How to Build a Floating Island Without Code
By Sadanatha
Did you know that a floating island must not be a circle? And you can do it yourself. This guide will teach you how to build simple circle shaped and irregularly shaped floating islands without inserting code.

How to Build a Simple Floating Island
Let us first start with simple circle shaped island. I will explain it step by step.

Step 1. First what you need is to find circle on the mesh. Like this one:

.
Visible part of the mesh may not contain such figure. Then you can simply drag empty mesh by clicking on the right mouse button. until you will not find desirable figure.

But initial mesh is too small and it may take too much time. So I prefer another way. I start put single elements near the visible zone borders until the mesh reaches its maximum size. If the circle still does not appear I begin to remove the elements from one side of the mesh and put them to the other thereby moving the grid. It’s much quicker than to drag small part.

.
Step 2. Build the round base on the sea level.

.
NOTE: Remember that you do not need to build the solid line on the sea level. You may simply mark the figure by single blocks.
.
Step 3. Build a single tower and create a ring connected to its top point. The higher will be tower the higher will float the island.

.
Step 4. Disconnect ring from the tower (demolish the block under the ring) and fill it. The floating round island is ready.

NOTE:
  • The base of the island can be done from blocks of different colors.
  • The island can be oval.
  • There can be several islands, one above the other.
  • There also can be several rings, one inside the other.

Secret of Irregularly Shaped Floating Island
The main secret of building irregularly shaped floating island is very easy: their borders must have no sharp corners.

Look at the picture:

.
When you remove bricks inside the plain wall you create an arck. But if the line of the wall contains the sharp angle then the game automatically puts the rack. And this rack can not be removed when you build floating isaland. That's why you should avoid sharp angles.

But how this may be reached?

As you know in Townscaper all mesh cells has 4 sides. But basic elements (I call them "blocks") may have 4 forms:
  • with 3 sides
  • with 4 sides
  • five-pointed star
  • six-pointed star

.
Blocks seat not in the cells but at the intersection of lines. And these lines show you where the wall will go. When you start building island you first "paint" their borders by line of the blocks. To avoid sharp angles this line first of all should not contain 5-pointed and 6-pointed stars. They will definitely create sharp corners.

.
Line contained from 4-side blocks never has sharp angles.

.
Blocks with 3 sides have not definite behaviour. Sometimes they create sharp angles sometimes not.

.

Checking this simple rule you may discover very interesting things.

For example... In many manuals I saw the note that only circle may be used for floating island. But in reality of Townscaper sometimes the line wich looks like circle may not be good base for floating island.

.
At the same time the crossroads do not make a problems.

.
Even crossroads based on 5- and 6-pointed stars!

How to Build an Irregularly Shaped Floating Island
Now when we know this secret of Townscaper we can build the irregularly shaped islan.

Step 1. Look at the mesh and find curved line wich do not cross 5-star and 6-pointed stars. Start placing blocks some distance apart to mark this line. Continue until the line is closed. Remember that you do not need to build the solid line on the sea level.

Pay attention to the blocks with 3 sides. They allow you to change the direction.

.
If you want you can add ponytails from small islands connected to the main island:

.
To check a questionable area build a wall on it and create an arch. If no supports appear under it then everything is OK.

.
Pay attention only to the outer side of the future island. Sharp corners inside are not important. If the support appears on the corner wich looks inside the island, filling the area will settle the problem. For example this rack appeared when I created the gate.

.
But when I made the wall wider it disappered.

.
It may happens that at the end you come to the sharp corner. Do not hurry up to demolish everything. First check the closest crossroads.

.
Sometimes the island simply becomes bigger.

.

Step 2. When line on the sea level is ready build a single tower and create the line of your floating island borders connected to its top point. If the line is too difficult, then you can build several towers in order not to make mistakes at the crossroads.

.
Don't worry if supports appear here and there when you create the border. Once you fill the base of the island, they will disappear

.

Step 3. Disconnect created border from the tower and fill it. Do not forget that you may fill only part of the border. The main thing is to have no sharp corners.
The irregularly shaped floating island is ready.
