What is a Porbeagle Shark?
Porbeagle sharks are a species of mackerel shark in the familly Lamniade, Porbeagles are a ecological equivalent to salmon sharks.
Where Do They Live?
Porbeagle sharks live in the Northern Atlantic, Southern Pacific, Northern Antarctic, and Southern Indian Oceans. Porbeagles can be found at depths of 1360 meters (4460 ft).
Size and Weight
Porbeagles sharks can grow up to lengths of 11.5-11.7 feet long. Most, Porbeagles weigh 300 pounds.
An Interesting Behavior
Porbeagle sharks are the only shark species known to engage in playful behavior, like dogs. Porbeagles have been observed pushing floating objects and kelp, around chasing each other.
What Are They Known For?
Porbeagles are known for their white notch at the bottom of their dorsal fin, and their speed. Porbeagles are one of the fastest swimmers in the oceans reaching speeds of 20 mph and being able to fully jumping out of the water.
Diet
Porbeagle sharks have a diet of mackerel, herrring, hake, cod, and dogfish sharks.
Reproduction and Pups
Porbeagle sharks are ovovivparous like great white and salmon sharks. Porbeagle sharks have a litter of 1-5 pups after a pregnancy of 8-9 months. Porbeagle shark pups are usually 2.2-2.6 feet long at birth and usually have a diet of squid and as they get older they will start eating larger prey items.
Predators
Porbeagle sharks are the apex predators of their areas and have no known natural predators
Attacks
Even though Porbeagle sharks are related to short-fin mako and great white sharks, but they rarely attack humans. According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) Porbeagle sharks have only attacked two people, both of these attacks were non-fatal.
Fishing For Porbeagles
Porbeagle sharks were a prime target for fishing vessels from the 1950s to the 1990s for sharks steaks, but strict fishing laws were implemented to protect these sharks.
