Introduction
Hi, I'm not a high rank player but a casual player.

At the time of writing this guide I have 90 hours in Dead by Daylight and I'm rank Silver I for survivor and killer (rank 9 out of 20) but I watched a lot of videos online from rank 1 players, I applied what they said and indeed got the best perks.
1. How to Gain Bloodpoints
There are 4 main ways to gain Bloodpoints in Dead by Daylight plus a bonus one.

1. Play the game -> At the end of each game you'll gain bloodpoints based on how well you did.
2. Complete Daily Challenges
3. Complete Storyline Missions (Crescendo)
4: Promo Codes & Events. -> Occasionally Dead by Daylight developers may drop a promo code that if you introduce in the game you gain free bloodpoints or skins. Also occasionally, they may introduce events where you just gain bloodpoints by starting the game.

FUN FACT: I bought Dead by Daylight on 31st October during Halloween and got tons of bloodpoints at the result. Being my first time playing I thought every player gets that many bloodpoints when they log in the first time, and not knowing the game I spent all my bloodpoints in the wrong killer and survivor.

Casual player tip: If you don't want to bother with all that, just play the game as you please, you'll get bloodpoints without missions and archive. And check out this https://progameguides.com/dead-by-daylight/dead-by-daylight-codes/ from time to time to see if there are any available codes.
2. Survivor Level Up Plan
The best survivor level up plan, as far as I can tell, is the following:
The goal is to ensure you get as many bloodpoints as possible and the best perk possible. To ensure you will be able to create a competitive build as fast as possible.

The best perks in the game are:
- Prove Thyself (Dwight - amazing, Faster generators when co-op)
- Bond (Dwight, good not great, above-average but not top quality - see teammates)
- Dead Hard (King - amazing, Sprint)
- *We're Gonna Live Forever (King, good not great, mostly for farming Bloodpoints)
- Borrowed Time (Bill - Protects survivors after you unhooked them)
- Unbreakable (Bill - You can completely recover from the Dying state)
- Self-Care (Claudette - You can heal yourself although more slowly)
- Empathy (Claudette - You can see wounded survivors anywhere on the map)
- Botany Knowledge (Claudette - You heal others and yourself faster)
- Iron Will (Jake Park - lowers ground of pain, no sound at purple quality)
- Sprint Burst (Meg - when you start to run, sprint)
- Adrenaline (Meg - When the gates open, heal 1 health and get sprint)
- Urban Evasion (Nea) & Iron Will (Jake) combo (makes you good at hiding in bushes)
- Spinechill & Ressilience combo (Common - increases actions speed, including gen repair)
- Kindred (Common - survivors see each other when someone including you is hooked)
- Lightweight (Common - scratches dissapear faster)
- Soulguard (Cheryl Mason - after you're healed you can't be killed)
- Decisive Strike (Laurie Strod - can stab the killer and escape after being unhooked)
- Lithe (Feng Min - amazing, after you fast vault, sprint)
- Boon: Circle of Healing (Mikaela Reid - amazing, way better than Self-Care but not free)

*We're Gonna Live Forever is not a good perk, you hardly need the extra recovery speed for others while in the dying state, but it's the only survivor perk that allows you to double your Bloodpoints gain, as long as you unhook 4 survivors in the game, making it excellent for farming.

Luckly, in Dead by Daylight the free survivors have the majority of the best free perks in the game. Out of all these 20 great perks I listed, only 4 are from non-free survivors.

So, what's the plan to get a competitive build fast?
- Start with David King -> Get him to level 35 (unlock: *We're Gonna Live Forever (optional), Dead Hard).
- Follow up with Dwight -> Get him to level 35 (unlock: Bond, Prove Thyself)
- 3rd go for William Bill Overbeck -> Get him to level 40 (unlock: Borrowed Time, Unbreakable; do not unlock Left Behind)
- 4th is Claudette Morel -> Get her to level 40 (unlock: Empathy, Botany Knowledge, *Self-Care)

At this point, you're going to have: Bond, Prove Thyself, Dead Hard, Borrowed Time, Unbreakable, Empathy, Botany Knowledge, Self-Care as teachables. Together with common Kindred, Lightweight, Spinechill, Ressilience you'lI have pretty good & competitive perk builds that you can always switch perks with to fit your playstyle.

- 5th is Jake -> Get him to level 30 (unlock: Iron Will)
- 6th is Meg -> Get her to level 40 (unlock: Sprint Burst, Adrenaline; do not unlock Quick & Quiet)
- 7th is Nea -> Get her to level 35 (unlock: *Balanced Landing (optional), Urban Evasion)

*We're Gonna Live Forever -> As I said above, We're Gonna Live Forever is only good for farming but gameplay-wise is a bad perk, so it's up to you if you only want to keep David King as a farming character or make his perk teachable. I choose not to make We're Gonna Live Forever teachable.

