How to install mods on Linux

How to install mods using unity mod manager

Overview

If you have Steam installed and working there are no other requirements.

Instructions will use the terminal as this works the same across all distributions. If you find it easier to perform some steps using a file manager then please do so.

Download Unity Mod Manager

Download the zip file from the Nexus Mods website

Navigate to the zip file and extract

Open a terminal and navigate to where you downloaded UnityModManager. For me this is my Downloads folder.

cd Downloads

Extract the zip using the unzip command. You will need to match the version number to the file you have downloaded.

unzip UnityModManager-21-0-24-0b-1635663020.zip

Set Derail Valley launch options

Right click Derail Valley in your Steam library. Choose properties.

In the General tab, change the launch options to match this -

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%

If you are using additional software such as gamemode or mangohud, you can still include that before %command%

You can now launch the game and check that Unity Mod Manager opens.

Run Unity Mod Manager

In the Steam client, open the Game menu, then choose "Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library".


Choose BROWSE... Navigate to the extracted folder. Change "File Type" to "All Files". Select UnityModManager.exe. Select Open.


Make sure UnityModManager.exe is selected, then choose "Add Selected Programs"


Right click UnityModManager.exe in your library, open properties. Go to the compatibility tab and force the program to run with Proton. Choose the latest version you have installed.


You can now launch UnityModManager.

Install Mods

In UnityModManager choose "Derail Valley" from the game drop down. Then select folder. Browse to the Z drive (mapped to the root of your linux system), then select the Derail Valley install folder.


Choose "DoorstopProxy" as the Installation Method and press "Install". You should see "Installation was successful."


Mods can be installed by dragging zip files into the lower part of the mods page.



If you are unable to drag in files then you can manually install mods be unzipping archives into the newly created "mods" directory in your Derail Valley install location.

For example extracting the Heads Up Display mod.

unzip HeadsUpDisplay.zip-206-0-6-0-1625709385.zip -d "/home/jake/data/steam/steamapps/common/Derail Valley/Mods"

Installed Mods will appear in the mod manager.

Hmm. I am getting two errors, one a No Network Access error and two an Access Denied error. Anyone fixed these in Mint? Thanks. :D

For others seeing this, installing w/ Assembly instead of DoorstopProxy made it work for me!

Amazing guide follwed it and got it all to work as explained here but unfortunately the mods don't work in game and haven't been able to figure that out...

I'd rate you 5 stars, but Steam won't let me because I don't own Derail Valley. Your guide helped me install mods on another game though.

One note: For my game (Pathfinder:Kingmaker) I needed to install via Assembly in order for it to work, as suggested in the link below (leaving this here for others).
