Preliminary Steps
Do these common steps to get started, no matter which map you use.
1) Start up Battlezone: Combat Commander.
2) Change mod to VSR (if you don’t have it, you can obtain it from the BZ2 Workshops in Steam).
3) Go to Multiplayer
4) Choose Create Game
5) Choose the desired map.
6) Go to Host Options, Page 1, and click the MPI Mode button at the bottom. That will change the FFA map to an MPI one.
The next sections will show you how to customize the options for each multiteam map, as well as any game configuration suggestions.
FFA: Ground Four
On Page 1, change the mode to MPI mode. That will change the FFA map to an MPI one.

Also on Page 1, Set CPU 1 Team to any race you want. This team is actually disabled for this map.

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates.

In summary, here's the four slots and where you start on the map. As you will see, some of the first slots are disabled for this map:

1: Your Team (SE corner of the map)
2: CPU Team 1 [disabled]
3: CPU Team 2 [disabled]
4: CPU Team 3 (SW corner)
5: CPU Team 4 (NW corner)
6: CPU Team 5 (NE corner)

On Page 2, set all your options to your liking.

On Page 3, set your races for the 3 CPU teams.

CPU 3: The team starting in the SW corner.
CPU 4: The team starting in the NW corner.
CPU 5: The team starting in the NE corner.

Set all the other slots to NONE.

On Page 4, set your alliances

1: Human Team 1 (i.e., your team)
2: [disabled, doesn't matter]
3: [disabled, doesn't matter]
4: CPU Team #3
5: CPU Team #4
6: CPU Team #5

Further tips:
-------------
If you set any slot to the same team number as you, that CPU team is your ally. If not, they are your enemy. If you set the CPU teams on different team numbers than your own, they will be enemies to each other. So essentially it's like a FFA among all of you. Conversely, if you set all the CPU teams to Team 2 (and you staying on Team 1) it will be ALL the CPU teams vs you. Good luck!

Config Suggestion 1: 2 vs 2; Difficulty - Intermediate
------------------------------------------------------
This puts you and an ISDF team vs hadeans and scions (which are united).

FFA: River4
On Page 1, change the mode to MPI mode. That will change the FFA map to an MPI one.

Also on Page 1, Set CPU 1 Team to any race. This team is disabled for this map.

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates.

In summary, here's the four slots and where you start on the map:

6: CPU Team #5
(the other slots are disabled, so their settings don't matter)

Further tips:
-------------
If you set any slot to the same team number as you, that CPU team is your ally. If not, they are your enemy. Config Suggestion 1: 2 vs 2; Difficulty - Advanced
--------------------------------------------------
This will put you and a scion team vs the scions and hadeons (both united). The pairs of teams start diagonal corners to each other, so each side of the river has an enemy team. As the game progresses, try to upgrade your ally's buildings and pools across the river. Expect roughly 1 hr 15 min gameplay.

Config Suggestion 1: 2 vs. 2; Difficulty - Expert
-------------------------------------------------
This puts you and an ISDF team vs the hadeons and scions (which are united). You and your allied team start next to each other. Establish your nearby pools and base as early as possible. Enemy attacks will slowly escalate. During mid-game, be sure to help your ally if they lose nearby pools. Usually if you can clear the pool from an enemy invasion, they will set up a new extractor pretty quickly. Consider upgrading your ally's pools as well. Its vital that you keep this ally alive in the game. Expect a lot of mid-game attacks from maulers, titans, krahanos (spelling?), atlases and hedoux. You'll need at least 3 players to make progress, as when I did so, we won the game in 1 hr 30 min. Good luck!

Config Suggestion 1: 2 vs. 2; Difficulty - Intermediate
---------------------------------------------------
This will put you and your ISDF ally vs a scion and hadean team (they are united). You'll have an empty pit to your left while your ally will be to your right - offering some protection from immediate enemy invasions.