The reason you should only unlock the strict necessary with teachables is that each unlocked teachable has a chance to appear in another character's Bloodweb, which means that the teachable you want has less chance to appear if you've unlocked all teachables. You want to be efficient with your time.

*Balanced Landing -> When it comes to an exhaustion (sprint) perk there are 3 main kings: Dead Hard, Sprint Burst and Lithe. People argue over which of the 3 is the best but Balanced Landing comes after them on the 4th place since it's more situational. It's up to you if you want to unlock it as a teachable or not.

*Self-Care -> Is a controversial perk but still used by rank 1 players. It used to be broken OP so they nerfed it to the ground. Nowdays it's better to use a Med-Kit item instead of Self-care, but if you want to use a Toolbox (helps with gen) or Flashlight (helps with killer) instead, then Self-care is a good alternative, as long as you don't go into the habbit of running in the corner of the map to heal yourself each time you're wounded.

Boon: Circle of Healing is a far better perk, so good it will probably be nerfed soon, so if you have Mikaela Reid or find Boon: Circle of Healing in the Shrine of Secrets go for it.

Some build suggestions:
1. Jake Park: Self-care, Dead Hard, Kindred, Prove Thyself. (focused on survival & doing gems)
2. Nea Karlson: Borrowed Time, Lithe, We're Gonna Live Forever, Lightweight. (focused on healing others; maybe experiment with Unbreakable / Kindred too).

For 1: Prove Thyself is one of the very few perks that allows you to do generators faster, but it only works when you co-op generators. If you don't like that you can swap with with something like Lightweight and have this build: Self-care, Dead Hard, Kindred, Lightweight.

Instead of Prove Thyself you can use Spinechill. Spinechill is a top level perk, except I can't use it, I'm simply not paying attention to it that often, give it a try to see if it works for you.

For 2: If you don't want the farm from We're Gonna Live Forever replace it with Empathy for map awareness. Borrowed Time is a must in this healing perk so you can actually save survivors. If you don't have Lithe you can use Dead Hard instead. Essentially, the healing build can be like the survival & gems build, except for Borrowed Time <-> Self-care difference. Borrowed Time, Dead Hard, Empathy, Lightweight.

Instead of We're Gonna Live Forever, you can also use something that would allow you escape chases: Spinechill, Adrenaline, Soulguard, Decisive Strike.

My current build is: Kindred (Common), Dead Hard (King), Empathy (Claudette) and Borrowed Time (Bill). But this is all on my playstyle, keep playing and find your build.

As I'm writing right now it's 11 December 2021 and patch 5.4.1, the meta may change in the future.

General Survivor Perk Building Advice:
1 Team Info Perk -> Kindred, Spinechill, Bond, Empathy, Alert, Aftercare.
1 Gen Info -> Deja Vu, Visionary, Rookie Spirit, Detective's Hunch. (eventually, after you learn the game well replace the gen info perk with something else)
1 Exhaustion -> Sprit Burst, Lithe, Dead Hard, Balanced Landing.
1 Proection/Utility -> A healing perk, an awareness perk or another team info: Borrowed Time, Decisive Strike, Self-Care, Inner Strength.
As you get better and better, you will use less information perks and more protection utility type of perks.
3. Killer Level Up Plan
The best killer level up plan, as far as I can tell, is the following:
Unlike survivors, killers are very different, so what perk may be great on one killer is terrible on another, however there are many killer perks that are generally good or at least better than others.

I suggest to first look at each killer's power (scroll down on this guide) and take the test for what killer is best for you (scroll down on this guide), then come up with an idea of what killer you want to be your main killer. Then look for ways to develop your perks around that killer. However, I came up with a general killer level up plan that is overall good for all killers.

Again, the goal is to ensure you get as many bloodpoints as possible and the best perk possible. To ensure you will be able to create a competitive build as fast as possible.

