Full bestiary guide with proper in depth information on exact encounter locations, stealable items, rare drops and battle strategies.

Introduction

This guide will provide exact order of encounters so you never miss or skip past enemies.

Great for a first time play through of the game.

It will also include weaknesses of enemies and grind spots for notable items in the game.

If you want to take away a lot of the grind feel free to download Fling's FFIV trainer from the provided drop box link.

It has a 100% drop rate option which forces every monster slain to drop an item. (Results Vary)

Enemies don't always drop their rarest item but it increases the odds exponentially for rare items by about 20% as opposed to 0.50%.

020 Baron Soldier [BOSS]

• Encountered by entering Kaipo for the very first time.
  
• Will only attack on 021 Generals command.
  
• Destroy 2 of them to minimize damage dealt then attack 021 General.
  
• Once all 3 soldiers are defeated the General will flee and you will win the fight.

021 General [BOSS]

• Encountered by entering Kaipo for the very first time.
  
• Commands 020 Baron Soldier to attack on his turn, will never attack you directly.
  
• Make sure to kill him before all three 020 Baron Soldiers are defeated.
  
• Even after his defeat you still need to dispatch all three 020 Baron Soldiers to win.

027 Bomb





029 Gray Bomb

• You can actually encounter 027 Bomb & 029 Gray Bomb extra early at this point.
  
• Be warned they will end you fast if you only have Cecil and Rydia in your group. Get Tellah!
  
• Walk on the two tiles located in the screenshot near the mountains / edge of the water.
  
• You'll encounter a grouping of 2 Bombs and 2 Gray Bombs.
  
• 027 Bomb & 029 Gray Bomb WILL NEVER and DO NOT DROP RYDIA'S BOMB SUMMON!
  
• Otherwise part of a scripted Boss fight on top of Mt. Hobs.

Underground Waterway & Subterranean Lake

010 Red Mousse

014 Toadgre

• Found most frequently in the North Entrance area on the staircase leading outside.
  
• Usually accompanied by 011 Gigantoad.
  
• Weak against Ice Spells.

016 Killer Fish

• Found just about anywhere in both these areas, but more frequently in water.
  
• Found in the Old Waterway under Baron much later on in the game.
  
• Weak against Lightning Spells.

017 Tiny Mage

• Found on land most frequently on B2 or the North Entrance Area.
  
• Also found in the Northern area of Damcyan Desert.
  
• Found in various locations on the Mysidian continent.
  
• Do not use magic against them or they counter with Thunder.
  
• If attacked physically and not killed they will cast Hold.
  
• Drops Silver Armlets which can't be purchased until you enter Mysidia.

018 Water Bug

• Found more frequently in water and on B2 and North Entrance areas.
  
• Will cure itself fully with Curaja if attacked and not killed instantly.
  
• Will flee the fight if attacked enough and not killed.
  
• Weak against Lightning Spells.
  
• Attack them with single target Lightning Spells to kill them instantly.

015 Sahagin

• Found most frequently in the Subterranean Lake area where Octomammoth is.
  
• Fought during a scripted event in Fabul Castle so if you miss it here, don't sweat it.
  
• Weak against Lightning Spells.

019 Alligator

• Found more frequently in the Subterranean Lake than in the Underground Waterway.
  
• Found more frequently in water.
  
• Weak against Ice Spells.
  
• Drops Silver Apples.

158 Octomammoth [BOSS]

• Boss of the Subterranean Lake.
  
• Weak against Lightning Spells.
  
• Weak against darkness attacks, such as Cecil's Dark Knight blades.

160 Mom Bomb [BOSS]

You'll also earn entries 027 Bomb and 029 Gray Bomb after this fight.

• Boss of Mt. Hobs.
  
• When enough damage is dealt will explode in to three 027 Bombs and 029 Gray Bombs.
  
• This is your first legit encounter with 027 Bomb and 029 Gray Bomb so kill one of each.
  
• Bomb enemies will self destruct causing massive damage if not killed quickly.
  
• Use Yang's Focus to deal a significant amount of damage every turn.
  
• Cast the Chocobo Summon with Rydia to maximize her damage.
  