Config Suggestion 2: 2 vs. 3; Difficulty - Advanced (Expert?)
---------------------------------------------------
This will put you (a scion team) and your ISDF ally vs 2 scion teams and a hadean team (they are all united). You'll have an empty pit to your left while your ally will be to your right - offering some protection from immediate enemy invasions. I strongly recommend to help out your ally mid-game by setting up spires at the top of their base pit (top of the entrance ramp) and upgrading their 2 base pools. It is paramount you give them the best possible ability to build a bomber. Expect the enemy teams to push back, especially in the center pool area. You might also need to clear out some guardians and xyr guards to clear the path of the ally bomber to the central north enemy base. For this advanced near-expert game, expect a running time of about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Config Suggestion 1: 2 vs 2; Difficulty - Intermediate
------------------------------------------------------
You and the ISDF face the scions and hadeans (which are united). Each team are at diagonally opposite corners to each other. If you take control of one of the closest center channel pools early, it will make the rest of your game go smoother (even more smoother if you control both center pools near your side of the channel; or split it between you and your ally). Otherwise, you'll only control 1 pool close to your base and expect invasions from both teams that could potentially make this a much harder game.

In summary, here's the three slots and where you start on the map:

1: Your Team (SW corner of the map)
2: CPU Team 1 (NW corner)
3: CPU Team 2 (NE corner)
NOTE: There is no way to have a computer team start at the SE corner of the map. Possible bug and was reported.

Config Suggestion 1: 1 vs 1 vs 1; Difficulty - Beginner
-------------------------------------------------------
This will put you on one end of the map vs the scions and the hadeans on the other side. It's each team for themselves. Expect the scions and hadeans to fight each other frequently since they are both near each other in the north. Once you control pools in the middle and the sides, it should be fairly easy to build up a good army to tackle both enemies within the first 20 minutes.

Config Suggestion 2: 1 vs 1 vs 1; Difficulty - Advanced
-------------------------------------------------------
Like Config 1, this will put you on one end of the map vs the scions and the hadeans on the other side. It's each team for themselves. They will fight more furiously against each other, likely wiping out one of their bases. Get control of the middle pools as they are doing that. You will now have to build forces and defenses there as the remaining enemy will build up theirs. Expect frequent attacks by their major units (for e.g., titans and maulers). If you conquer their pools, expect the enemy to retaliate to regain control. Expect at least a 1-hour battle.

Also on Page 1, Set CPU 1 Team to what race you want. That race will start in the NW open circle of the map. (you will set allyship later)

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit = 30 to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates.

In summary, here's the eleven slots and where you start on the map:

1: Your Team (west central open circle of the map)
2: CPU Team 1 isdf friend(NW open circle of the map)
3: CPU Team 2 (NE open circle of the map)

Conversely, if you set all the CPU teams to Team 2 (and you staying on Team 1) it will be ALL the CPU teams vs you. Good luck!

Config Suggestion 1: 3 vs 3; Difficulty - Intermediate
------------------------------------------------------
This puts you (as a scion team), ISDF team, and Hadeon team (all in the southside pit areas) vs. scion, ISDF, and hadeon teams on the northside. Each side is united. The key is to take control of the pool at the top of your hill early so you can cut it off from the enemy scions on the opposite side. That will give you 3 pools to do your builds as you conquer each army. Otherwise, if you stay in the base with 2 pools, you risk the scion enemy constantly invading your base mid-game and possibly storming it much later. Good luck!

VSR FFA: Ring 8
On Page 1, change the mode to MPI mode. That will change the FFA map to an MPI one.

Also on Page 1, Set CPU 1 Team to what race you want. That race will start in the NE corner of the map. (you will set allyship later)

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit to 30-40 to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates.

In summary, here's the eight slots and where you start on the map (since the map looks like a pizza pie, I'll refer to each segment as "slices" of the pie in the map):

1: Your Team (Upper SW slice)
2: CPU Team 1 (lower NW slice)
3: CPU Team 2 (upper NW slice)
4: CPU Team 3 (upper NE slice)
5: CPU Team 4 (lower NE slice)

CPU 6: The team starting in the lower SE slice.
CPU 7: The team starting in the lower SW slice.

Set the rest of the slots to NONE.

NOTE: There is no way to turn off CPU 1. Therefore, you must have a CPU 1 Team in your game, whether it's an ally or enemy.

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates.

In summary, here's the five slots and where they start on the map:

1: Your Team (north central pit of the map)
2: CPU Team 1 (SW pit of the map)
3: CPU Team 2 (east central pit of the map)

Also on Page 1, Set CPU 1 Team to what race you want. That race will start in the NW corner of the map, across a bridge. (you will set allyship later)

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit of 40 to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates. (Don't follow the recommendation of 0 Unit Limit in the map description. That will remove the unit limit.)

