoot that fish! After killing it wade into the water, the lift is broken but ARID then postulates that as the control panel is broken down here she may be able to fix it, use the network suite to connect to the console and override the matrix.

4. Find the jaw head fish, and use the kitchen knife to cut out the fishes innards. Then head upstairs in the lift. Place the fish guts in the shower "detergent" slot in the laboratory area after the Computer Mainframe and then, take a shower.



You now smell like the Jaw head fish, take the lift back down and use the lift on the second basement level to head down again to Basement level 2.

5. Once down there as you've showered in the fish guts you should be fine to wade through the water with the second Jaw fish in.



Communicate with the mainframe via the PC console. Then use the big red button to drain the room. Shoot the other Jaw Fish for an achievement and then take the lift down to Basement 3. Once in Basement 3 you get a brief cut scene showing the Hive slug mother. Shoot all the eggs to return the colony to a state of feeding, the quake also breaks a water main on Basement level 1.

6. First of all put one of the coloured liquids into the water main, it will then cause the mushrooms to change colour. The slug eats a mushroom and then enters the queen Hive slug turning her one colour. Then go to the pile of mushrooms on basement level 2 and treat them with the other colour liquid.



You'll then be treated to a short cut scene where the second colour of slug enters the Queen Hive slug and as a result blows up the queen Hive Slug.

7. Proceed behind the Queen Hive Slug to the main frame.
Section 6 : The Care Taker
1. After interacting with the mainframe to reset the pass parameters the care taker interrupts and seriously damages you.



Talk to the mainframe who's convinced to let you repair in one of the droid bays. However once you're inside the care taker decides to reformat the mainframe AI. Shoot the care taker immediately when you get out for a steam achievement. You then talk to the new mainframe AI who becomes convinced you're a threat and sends the combat droids against you. Follow the trail of coolant left by the AI up all the basement levels back on to the upper merit floors environment. It's worth letting your shield recharge before using each lift.



2. Continue to chase the Care taker by following his leaking coolant up ladders (it's a fairly easy trail to follow).

3. Eventually you come to an area with what looks like a motor, here you fight the care taker. It's a reasonably simple fight, when the care taker is either shooting or doing his jump attack engage your camouflage. When he becomes invisible run from him as him touching you will eliminate your shield. When he is having that jittering moment when his hologram makes him look like other people shoot him. In this way wear down his health.



The care taker will use the motor at the centre of the room to recover all his health. When the care taker is using the machine shoot the large rectangular point of power units to destroy the recharging machines. Then the care taker is gone for good when you chip his health down.



4. You'll get one hell of a cut scene interaction now between ARID and the Care Taker resulting in ARID's core OS being corrupted and removing the parameter to always tell the truth.

5. Head back down the way you came to the party to complete merit 8. At the party lie to all the responses now that you can resulting in the drunk person being much happier with your responses.

Section 7 : Exit
1. So now you've got all the merits you head to the exit door on the upper merit test floor (it's near the right hand end). You go up in the lift to the ground floor and head right. You're able to see the night sky outside now.



Interact with the large Domesticon screen linked to the new mainframe AI. Upon your request for medical facilities he directs you to head to the door to the right.

2. You proceed through a decontamination area into the medical bay where the Mainframe AI scans you, telling you now there is no human inside the suit. ARID then takes her helmet off to reveal no body inside the suit. At this point the mainframe AI called security on ARID while we get a cut scene of the remaining two of ARIDs function parameters being deleted followed by:

Well Done, you've complete the game though you may want to see some other guides for racking up all the achievements associated with the game.
Section 8 : Achievement Hunter
Ok so this part is for those people who really love nailing down all of the achievements in a game. I've been guilty of this too, but mostly I love picked up the rare ones which others haven't got because it looks good on my steam profile. So going to work through the list of all the Steam Achievements and tell you where to look and what to do as best as I can. At the bottom i'll post a grid with just the icons on so you can print that out and cross each one off as you work through.



"Allegory" is awarded for passing the first stage in the game. Moving from section 1 (in this guide) into the Domesticon recycling facility - easy as pie!



"Domesticated" is awarded for completing all of the domestic components of the 8 merit tasks. I.e. the ones that occur on the lower floor of the two used in the merit testing environment for; cleaning the upstairs bedroom, making a meal in the kitchen, beautifying the house and comforting the baby.