• Heal or Sing with Edward, make sure Rosa keeps everyone healthy and attack with Cecil.

034 Gatlinger

• Found along the path / forest area leading to Fabul Castle after the descent from Mt. Hobs.
  
• Found more frequently in the Mysidia area and surrounding area near Mt. Ordeals.
  
• Counters when hit physically.
  
• Usually accompanied by 004 Sword Rat.

035 Baron Warrior

• ONLY found during the scripted event at Fabul Castle.
  
• Same rules apply as the fight in Kaipo, defeat 2 of them then go after the 036 Captain.

036 Captain

• ONLY found during the scripted event at Fabul Castle.
  
• Defeat two 035 Baron Warriors then defeat the 036 Captain before he flees the fight.
  
• You have two opportunities during the scripted fight at Fabul to kill this mob so make it count.

Mysidia Area & Mt. Ordeals

177 Scarmiglione & 042 Skullnat [BOSS]

• Boss of Mt. Ordeals and one of the four elemental fiends. [Earth]
  
• 042 Skullnat are exclusive zombies only fought in this boss battle.
  
• 042 Skullnats are weak against Fire and Curative Spells.
  
• 177 Scarmiglione frequently casts lightning so make sure to target him with Cecil.
  
• Have the twins Palom & Porom use "Twincast" exclusively to dispatch the 042 Skullnats quickly.
  
• Have Tellah keep everyone alive and healthy by spamming curative spells.
  
• After this fight, reverse party row formations, heal and save at the local save point.

178 Scarmiglione (Undead Abomination) [BOSS]

• Boss of Mt. Ordeals and the true undead form of 177 Scarmiglione.
  
• Frequently poisons party members on physical attacks.
  
• Reverse party formation before the battle begins to prepare for a back attack.
  
• Weak against Fire and Curative Magic.
  
• Use Twincast with Palom and Porom, keep everyone alive with Tellah and attack with Cecil.

Dark Knight Cecil Fight / Class Change Into Paladin

Your mirror image is not part of the bestiary but seeing as this is a mini boss guide the solution to winning this fight is to just not attack at all.

Keep casting Cure on yourself or using High Potions to sustain your mirror images Darkness attacks, after 4 or 5 rounds you will automatically win this fight and Cecil will now become a Paladin.

As a Paladin your HP pool, defense and attack power will increase significantly. Your weapon will be strong against all undead creatures and will usually dispatch them in a single attack.

This is a great grinding spot if you decide to kill off Palom, Porom and Tellah and farm as solo Cecil on top of Mt. Ordeals summit.

There's a save point nearby so you can feel safer about fighting solo.

Old Waterway & Baron Castle

049 Flood Worm

• Found more frequently on land and on B1.

• Drops both Remedies and Silver Apples.

161 Baigan [BOSS]
162 Right Arm [BOSS]
163 Left Arm [BOSS]

• Ward of Baron Castle and Cagnazzo.
  
• Fought after you exit the Old Waterway and enter Baron's main entrance hall.
  
• Casts reflect on all three parts almost immediately, do not use magic spells against this boss.
  
• Cast Haste on Cecil and Yang and have them physically attack Baigan.
  
• Do not bother killing off the arms as they will just regenerate if Baigan is left alive.
  
• Both arms will self destruct after Baigans body is destroyed so try to kill them quickly.
  
• Heal and Buff the party with the Twins and Tellah to keep everyone alive.

179 Cagnazzo

• Boss of Baron Castle and one of the four elemental fiends. [Water]
  
• Fought upon entering the throne room after killing Baigan.
  
• Weak against Lightning Spells.
  
• Casts a water wall which will eventually cast an AOE water torrent, use Thundaga to nullify it.
  
• Use Twincast with the Twins and have Tellah cast Thundaga every round.
  
• Have Cecil attack and Yang Focus to deal double damage every round.
  
• If you have time, cast Haste with Porom on Yang & Cecil and cast Shell on the entire party.
  
• Palom should use his strongest thunder spell on off turns when Porom is buffing the party.

Troia Area & The Magnetic Cavern

When inside the Magnetic Cavern you will instantly wipe if all 4 members are equipped with anything made of metal.

