Introduction
This guide contains some notes I collected while playing through DUNGEON ENCOUNTERS. It's likely I've missed some things, and may have typo'd here and there, but I figured I'd try to organize this information in case it is useful to anyone.

Most of this guide will simply be data; there are many gameplay elements I haven't tried, but I'll start with a short explanation of how I went through the game.

I've tried to hide some stuff with spoiler tags/give progressive hints for some of the riddles, etc. I'm not sure if I'll update this, but if you have missing information, want things organized differently, or think something should be hidden as a spoiler, feel free to leave a comment and I might update it accordingly if I get the opportunity.
Gameplay Notes
General Tips
  • The Field Scouting skill is found very early on and you want to keep it equipped for the entire game. This skill shows battle tiles on the map which allows you to approach battles more carefully.
  • Dungeon Encounters uses a hexadecimal numbering system for map tiles (from 00 to FF). For battle tiles, this number correlates with the difficulty of the battle, so if you see something strangely high/out of place, it is best to avoid it. (I went further and always avoided battles for which I didn't have the fiend data already).
  • Going up and down stairs will reset enemy spawns, so if you're trying to avoid fighting, this can be very helpful.
  • AP bonuses are gained when uncovering progressively higher numbers of tiles, as well as for fully mapping floors.
  • There are only a handful of different types of shops; if you find another further in the dungeon with the same name, they all actually share their stock, so a shop deeper down is in no way superior to those before. Stock can be increased by defeating enemies: if you look in the Battle Log, it will show which items may be added to shops when defeating that enemy type.
  • Attacking with an unarmed slot will cause 1HP's worth of damage to an enemy, which can be very useful on occasion if you're going up against enemies that have high physical or magical defense, but only 1HP.
Party Selection
I began the game with a party consisting of Nanga Pahr, Sesspire, Elva, and Rwenzo, but there's no deep reason; Rwenzo started with a nice accessory that boosted his damage, and otherwise I simply tried to choose among a decent selection of level/speed. I never actually changed out my main party and only ended up using other characters when fetching the corpses of these guys if I got wiped out.

There doesn't seem to be a huge difference between starting characters. Most can all equip the entire set of standard weapons/armor/accessories, although there does seem to be a different starting Speed stat. HP/PP growth rates seem to vary per character as well, but I'm not sure that's necessarily a dealbreaker. Three sets of character descriptions, notably Rwenzo/Ntleyana, Gracia/Valtoro, and Jufren/Jorath refer to one another; I'm not certain if something special occurs if you pair these characters or if it is simply flavor text.

Besides those that are at the Academy at the beginning of the game, you're able to find more in the dungeon and bring them into your party. These characters, marked "Wandering" in the Composition menu, are typically found on or within a few floors of their listed level. Some of these can use exclusive and rare equipment with special abilities; I haven't used these myself, but I'll note these further along where I'm aware of them.
Dungeon Layout
The dungeon consists of 100 levels numbered 00 to 99; there is a two-way teleport between each floor ending in a "9" (generally) back to floor 00 which lets you return and refresh your party/visit shops more easily, make it easier to recover your team in case they get wiped out, etc. Every group of 10 floors has a different name/"theme", which changes the layout of the floors, giving some of these areas a rather different feel.
Status Effects
All status effects have a passive immunity Ability available, typically right around the time enemies may begin using them, although often before this point as well.
  • Poison: Given how early immunity is available, I'm not actually sure how this functions in the game. It can be cured at Purification Springs (Event Tile 07)
  • Stonebind/Petrify: Again, with immunity available I've only seen this effect on some wanderers. Petrified characters cannot move with the party and must be cured from a Gorgon Altar (Event Tile 08) within the dungeon before the character can be collected again. The Altar takes the coordinates of the petrified character.
  • Instant Death: What it says on the tin.
  • Consumption: A character gets consumed by an enemy; must defeat the enemy to collect them and add them to the party again.
  • Banished: I honestly have no idea what this is.
  • Weary: I also do not know what this is, but the state is mentioned in the description for the Desperate Strength ability. Assumption is this is very low HP/when HP is red.
  • Broken Weapons: Not a status effect per se, but some enemies have attacks that may destroy your equipment; this cannot be reversed, but there is an immunity.
  • Cavy: You get turned into a... hamster thing. If I recall, it makes the character slower and far more likely to miss. There is a "Cavy Sword" item, but I'm not clear as to its effect. Can only be cured at the (single available) Cavy Idol.
  • Reflect: A positive effect you can apply with an Ability that reflect one instance of Magic damage.
Special Tile Types
  • Event Tile: White numbers, generally positive stuff noted in your Event Log
  • Battle Tile: Black numbers, enemies noted in your Battle Log (if you found the corresponding Fiend data)
  • Hidden Tile: Not initially shown; smaller box when found
  • Pitfall: Black hole on a normal tile that randomly spawns (and can move by reloading the floor). Drops your party down a level or scatters them if no lower tile is available
  • Toll Tile: A black "X" on a normal tile that charges money when you walk on it
Equipment Notes
I basically avoided all "random" damage equipment up until around the end of the game, which is just a personal preference.

For about the first half or so of the game, I tended to try to have everyone with the strongest Hat (not helmet) and Armor (not coat); this seemed to me to be a decent balance between speed boosts and defense. For accessories, I used minerals to further boost damage.