"Doesn't Learn" is awarded for deliberately failing multiple tests in the upper floor of the merit testing area - specifically for telling human's that they are wrong (which isn't the role of a domestic robot). So for example: you decide to tell the old lady who wants to cross the road that the playground is in the opposite direction and telling the Car driver that he is wrong about the car purring like a kitten. (I can't remember exactly what the car driver is wrong about.)



"Sadistic" is awarded as an extension of doesn't learn for being deliberately sadistic in the game. For example: when you enter the mainframe level. You get off the elevator and the first slug you see, you can chase it down the hallway with the light to earn the achievement.



"Tin Man" (I'm told) is achieved in section 5 : Finding the mainframe, in this guide. To get it all you need do is when prompted by the admin for the first time if you want to kill all the robots by draining their energy. Reply yes/do relevent action - really quickly!



"In a Barrel" is awarded for really pretty good reactions. When in section 5: Finding the mainframe there is a part where you lure the first jaw head fish to jump out of the water to eat the bugs. If you shoot the jaw head fish the first time it jumps jump then you get this achievement. So like I said, good reactions!



"Consider That a Divorice" is awarded for a similar move. In section 5: Finding the mainframe when you head downstairs to the second jaw head fish, it swims around you being very affectionate. Once you've drained the room it flaps around on the floor, shoot the second jaw head fish for the achievement "Consider That a Divorce".



"Regicide" is awarded when you "make a royal mess" which is when you blow up the HIve Slug queen.



"Ask Questions Later" is awarded if you immediately shoot the care taker after getting out of the repair pod in the Domesticon mainframe which the mainframe kindly let you inhabit.



"Fungicide" is awarded for dying due to fungal plant attacks. You can either do this on the way back up chasing the Caretaker (there is a room overgrown with mushrooms) or go up to the mushroom besides the playground and stand in the acid cloud until you die.



"Face off" is awarded after your fight with the care taker if after the dialogue cut scene you move up to the caretaker unit and well - shoot the care taker's face off.



"Mericful", by comparison, is awarded for not killing the care taker after wards and leaving the room. (What effect this might have on later episodes if he survives I don't know)



"On Second Thought..." is awarded on the last civic test after A.R.I.D gets the ability to lie. If you lie the first time, and then acknowledge the second time when you're being harassed.



"Validated" is awarded for completing all of the merit tasks (by lieing in the last one) and thus becomming validated as a demonstic AI.



"Diag-Gnostic" is awarded for retrieving all the logs in the game. This is a pretty simple achievement. You just need to find all the logs, so pieces of paper pinned to walls, PC terminals etc. Plugging together a map is kind of difficult given the size of the game and having to plug it together from screen shots.



"The Fall" is awarded for completing episode 1 of this game - simple.



"Military Machine" this is the most hard core achievement in the game and really has a component of luck to achieve. From the tag line "6 feet under" you need to kill 6 enemy combat bots (or other foes) in succession with no less than 1 second between kills, without taking any damage - easy enough, right?!

Any Suggestions people have to the best place would be great? My first thought would be;

* Upper floor of merit area (Time frame I can't recall - but it's towards the end of the game) you have to shoot your way from right to left and encounter 6 combat bots, here could be a good area to get off 6 head shots.

Note: If I'm wrong about any of these, I'm sorry. I've done it from memory for the most part, let me know if I've got anything wrong and I'll update it. Thanks! Finally, here's your chart for crossing your achievements off on!

@spencer98881 you need to drain the water first to be able to examine the fish. also if you don't have the knife yet you can't fillet it.

I can't do the car merit point because i had been upstairs earlier and used the tire iron to see if it would unlocking something but all that happened was that i lost the tire iron. Now that i have to do that merit point, i dont have the tire iron to remove the tire. Will i have to restart the whole game?

EXCELLENT waltkthrough - thanks for taking the time to piece all these details together!

However, one typo which I noticed: The achievement "Military Machine" is described as "…kill 6 enemy combat bots (or other foes) in succession with no less than 1 second between kills…".

This actually should be "no MORE than 1 second between kills" - correct? I'm sure most understand it as such, but figured a minor correction might benefit others.