The following setup is recommended:

• [Front Row] Cid: Wooden Hammer, Feathered Cap, Kenpo Gi, Ruby Ring
  
• [Back Row] Tellah: Rod of Change, Wizard's Hat, Gaia Gear, Ruby Ring

055 Draculady

• Found frequently inside the Magnetic Cavern.

• Weak against Fire Spells and Holy Swords / Spell.

056 Cave Naga

• Found frequently inside the Magnetic Cavern on B1 and B2.
  
• Weak against Holy Swords / Spell.
  
• Drops Poison Arrows.

057 Mindflayer

• The most obnoxious and elusive enemy in the game to try to fight by normal means.
  
• Found more frequently on B2 and B3 of the Magnetic Cavern.
  
• Fought much more frequently inside treasure rooms or on the first wooden bridge on B3.
  
• Drops the Mindflayer summon for Rydia.
  
• Can be forced in to a fight with a pair of them on B1 when using a Siren.

058 Cave Bat

• Found inside the Magnetic Cavern just about anywhere.
  
• Found more frequently inside treasure rooms on B2 and B3.
  
• Usually accompanied by 055 Draculady.
  
• Weak against Holy Swords / Spell and Projectiles.

059 Ogre

• Found inside the Magnetic Cavern just about anywhere, more frequently on B2.
  
• Drops Power Armlets and Giant's Gloves. Giant's Gloves being the better option of the two.

164 Dark Elf [BOSS]

• Boss of the Magnetic Cavern.
  
• Scripted fight that can not be won.
  
• Sustain his magical attacks by casting Shell and Curing everyone with Tellah / Cecil.
  
• The fight will be over after he either kills or weakens everyone in the party enough.
  
• Weak against Holy Weapons / Spell.

After the fight with 164 Dark Elf is over, make sure to optimize your equipment and quick save your game, also return Cecil to the Front Row and equip him with a Paladin Sword.

You will no longer succumb to the Magnetic Field inside the cave so long as Edward is playing his Harp and weakening the Dark Elf.

• Reflect is cast almost immediately on 167 Cindy so focus fire with Cecil, Cid and Yang's physical attacks.
  
• 167 Cindy is the White Mage of the trio and will revive the other two sisters if they die so destroy her first.
  
• 166 Sandy is the Black Mage of the trio and will cast high level spells, take her out after 167 Cindy is defeated.
  
• 168 Mindy is the leader of the trio and can order the Delta Attack if all three sisters are still alive.

Over World Mop Up & Eblan Castle

There are numerous enemies still hidden on the Over World and seeing as you have access to the airship you can travel to all these extra locations.

Eblan Castle is also full of good items and a lot of new monster-in-box enemies you would otherwise fight later.

173 Doctor, 174 Barnabas & 176 Barnabas-Z [BOSS]

Quick Save your game before this fight in case you make a mistake or just want to secure kills for every type of enemy listed.

• In order to spawn 176 Barnabas-Z you MUST kill 174 Barnabas and leave 173 Doctor alive until he exhausts all of his dialog. If you destroy 173 Doctor too quickly he will not spawn 176 Barnabas-Z.
  
• Make sure to kill 173 Doctor if you want to get a kill for his entry and reload your quick save to replay the fight and spawn 176 Barnabas-Z.
  
• There isn't much to this fight, use your strongest attacks and keep everyone healed.

175 Dr. Lugae

• Right after the previous fight with Barnabas / Barnabas-Z you will fight Dr. Lugae's true form.
  
• Do not hold back against him as he becomes a half-man half-machine abomination.
  
• His machine form will cast numerous status altering effects.

Sylvan Cave

The Sylvan Cave is a completely optional area and home of the Yang Frying Pan / Kitchen Knife / Sylph Summon side quest. If this area is not tackled before entering the Giant of Babel the Kitchen Knife will never be obtainable.

It is considered one of the most challenging areas in the game at this point.

Considering you have access to all 5 of your end game party members this is the most optimal time to enter.