In summary, here's the three slots and where you start on the map:

1: Your Team (SW corner of the map)
2: CPU Team 1 (NW corner of the map)
3: CPU Team 2 (central east side of the map, north of a winding river)
*NOTE 1: CPU Team 1 will also have supporting scion and hadeon towers around their base and along their entrance bridge, regardless of race chosen.
**NOTE 2: CPU Team 2 will also have supporting scion spires and jammers in the rivers and paths leading to their base, regardless of race chosen.

On Page 2, set all your options to your liking.

On Page 3, set your race for CPU team 2.

CPU 2: The team starting in the NE corner.

Set the rest of the slots to NONE.

NOTE: There is no way to turn off CPU 1. Therefore, you must have a CPU 1 Team in your game, whether it's an ally or enemy.

On Page 4, set your alliances

1: Human Team 1 (i.e., your team)
2: CPU Team #1
3: CPU Team #2

Config Suggestion 1: 1 vs 2; Difficulty - Advanced
------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the configuration the mapmaker suggests. This puts your team vs the hadeans and scions. Both those teams are united. Despite the low level settings, expect both teams to attack your base and extractors with 5-6 units at a time during mid-game and give you quite a fight. Expect a long 1.5 - 2.5 hour game, especially with 1-2 players.

Host Option:
-CPU Team: Hadeon

Page 4 Options:

-2 CPU1: Team 2
-3 CPU2: Team 2

Config Suggestion 2: 1 vs 2; Difficulty - Advanced
------------------------------------------------------------------
This puts your team vs the ISDF and scions. Both those teams are united. This is with slightly easier settings than config 1, but still a challenge. Expect similar attack behavior as config 1 and the same amount of time to beat it (2 - 2.5 hours with 2-3 players).

Host Option:
-CPU Team: ISDF

Page 1 Options:
-Unit limit: 45
-Player Scrap Boost: 2
-CPU Scrap Boost: 0

Page 2 Options:
-AIP Difficulty: Boxhead 1

Page 3 Options:

Page 4 Options:
-1 You: Team 1
-2 CPU1: Team 2
-3 CPU2: Team 2

Config Suggestion 3: 2 vs 1; Difficulty - Expert
--------------------------------------------------
This puts your team and the scions vs the ISDF. Even with the enemy outnumbered, it gets quite challenging when they have their strong units as well as a bomber. The scion ally even lost their matriarch in the process! Playing mostly alone, it took me nearly 3 hours to beat.

Host Option:
-CPU Team: ISDF

Page 1 Options:
-Unit limit: 35
-Player Scrap Boost: 0
-CPU Scrap Boost: 0

Page 2 Options:
-AIP Difficulty: Boxhead 2

Page 4 Options:
-1 You: Team 1
-2 CPU1: Team 2
-3 CPU2: Team 1

Config Suggestion 4: 2 vs 1; Difficulty - Expert
--------------------------------------------------
This puts your team and the scions vs the ISDF. The enemy will build their major forces early and even start sending out bomber attacks at around the 7 or 8 min mark. With 3 players, we finished in about 1 hr 15 min.

Host Option:
-CPU Team: ISDF

Page 1 Options:
-Unit limit: 35
-Player Scrap Boost: 3
-CPU Scrap Boost: 0

Page 3 Options:
-CPU 2: Scion

Page 4 Options:
-1 You: Team 1
-2 CPU1: Team 2
-3 CPU2: Team 1

Config Suggestion 5: 2 vs 1; Difficulty - Intermediate
--------------------------------------------------
This puts your team and the ISDF vs the scions. It's longer travel for the scions to come to your base, so the attacks will be small and long in between waves as the ISDF ally will be attacking their travelling groups. By mid-game, you will get more significant invasions, especially for the pool near your base. By then you should have a strong enough base to counter. Attacking their base, though, is somewhat challenging with the winds and turns of the paths. But your base should be pretty stable. Finished in about 1 hr 30 min.

-CPU Team: ISDF

VSR MPI: Meltdown
On Page 1, change the mode to MPI mode. That will change the FFA map to an MPI one.

Also on Page 1, Set CPU 1 Team to what race you want. That race will start in the north central land area of the map. (you will set allyship later)

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates.

In summary, here's the four slots and where you start on the map:

1: Your Team (SE peninsula of the map)
2: CPU Team 1 (top north central area of the map)
3: CPU Team 2 (NW corner of the map, just west of CPU Team 1)
4: CPU Team 3 (NE corner of the map, just east of CPU Team 1)
On Page 2, set all your options to your liking.

On Page 3, set your race for the remaining two CPU teams.