The best perks in the game are:
- Enduring (Hillbilly - reduces time of pallets stun)
- Lightborn (Hillbilly - you're immune to flashlight blindness)
- Tinkerer (Hillbilly - when a generator is 70% complete, hear it and get undetectable)
- Stridor (Nurse - survivors' breathing and ground of pain are louder)
- Thanatophobia (Nurse - for each injured survivor, survivors get -5% gen repair speed)
- A Nurse's Calling (Nurse - you can see survivors that are healing)
- Sloppy Butcher (Common - slows healing of people hit with M1, amazing on Nurse)
- Hex: No One Escapes Death (Common - faster and can insta-down after exit gates open)
- Barbecue & Chilli (Cannibal - when you hook a survivor, you see the rest and Bloodpoints farm)
- Discordance (Legion - when 2 survivors work on a generator, you can see them)
- Infectious Fright (Plague - when you down a survivor, you hear those close nearby)
- Corrupt Intervention (Plague - blocks 3 generators for being used for 3 minutes)
- Thrilling Tremors (Ghost Face - when pick surv, see gen worked and blocks non-worked)
- Save the Best for Last (Myers - m1 attack time reduction up to 8 tokens, 40%)
- Hex: Ruin (Hag - amazing, all generators automatically regress while not worked on)
- Hex: Devour Hope (Hag - if you manage to get 3 stacks, every hit becomes insta-kill)
- Monitor & Abuse (Doctor - reduces your terror radius outside of a chase, increases it in it)
- Overcharge (Doctor - after you hit a gen, the next survivor to work on it gets a hard skill check)
- Surveillance (Pig - see regressed generators not regressed anymore in yellow)
- Pop Goes the Weasel (Clown - after you hook someone, next gen kick's regress is huge)
- Hex: Undying (Blight - amazing, your hexes get a 2nd life)
- Deadlock (Cenobite - when a gen is done, second most prog gen is locked and you see it)
- Hex: Ruin (Hag) & Hex: Undying (Blight) combo (this combo is a beast, gamechanger)
- Hex: Devour Hope (Hag) & Hex: Undying (Blight) combo (another gamechanger)

Unfotunately for killers, only 8 out of this list of 22 best perks are from free characters. For the rest, you will either have to unlock the killers with 9.000 purples or buy the perks from the Shrine of Secrets with 2.000 purples.

Whatever works best of you, I suggest waiting until you get 9.000 to buy your favourite killer, but if you find a perk you want in the Shrine of Secrets, that saves you a lot of time for a competitive build.

Unlike the survivors, not all these top perks are created equal, they are all very good, but some truly stand out: Hex: Ruin (Hag), Hex: Undying (Blight), Discordance (Legion), Barbecue & Chilli (Cannibal), Sloppy Butcher (Common), Tinkerer (Hillbilly), Pop Goes the Weasel (Clown), Hex: Devour Hope (Hag), *Monitor & Abuse (Doctor). Especially the first 3 will bring your game to next level.

*Monitor & Abuse -> Is very good at lower levels, including my level rank 9, but useless as rank 1. The way it works is that it makes you more sneaky when not in a chase and more confusing when in a chase, but rank 1 players are not going to be fooled by it.

"Rank 1 is full of players playing Blight, Nurse or Spirit and running Hex: Ruin with Hex: Undying" - A rank 1 player I talked with.

So, what's the plan to get a competitive build fast?
- Do not even bother with the trapper he's one of the worst killers in the game.
- Ideally: Buy Leatherface DLC, start with Cannibal-> Get him to level 35 (unlock: Barbecue & Chilli for great farming and great utility; do not unlock Knock Out)
- Otherwise: Start wtih Hillbilly -> Get him to level 40 (unlock: Enduring, Lightborn, Tinkerer)
- 2nd is Nurse -> Get her to level 40 (unlock Stridor, Thantophobia, A Nurse's Calling)
- 3rd is the one you want main: Wrath, Huntress or the ones you played. Since now you have have the good skills from Hillbilly & Nurse. The other free killers don't have that good perks.

Meanwhile, look at the Shrine of Secrets to spend 2.000 purples for the following killer perks:
- Hex: Ruin (Hag -> all generators automatically regress while not worked on)
- Hex: Undying (Blight -> your hexes get a 2nd life)
- Discordance (Legion -> when 2 survivors work on a generator, you can see them)
- Barbecue & Chilli (Cannibal -> when you hook a survivor you see others plus Bloodpoints farm)
- Pop Goes the Weasel (Clown -> after you hook someone, next gen kick's regress is huge)
- Monitor & Abuse (Doctor -> reduces your terror radius outside of a chase, increase it in it)

There are some secondary good perks too, depending on your preference, consider buying them:
- Hex: Devour Hope (Hag -> if you manage to get 3 stacks, every hit becomes insta-kill)
- Save the Best for Last (Myers -> m1 attack time reduction up to 8 tokens, 40%)
- Corrupt Intervention (Plague -> blocks 3 generators for being used for 3 minutes)
- Infectious Fright (Plague -> when you down a survivor, you hear those close nearby)
- Thrilling Tremors (Ghost Face -> when pick surv, see gen worked and blocks non-worked)
- Surveillance (Pig -> see regressed generators not regressed anymore in yellow)
- Deadlock (Cenobite -> when a gen is done, second most prog gen is locked and you see it)

Some build suggestions:
Legion: Hex: Ruin (Hag), Discordance, A Nurse's Calling, Sloppy Butcher.
Wraith: Hex: Ruin (Hag), Discordance, Lightborn, Sloppy Butcher.