Once you enter the City of Summoned Monsters you can shop around, locate hidden treasure chests, find the Rat's Tail and optionally fight both the King and Queen for their powers.
Defeating both the King and Queen will also grant you permission to take on Odin and Bahamut in battle for their powers later on.

192 Asura [BOSS]

• Queen of the summoned monsters.
  
• Encountered by talking to the King and Queen in the City of summoned monsters.
  
• The entire gimmick to this fight is that Asura will constantly heal herself.
  
• Cast Reflect on her at the start of the battle and attack her physically.
  
• Cast Haste on all your physical fighters to speed up the DPS dealt.
  
• Use healing items with Rydia and Cure the party with Rosa.
  
• After her defeat quick save your game and talk to the King to initiate the next fight.
  
• Once defeated will grant Rydia the ability to use the Asura Summon.

193 Leviathan [BOSS]

• King of the summoned monsters.
  
• Encountered by defeating 192 Asura and talking to the King of the summoned monsters.
  
• Weak against Thunder Spells.
  
• You must DPS down Leviathan quickly with Rydia's Thundaga Spell.
  
• Jump with Kain whenever possible to avoid 193 Leviathan's Tidal Wave attack.
  
• Attack with both Cecil and Edge as fast and frequently as possible.
  
• Cast Shell with Rosa to minimize damage dealt by Tidal Wave and cast Curaja every turn.
  
• Once defeated will grant Rydia the ability to use the Leviathan Summon.
  
• Once defeated will grant permission to battle both Odin and Bahamut.

Sealed Cavern

The Sealed Cavern is a story related area, please note you'll lose Kain for the upcoming Giant of Babel dungeon after its completion.

Make sure to tackle the previous optional areas (Sylvan Cave and Cave of Summons) otherwise you'll lose out on the Kitchen Knife throwable item for Edge.

Before you kill a 126 Trap Door quick save the game before the fight, damage it enough to see what it spawns. Once you have entries 126 King Naga and 125 Chimera Brain reload the save and kill them to maximize EXP profit.

• The highlight and gimmick enemy of this entire dungeon.
  
• Exclusive enemy only found in this dungeon in limited quantity.
  
• Any door that can't be automatically walked through is a 126 Trap Door.
  
• If killed before transforming the party will earn 30,000 EXP.
  
• Quick save before every one of these fights if you want to maximize EXP gained.
  
• Will scan party members and then kill them instantly on the following turn.
  
• If left alive with enough health it will turn in to a completely different monster.
  
• Useful for easily encountering 122 King Naga and 125 Chimera Brain.

182 Demon Wall [BOSS]

• Boss of the Sealed Cavern and Guardian of the Dark Crystal.
  
• Will attack after you exit the Crystal Room with the Dark Crystal in hand.
  
• The bane of many childhood existences unless you know the trick to defeating it easily.
  
• On your first turn with Rosa cast Slow on 182 Demon Wall.
  
• Every turn with Rydia cast Bio.
  
• On subsequent turns with Rosa cast Haste on all three physical attackers starting with Edge.
  
• Attack with Edge, Cecil and Kain.
  
• Do NOT Jump with Kain as it reduces over all DPS per round.
  
• Continually cast Slow with Rosa on 182 Demon Wall after all fighters have been Hasted.

You can not teleport out of this dungeon, you must walk the entire way back to the entrance.

Upon trying to exit the cave Kain will once again become brainwashed and leave the group for one more dungeon.

To the Moon Alice.

Before trying to mop up all the possible encounters on the Moon's surface I would highly recommend recruiting Fusoya, which is the entire reason you're here.

Head through the West Lunar Path on the West side of the Moon and work your way to the East Lunar Path and finally in to the Crystal Palace in the centre of the Moon to recruit Fusoya.

Fusoya is a powerful Lunarian Sage capable of casting all White and Black Magic.

I would also suggest buying a Ghysahl Whistle off of the Hummingways on the Moon before returning back to Earth with Fusoya.

This is so you can summon the Fat Chocobo inside the Giant of Babel.

Having the Ghysahl Whistle will allow you to steal 99 Sirens for your own personal inventory after the initial 99 are stored on the Fat Chocobo for a grand total of 198 Sirens.