Offensively, I tried to balance damage something like this:
  • Nanga Pahr: Bow, Maliare
  • Sesspire: Bow, Malio
  • Elva: Spear, Maliare
  • Rwenzo: Spear, Maliare

After getting Ranged Focus, making "Flying" irrelevant, the "Bow" became whatever strongest fixed-damage single-target weapons I had available.

Once some riddle goodies were found, I moved the magic around, giving Nanga Pahr and Sesspire Maliare, while Elva got Malaflux 17 and Rwenzo got Malio 17. I ended up filling in the whole map before going for the end of the game (leaving only to defeat battles FA through FF), so I'll leave my setups just after completing the map, and my final setup for the last battles. Playstyle for about the last quarter of the dungeon involved keeping the Dominant Strength ability active as much as possible.

Final Exploration Equipment
Nanga Pahr:
  • Gastrophetes (Single, Fixed, 80,000 dmg)
  • Maliare 8 (Multiple, Fixed, 12,000 dmg)
  • Maximillian Helm (5 Speed, 65,300 m.def)
  • Grand Armor (38,000 p.def)
  • Calcite (6,500 dmg)
Sesspire:
  • Tournesol (Single, Fixed, 100,000 dmg)
  • Maliare 9 (Multiple, Fixed, 45,000 dmg)
  • Circlet (8 Speed, 20,000 m.def)
  • Grand Armor (38,000 p.def)
  • Calcite (6,500 dmg)
Elva:
  • Mungsten Gun (Multiple, Random, 85,500 dmg)
  • Malaflux 17 (Single, Random, 180,000 dmg)
  • Maximilian Helm (5 Speed, 65,300 m.def)
  • Maximilian Armor (5 speed, 65,400 p.def)
  • Calcite (6,500 dmg)
Rwenzo:
  • Mungsten Gun (Multiple, Random, 85,500 dmg)
  • Malio 17 (Single, Fixed, 100,000 dmg)
  • Crown of Laurels (9 Speed, 40,000 m.def)
  • Grand Armor (38,000 p.def)
  • Calcite (6,500 dmg)

Final Equipment:
At this point I went shopping for additional good equipment, used several Mystery Compounds where necessary to shore up PP for the equipment, and swapped over to Speed-based accessories since the damage difference didn't seem as important given the new weapons.

Honestly at this point I was probably a bit over-prepared, having gained tons of levels in floors 80~89 alone. Characters were around level 140, and I had just shy of 8,000,000 gold before shopping. This was likely very much overkill. Also, the magic damage at this point was entirely unnecessary.
Nanga Pahr (113 speed, 40,000 p.def, 65,300 m.def, 334 PP):
  • Address Blade (Single, Fixed)
  • Gastrophetes (Single, Fixed, 3 speed, 80,000 dmg)
  • Maximilian Helm (5 speed, 65,300 m.def)
  • Lordly Robes (10 speed, 40,000 p.def)
  • Tabi (25 speed)
Sesspire (115 speed, 40,000 p.def, 65,300 m.def, 300 PP):
  • Tournesol (Single, Fixed, 100,000 dmg)
  • Malaflux 17 (Single, Random, 180,000 dmg)
  • Maximilian Helm (5 speed, 65,300 m.def)
  • Lordly Robes (10 speed, 40,000 p.def)
  • Ascent Boots (30 speed)
Elva (111 speed, 65,400 p.def, 65,300 p.def, 479 PP):
  • Javelin (Multiple, Fixed, 375,000 dmg)
  • Malio 17 (Single, Fixed, 100,000 dmg)
  • Maximilian Helm (5 speed, 65,300 m.def)
  • Maximilian Armor (5 speed, 65,400 p.def)
  • Ascent Boots (30 speed)
Rwenzo (133 speed, 65,400 p,def, 40,000 m.def, 324 PP):
  • Rusted Hatchet (Single, Random, 180,000 dmg)
  • Malaflux 17 (Single, Random, 180,000 dmg)
  • Crown of Laurels (9 speed, 40,000 m.def)
  • Maximilian Armor (5 speed, 65,400 p.def)
  • Prominence Boots (50 speed)
Dungeon Floors
Note: I did not note down when greatly over- or under-leveled battles appeared within the dungeon since I didn't fight the over-leveled ones and the under-leveled ones weren't of much interest. Thus, the battle listings are certainly incomplete.

Some of the more annoying enemies to watch out for will be noted, specifically:
  • Imp/Death Tarot: Can hit party members whose level is a prime number very hard
  • Cockatrice/Basilisk: Can Petrify if you do not have immunity
  • Melusine: Can inflict the Cavy status if you do not have immunity

90-99: The Rift Beyond
Each floor on this section is relatively unique. Most do not have standard up/down staircases and will need to be accessed using abilities or teleporters. Floors below will have further information.

Floor 92
Floors 92 and 93 have several joining staircases that are connected to one another on floor 93. This floor has many disjointed "islands". In order to complete fill the map, you will need to use some combination of Gambler's Shift and trying to estimate using coordinates and using Teleport. Tip: You may want to have only one character when guessing Teleport coordinates--that way if you fail, characters won't get randomly scattered throughout the dungeon.

Note: This should leave one more island; I had one more set of coordinates, 38.87, which is incorrect/seems to be a typo--if you use that address with more than one party member, they will be scattered. Hopefully I'll be able to correct this at some stage.