For 1: You need to buy Legion when you get 9.000 purples. You also need to either get lucky and find Hex: Ruin in the Shine of Secrets or buy the Hag if you'd like to play with her. If you can't get that, you can use Hex: No One Escapes Death instead. If you can get Hex: Undying (Blight) it would be amazing. Barbecue & Chilli is great, but unlikely. As well as Monitor & Abuse. While Tinkerer is a viable alternative to Discordance for gen doms.

Alternatively, I heard that Thantophobia works really great with Legion because he is able to injure survivors very quickly, making the most of the perk.

A viable strategy when playing against Legion is to simply not heal yourself, but that will make all survivors simply 1 hit kill. Which may work out great for you.

For 2: Maybe Surveillance instead of Discordance. Lightborn will help you defend yourself from survivors using Flashlights and Sloppy Butcher makes their healing longer after you hit them.

If you really want to go top, consider playing one of the top 3 killers in the game: Nurse, Spirit or Blight. I consider trying Blight afterwards as I find his power really cool. Or maybe the Oni as he is also close to the top tier of killers.

General Killer Perk Building Advice:
1. Gen regression -> Hex: Ruin, Pop Goes the Weasel, Corrupt Intervention.
1. Gen/survivor tracking -> Tinkerer, Discordance, Thrilling Tremors, Barbeque & Chilli.
2. Filler perks -> What is best for your killer, it can be something like: Brutal Strength, Hex: No One Escapes Death, Sloppy Butcher.
4. Shrine of Secrets
If you go to Store -> Shrine of Secrets, you can buy a teachable perks for 2.000 purples. It's a lot better than buying a whole survivor or killer and grinding until levels 30-40 if you only want to have that 1 teachable perk from him. The only exception being if you actually like and want to play that kille. Or if you have 2-3 good perks from him as you may pay 9.000 purples but you know you get them both/all 3 at once.
5. Unlocking New Killers and Survivors
Fortunately, Dead by Daylight isn't pay to win. With enough grind you can unlock almost all killers and survivors.

And since all survivors are essentially the same, you'll only be looking forward to unlocking killers. Play the free ones, then think of one killer you want to make your main and when you reach that 9.000 purple points unlock him. So you can essentially unlock 90% of the DLCs in game.

Unfortunately, is that almost. Licencend killers and survivors, meaning those taken from movies cannot be unlocked, they need to be bought with money as a DLC. Those companies the Dead by Daylight developers collabed with have to make some money some way.

Fortunately, even if you cannot unlock killers like Freddy or the Cannibal without paying for it, you can still find their perks in the Shrine of Secrets. Fortunately, the vast majority of the licenced killers are not top tier killers and their perks are not top tier perks. So you can still make a rank 1 competitive build without paying any more for a DLC, except maybe Leatherface DLC for the Cannibal but even that can be avoided if you find Barbeque & Chilli in the Shrine of Secrets, a perk that is often used in rank 1 and not for its farming, as the killer itself is quite average.
For survivors, as I said, they are essentially the same, and none of the licenced survivors have good perks so far, so you're not missing anything by not taking them.

The key word is - essentially. Survivors are pretty much the same, they only have 3 main differences: noise, size and camo.

Killers on the other hand are very different to one another, unique, so if you want to by something I suggest buying a killer.
As of now, my account is level 37 and I have 2.500 purple points. I spent 6.000 purple points on the Shrine of Secrets for good perks, so if I didn't I would have had 8.500 purples so far, almost enough to buy a killer or survivor.
6. Short Description of Free Killers' Powers
If you want to get to know the killers a bit better, here is a short summary of all the powers of all killers:

1. Trapper -> Starts the game with a few traps in his hand and there are many traps scattered across the map. You can set those traps to have the survivors fall in them and get trapped. But remember where you planted them, you can fall in your traps yourself. This killer is very bad as it requires a set up time and his power is not that overwhelming. He's essentially a M1 (mouse 1) killer with some traps next to it.

2. Wraith -> Sneaky, sneaky. You can ring the bell and turn invisible, when you are invisible you can't attack but also the survivors won't hear you. When you turn visible you make a nose and have a short sprit for a short amount of time.