You'll need these Siren's to summon rare enemies and the Flan Princess later on and they are obnoxious to obtain otherwise, so steal them from Sirens.

After the save point you'll walk across a elongated bridge, in the middle of the bridge you will face all 4 elemental fiends back to back so the same strategies apply to the previous encounters.

183 Defense Node, 184 Attack Node and 185 CPU. [BOSS]

• Boss and core of the Giant of Babel.
  
• This boss has synergy between all three parts and must be attacked in a very specific manner.
  
• The CPU will almost immediately cast Reflect on itself so do not use grouped magic attacks.
  
• 183 Defense Node must be attacked and defeated first or it will constantly heal the CPU.
  
• If both the 183 Defense Node and 184 Attack Node are defeated 185 CPU will strike with an instant kill attack until both nodes are regenerated.
  
• 183 Defense Node and 184 Attack Node will regenerate after death so long as 185 CPU is alive.
  
• After the defeat of 183 Defense Node, physically attack 185 CPU until it's defeated.
  
• Finish off 185 Attack Node after both the 183 Defense Node and 185 CPU are defeated.
  
• Attack with Cecil and Edge.
  
• Fusoya and Rosa should cast Haste on both Cecil and Edge on their first turn.
  
• Fusoya and Rosa can basically be put on standby and group heal with Curaga or Curaja to sustain 184 Attack Nodes onslaught.
  
• Rydia should take caution when casting spells or summons.
  
• It would be wise to equip Rydia with a whip for this fight and just physically target the CPU.

• Kill 183 Defense Node first.

• Attack 185 CPU with both Cecil and Edge.

• Attack with Cecil, Edge and Kain.
  
• Cast Reflect on your entire party to survive his Megaflare attack, then cast Holy with Rosa.
  
• Cast Bio and Leviathan with Rydia.
  
• Will use the Megaflare attack on the entire party after a countdown of 5.
  
• Once defeated will grant Rydia the ability to use the Bahamut Summon.

Lunar Subterrane B1 - B7 (Final Dungeon)

This dungeon is the longest and most confusing dungeon in the entire game with multiple path ways to different areas that lead to dead ends and back to previous floors.

Use an online map[gamefaqs.gamespot.com] to navigate it. Enemy encounters are very fickle in this dungeon especially past B3 where certain enemies only like to spawn in very specific locations so I will do my best to provide descriptions / screenshots of where to frequently encounter them.

This dungeon is very dangerous and you can wipe quite easily if you don't keep heavy watch on your characters HP levels between fights. Keep everyone healthy and quick save frequently. If you have to cast teleport to replenish your HP / MP at the pots in the Crystal Palace then do so.

This is also home of the elusive 157 Flan Princess that drop the Pink Tail. She can only be encountered in a very specific room using Siren items. If you do not have everyone equipped with Ribbons to nullify her Dance attack, it could mean a very long and drawn out fight so make sure you're prepared.

The Pink Tail, when given to the midget at Adamant Grotto on the Over World, will net you the Adamant Armor. This is the most over powered piece of equipment in the game, giving you ultimate physical and magical defense, as well as protects you from most of the status ailments in the game.

This area also has the best equipment in the game, both from chests and monster drops. Highlights include Protect Rings [152 Arhiman] and Crystal Rings [151 Red Dragon], Ribbon [142 Dark Sage] and Glass Masks [154 Wicked Mask].

There are also Ultimate Weapons to be found but they are heavily guarded by some of the toughest boss fights in the game. The guardians of the Ultimate Weapons are mostly just pallet swaps of other bosses / enemies in the game. They will be listed as they appear in order of how you properly progress the dungeon.

• Will continually cast Mega Flare on your group so make sure you DPS down quickly.
  
• Jump with Kain to avoid the Mega Flare attack.
  
• Attack with both Edge and Cecil.
  
• Use Curaja every round as Rosa and cast Slow on 190 Dark Bahamut.
  
• Cast Quake to pierce Dark Bahamut's Reflect spell with Rydia.
  
• Never cast Bahamut with Rydia or Dark Bahamut will just counter with another Mega Flare.

