It is not impossible to create very complex and realistic lines, but you will need pencil, paper, and calculator in hand, make a sketch of your line and start calculating all the departure times of each train to ensure that everything will go smoothly. Some people use programs like jTrainGraph for creating this kind of timetable:

I only recommend these things if you want to go very deep into the game, though. In general the standard procedure is to try to create simple lines so that it is easy to determine "safe" departure times for all your trains.