3. Hillbilly -> You can activate a chainsaw and dash forward at a huge speed (300%?), but it's very hard to turn around when you do. Some high skilled players can move around a car with his dash making the best out of his power. You can also use his power to move across the map easliy. Just remember that when you do, everyone hears you.

4. Nurse -> Arguably the best killer in the game. And the most difficult to master. Hillbilly's skill cap is a joke compared to the Nurse. You are the slowest killer in the game, but instead you can teleport. You can teleport 2 times in a quick succession before getting tired and essentially stunned for like 3 seconds. Most people use the first blink to gain like of sight and the second blink to attack. And teleport, wait a bit, teleport, in order to move fast across the map. When you play against a Nurse, you either have a really bad player and win in no time, or a really good player and lose before you're able to do a few generators.

5. Huntress -> People say it's the best ranged killer in the game, I say her songs ruins everything, but this is not about my taste, she's in the top 5 best killers in the game. Her right click is a ranged attack. This is OP, but at the same time, you sing a lullaby all the time so all survivors can hear you coming.

These were the free killers: Trapper is terrible, Wraith is above average with a decent skill gap, Hillbilly is above average with a high skill gap, Nurse is the best killer in the whole game with an insanely huge skill gap, Huntress is one of the top killers in the game with good luck with your aim.

And since here's here, here's a few non-free killers:

6. Spirit -> Arguably the 2nd best killer in the game. Can fade out essentially becoming invisible but without the survivors knowing, and when she does she can't see survivors. She can hear them as well as see the grass moving and their marks but can't see them. When she attacks she leaves the fade phase. People say she has a huge skill gap but is a lot easier to use than the Nurse in my opinion.

7. Legion -> Can wound survivors very easy with his power, but cannot kill them with his power.

8. Deathslinger -> If you want to play an FPS game in Dead by Daylight. It's not what you think, it's not insta-kill.
7. What Killer is Best for You?
I did not create this quiz, a rank 1 player did, but it's really awesome:
https://www.otzdarva.com/whichkiller
It asks you questions about your playstyle and the result is what killer they think is best for you.

My results were:
1. Legion - Chaser, Low Tier, Single power, low skill, easy mechanics, decent add-ons, fine without add-ons, easy to pick up, great perks, standard gameplay.
2. Oni - Chaser, High Tier, Medium power, medium skill, average mechanics, decent add-ons, fine without add-ons, medium to pick up, awful perks, standard gameplay.
3. Cannibal - Chaser, Mid Tier, Single power, low skill, average mechanics, powerful add-ons, fine without add-ons, easy to pick up, great perks, standard gameplay.
4. Wraith - Stealth, Mid Tier, Single power, low skill, easy mechanics, decent add-ons, fine without add-ons, easy to pick up, awful perks, standard gameplay.

I was very eager to play the Doctor (not anymore, I find him boring), he was my 13th option.
13. Hybrid, Mid Tier, Several powers, medium skill, average mechanics, powerful add-ons, fine without add-ons, medium to pick up, awful perks.

Out of the top tier killers, I thought the Hag would be my top tier, but turns out it's the Spirit on the 7th place. When I get better, I'll definetly check it out.
7. Spirit, Top Tier, Single power, medium skill, average mechanics, powerful add-ons, fine without add-ons, medium to pick up, decent perks, unique gameplay.

Fully explained here by Otzdarva:
8. Bloodweb Level Up Guide
Not all Bloodweb are created equal, there is a way to get the best out of each Bloodweb.

When you're at the first levels, you basically have to complete all of it, but at higher levels, you play with the entity.

There are a few things to consider when investing points in a Bloodweb:
- Always grab the perks first, as the Entity will eat the perks first.
- If there are 2 perks on the bloodweb, you cannot save both, you have to choose one.
- Sometimes you can make the entity eat more nods at a time, if she blocks your path towards other nods by eating one bridge nod. You can use this to skip bloodwebs you already got the perk from.
- If you only want to level up faster and unlock perks: consider buying offerings that give bonus Bloodpoints in game, as its an investment with return.
9. Best Items and Offerings
For the record, I'm not going to touch the add-ons as there are too many and haven't got to learn them yet.

There are 5 survivor items, generally speaking:
Toolbox - repair generator faster and can sabotage hooks.
Med-Kit - can heal others faster and can heal yourself.
Flashlight - can blind the killer to stun him or make him drop players.
Key - can open the hatch manually for 10 seconds (except broken key)
Map - you can see generators on the map and keep track of them.
The broken key is a funny item because it's useless without add-ons. And I mean really useless, literally it does nothing.

People debate which item is the best out of: Toolbox, Med-Kit and Flashight. But they all agree that the key is bad and the map is the worst.