187 Plague

• Guards Kain's ultimate weapon the Holy Lance.
  
• Will cast a 10 second doom counter on the entire party, there is no avoiding this attack.

• DPS this beast down as quickly as possible with everyone's strongest abilities.
  
• Kain should attack to maximize DPS.
  
• Edge should throw Fuma Shurikens.
  
• Cecil should attack.
  
• Rydia should summon Bahamut.
  
• Rosa should cast Holy or attack with Artemis Bow & Arrows.

186 Lunasaur [BOSS]

This is the portion of the dungeon where the floors look like they're made of glass.

• Guards Edge's second ultimate weapon the Masamune.
  
• Souped up version of Leviathan that will double cast Tidal Wave just for a level / HP check.
  
• Will most likely kill off Rydia at the start of the fight so use Full-Life with Rosa after everyone is healed with Curaja.
  
• Jump with Kain to avoid any other incoming attacks.
  
• Attack with both Edge and Cecil.
  
• Summon Bahamut with Rydia (after you revive her)
  
• Keep everyone healed with Rosa and cast Shell if you can to reduce any more incoming damage.

151 Red Dragon

• 100% spawn in a pair with use of Siren on B8 and B9.

• Weak against Ice Spells.

154 Wicked Mask

• 100% spawn in a pair on B10 when using a Siren.
  
• Will cast Reflect and reflect magic off of itself to kill you.

• Has an enormous HP pool of 37000 but gives an insane amount of EXP and Gil.
  
• Drops Elixir's and Glass Masks which is arguably the best helmet in the game defense wise but will not provide the status protection of Ribbons.

155 Zemus's Mind

Before you step down in to B12 and initiate the final battle make sure your equipment is optimized. You should switch your formation so only Kain and Cecil are in the front row, have the girls and Edge in the back row.

If you have any left over Golden / Silver Apples now would be the time to use them on Rydia.

Rydia's HP pool is trash and she might be laying face down in a puddle of her own puke most of the fight.

196 Zemus [FINAL BOSS]

• Encountered during a scripted fight.
  
• You can not cause any damage to Zemus no matter which attacks or spells you use.
  
• You MUST use the Crystal item in your inventory to progress the fight and cause Zemus to transform in to Zeromus.
  
• You will not be credited for this entry until after you make your final after credits save.

197 Zeromus [TRUE FINAL BOSS]

• This fight initiates after using the Crystal item on 196 Zemus.
  
• Will cast Big Bang and do a crazy amount of damage to the entire party.
  
• Nullifies all status buffs and debuffs with Black Hole so frequently it's not worth buffing any one this entire fight.
  
• Jump with Kain to avoid Big Bang and deal maximum damage.
  
• Keep Rosa on standby and cast Curaja immediately after Zeromus casts Big Bang.
  
• Throw the Kitchen Knife or Fuma Suriken's with Edge the entire time.
  
• Attack with Cecil or have him use Elixir's or other HP / MP replenishing items.
  
• Cast Bahamut with Rydia or use her as an item support character. She might be dead most of the time if her level and HP pool is too low.
  
• Rinse and repeat until defeated.
  
• You will not be credited for this entry until after you make your final after credits save.

Thanks for the update, I've never used that strat before on the core... I'm old school so I'm using old school strategies from like Nintendo Power era... but yeah, I basically did this guide off of memory. Thanks for the update though, I'll add it as an alternative strat.

Your strategy on the CPU Core fight can use some refining. It's VASTLY easier than you are making it out to be.

Step 1) Kill Defense Node
Step 2) Use FuSoYa's staff to Dispel Reflect on the Main Core
Step 3) Use Bio/Holy/Flare (they cast quickly)

Repeat Step 2 if needed. It should die VERY quickly. No need to waste time on Haste or anything else. FuSoYa literally has the proper tool equipped as default.

Thanks, I updated the guide. This guide is like 2 years old now because I bought these games when they first released. I changed the description for 097 to be more specific but I'm not changing the floor... I think the B stands for basement... which is how I saw it when I played it.. I could be wrong but meh, you guys can figure it out.. B1, F1... it's the same shit... you're going in reverse because you're descending the tower.
