Since the remastered version of Quake came out, I've been testing a few single player mission packs from start to finish and wrote down any issues I had with them so you don't have to. You're welcome.

About this guide
So you wanted to try a mod without having to check if it is compatible with the Quake Remastered version (or QuakeKEX, for short)? Well, today it's your lucky day because I fully tested plenty of them from start to finish and noted any compatibilty / performance issues I found on them.

Cool, but, where I can download them?

Most of them were downloaded from Quaddicted, the best Quake map database you can find on the net. I would link all the mods listed here, but the infamous Steam spamfilter would probably delete them all.

If any of these mods marked as 🟨 or 🟥 is fixed, feel free to comment and I will update the guide.



Color guide:

⭐ Download Star mods via Add-ons menu in Quake for free.
🟩 Green mods are fully playable.
🟨 Yellow mods are mostly playable, expect bugs / performance issues.
🟥 Red mods have serious issues or don't work at all. Check for alternative sourceports like QuakeSpasm or DarkPlaces.

Here some mods that worked when I was testing Ironwail



Mods that doesn't even load:
- The Immortal Lock - only works with sourceports



Mods with some problems:
- Bonkjam - high load times, but besides that, it works fine
- Euclids Nigthmare - worked fine until it crashed on episode 3 level 1
- Liminal Spaces Jam - some items aren't visible on some levels

x-men ravages of the apocalypse isn't on here but it mostly works. sometimes sounds play and sometimes they dont (i have music downloaded separately for it). the broken part is when some enemies shoot you with special attacks, it will discolor the screen permanently until you do a full restart of the game.

I played some Alkaline 1.2 on Quake Remastered and it worked fine, but I was wondering why none of the levels had any music. Then I found out the mod apparently has its own soundtrack, but none of it is played on Remastered. Is there any way to enable the new songs with Remastered?

qbj (Quake Brutalist Jam) and qbj2 (Quake Brutalist Jam 2) work*.

qbj works as is. For qbj2 there are some extra escaped quotes (\") in the mabdb.json file in two of the authors names which crashes the parser when loading the mod. Removing them the mod loads fine. I haven't tried all the maps, but the start map for qbj2 has some texture bugs in the remaster (some doors and a switch don't have textures when loaded in the remaster).
