Prologue - Shadows Edit Twice - Hollywood Edition

Blackmagic's Da Vinci Resolve[www.blackmagicdesign.com]

Now this baby, this "Soulsborne software", is one of the video editing software that Hollywood uses. It's a beast, even for those that are downloading the free version, which will give you a ton of bells and whistles, just to make videos. But like Blender, there's a huge learning curve concerning it.

Here's a tiny list of movies that uses DVR:
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
  • Deadpool 2
  • Overboard
  • Solo: A Star Wars Story
  • On Chesil Beach
  • RBG
  • And many more.

Now before you go all Leroy Jenkins on it and download DVR on the official Blackmagic site, you have to know just how powerful or weak your computer is, like GPUs and CPUs. Also, it's not exactly, optimize with Mac or Linux properly, but one can try and experiment with it. I heard that it's mixed results, works for some, doesn't work for others.

This is a rather tiny vid that I made from Da Vinci Resolve.

Don't Forget To

Note: Some of these tips are probably a bit outdated, since DaVinci Resolve 17 probably patched some of the whatever issues that I may have.
First Things First

Before doing and learning all that cool stuff, one has to learn how to back up projects, just in case Da Vinci crashes or you are careless, like excitedly jumping over to the newer DVR version, only to realize that you forgotten about your projects (These things can happen). Because if ya don't you will lose, hours, days, or worst, months of blood, sweat, and tears.

How To Save Projects

Tiny Tips
Darla: You don't have to be good, but you better be..."

It's cheaper than Adobe's Premiere Pro, because PP has a paid subscription (along with the other Periodic Table Of Adobe Software) which is bad news for broke starving artists/content creators with big dreams. With DaVinci Resolve, you're getting the same stuff as PP or better for mostly free. Also, if you buy DaVinci Resolve, you buy it and own it forever.

One can roll back to the previous version of DVR or download the old version (But I didn't find out how to do that when I was using it).

Don't mix up your video files when editing, like mixing Quicktime with MP4s. Otherwise, the DVA will act glitchy.

There's certain video files that DVR is allergic to, but what's strange is that you can make and render a vid.

While, you're making vids with DaVinci Resolve 17. Blackmagic Design is busy making DVR18, which the beta testing will take a few years, like a year or two.

Set DaVinci Resolve in a certain way, so it can autosave your projects in case if the software crashes.

The DVR17 comes with Fairlight after downloading, it handles mainly sound, mixing, sound cleanup and audio recording. Just to name a few.

The free version gives quite a lot, even though some of the effects, text, and a few features are block via paywall. Unless, you buy the DaVnci Resolve Studio (which is $295 USD). If you so wish.

Concerning Activation Keys

There's two types of activating keys, one is a dongle and the other is a digital version, both are different ways of owning DVR.

Both

The two keys don't require internet access for all the activating and deactiving purposes. This is perfect for offline work.

They're about the same price.

You can't go wrong with either of them, just get the one that's fits your groove and workspace activities.

Has the ability to "upgrade" seamlessly to the next DVR version(?) (Ya have to research on this, because I only used the free DVR versions).

Dongle

This baby is not just compatible with Davinci Resolve, but with Fusion Studios. It also makes installing in different computers very easy and "portable". Be aware that one must be careful with it, since the dongle is "sensitive", it's easy to misplace or worst, break it. Buy a protective box for travel purposes.

Activation Key

Unlike the physical dongle, one doesn't need to take this particular key with them. Because, once installed, it's ready to go. Just take a picture of the code and stash the main one somewhere safe.

Be aware that I don't use DaVinci Resolve anymore, due to the latest updates (DaVinci Resolve 17), being too strong for my toaster, I switch to Blender now. This guide is based on my memories of using it and I know a bit, since I used DVR 14(?) and up to DVR 16. But don't ask me about Fusion, Fairlight, and that separate sound editor software that came with DVR16, I haven't learn to use them when I was using DVR (I only use Fusion for removing green screens).

I need help with grammar, spelling, and updating.
