The japanese don't really have a phonetic for 'Th' sound it becomes becomes as 'su' sound very similar to a fast hard enunciation of the name 'Sue'
her name in Japanese is written as エアリス

Unless you would also suggest that the planet we live on ie Ears - Then her name is Aerith

The reason why this happened was a mistranslation in the original - this is not unigue with greats like

It's always been Aeris. You can hear her name being spoken in the Japanese version of Crisis Core. It's always been Aeris in the American FF7 as well.

In the german version it was Aeris, but in the remake, and in some original versions it was Aerith. So yeah, Aerith is the actual name and Aeris is just a deviation on the english version and the languages that based their localisation on the english instead of the japanese version.