CPU 2: The team starting in the NW corner of the map.
CPU 3: The team starting in the NE corner of the map.

Set the rest of the slots to NONE.

NOTE: There is no way to turn off CPU 1. Therefore, you must have a CPU 1 Team in your game, whether it's an ally or enemy.

On Page 4, set your alliances

1: Human Team 1 (i.e., your team)
2: CPU Team #1
3: CPU Team #2
4: CPU Team #3

Further tips:
-------------
If you set any slot to the same team number as you, that CPU team is your ally. If not, they are your enemy. If you set the CPU teams on different team numbers than your own, they will be enemies to each other. So essentially it's like a FFA among all of you. Conversely, if you set all the CPU teams to Team 2 (and you staying on Team 1) it will be ALL the CPU teams vs you. Good luck!

Config Suggestion 1: 2 vs. 2; Difficulty - Intermediate
--------------------------------------------------------------
This will put you and a scion team vs an ISDF team and hadean team (both united). You should be able to have at least 2 pools if you set them up early. Most attacks are by minor and medium-grade units. Scions will do their best to keep both their neighbors from destroying their base. Expect just over an hour of play.

Host Option:
-CPU Team: Scion

Config Suggestion 2: 1 vs. 1 vs. 1 vs. 1; Difficulty - Expert
--------------------------------------------------------------
This will put you vs 2 scion teams and a hadean team - every team for themselves. Early game attacks won't be too frequent as the enemy teams are near each other and attack each other frequently. But eventually, their bigger units will invade. You should be able to establish the closest 3 pools to your base without too much trouble. But you will need to set up some defenses to deal with routine attacks mid-game. Find gaps between attacks to have your army launch an offensive. Work on one base at a time. Finally, I wouldn't bother establishing extractors on pools in the meteor shower area. Eventually, any extractor set up there will be destroyed. With 2 other players not joined at the same time, we were able to beat it as scion in 3:30 hours!

VSR MPI: Stranded
On Page 1, change the mode to MPI mode. That will change the FFA map to an MPI one.

Also on Page 1, Set CPU 1 Team to what race you want. That team will start in the NW corner of the map. (you will set allyship later)

Set all the other Page 1 options to your liking. I strongly recommend that you set a unit limit to avoid all the CPU teams overproducing and dropping your framerate and introducing lag to you and your teammates.

In summary, here's the five slots and where you start on the map:

1: Your Team (center of map, from there, you can access all corners of the map)
2: CPU Team 1 (NW corner, across a bridge)
3: CPU Team 2 (SE corner, along mountains and a beach)
4: CPU Team 3 (SW corner, protected with mountains)
5: CPU Team 4 (NE corner, protected with mountains)
*NOTE: At the game start, this CPU 1 Team will also have many supporting spires and hadeon defenders all around the corners of the map, regardless of what race you choose. Therefore having this team as your ally gives you a big advantage, and conversely as an enemy... a big disadvantage.

On Page 2, set all your options to your liking.

On Page 3, set your races for the remaining 3 CPU teams.

CPU 2: The team starting in the SE corner
CPU 3: The team starting SW corner
CPU 4: The team starting NE corner

Set the rest of the slots to NONE.

NOTE: There is no way to turn off CPU 1. Therefore, you must have a CPU 1 Team in your game, whether it's an ally or enemy.

Config Suggestion 1: 2 vs 3; Difficulty - Advanced
--------------------------------------------------
You as a scion team are allied with the ISDF. You face a scion and 2 hadeon teams (all united). The ally's towers will temporarily keep the enemies from attacking your base for the first 30 min or so, but then get ready to face constant attacks afterwards. As you take out enemy bases, the ISDF will support you better with stronger unit attacks including with the bomber, rocket tanks, and assault tanks. Expect a 1.5 hour game.

It should be fixed. M apologies on the delayed response.
ocfernan  [author] Jan 9, 2023 @ 7:25pm
thanks for the tips. i don't often get other players joining. also - haven't played multi vsr in a year and when i last played, and update broke stranded and meltdown for some reason and didn't get any enemy teams. hopefully that's fixed by now.

Nice guide! If you're truely up for the challenge both Stranded and Meltdown are supposed to be played at ia level 4, 2 scrap cheat, 4 other players, and all of the ai against you :)
meltdown is supposed to be hadean/scion/isdf vs your team and stranded is supposed to be hadean/scion vs your team. But that assumes you have 5 people that really know what they're doing :)
