Road Redemption - post-skilltree gameplay guide
By Mr. n
This guide (which is a Work in Progress, as time and energy permits) will try to help players after they have maxxed-out their skill-tree, since the other guides do not seem to cover it.

I am making this guide for myself to help myself note what is working and what is not working when trying to get the more elusive achievements as well.

Also, as usual with my guides, it will try to list values whenever possible (which will not be always, since I cannot be bothered to re-check prices of everything I have already unlocked), in table form, if possible.

If you have any additional information that could help the guide in any way, please comment, so I can add it :).

Assorted general tips
Bug: When you buy ammo upgrades first and only then SMG upgrade(s), the max ammo of level 2 and 3 SMGs will be unupgraded! Watch out for it - better to have 97 ammo in level 1 weapon than 20 in level 3 weapon.

Get comfortable with shooting.

You can't block melee while you have a gun equipped - you can only dodge.

Big trucks (not regular cars or pick-up trucks) and motorcycles are your stepping stones. Shoot or kill them otherwise to regain the nitro you used up to catch up to them, repeat.

Kicking is faster than swinging. Even if an opponent started a swing at you, you can kick them faster than they can finish it, most times.

If you're getting ganged-up on or got hit more than a couple times in the same amount of seconds, hit those brakes. Go back and fill the guys that damaged you with lead. I lost count of good runs I lost because I thought I could withstand more than a few hits with a metal mace or a katana.

At least try to get comfortable with closely passing by vehicles coming from the opposite direction for the "close call" nitro bonuses. These are invaluable, especially when you're down on nitro and chasing a boss.

As most riders, you can treat other bikers (except your fellow Jackals - the ones with blue pacifist symbol above their heads) as mobile money/nitro/health dispensers.

Ammo upgrades are more important than gun weapon upgrade.

Not failing the level objective is better than completing the level fast/killing everyone/anything else.

Finishing the level with everyone else dead is better than just finishing first.

Finishing the level first is better than finishing second.

Finishing the level second is better than finishing third.

Finishing the level third is better than finishing fourth or failing the level objective.

Tunnels have ribs - if you manage to kick an opponent with force (i.e. gain momentum and bash-kick into them) you'll be able to kill them via environment in tunnels.

Rooftop levels never have friendlies. Shoot whatever you want.

I didn't notice any actual penalty for shooting/killing friendlies (though I didn't shot/kill many of them).

Pick-ups on the levels regenerate in a couple seconds. If you e.g. killed everyone in a race and are in no hurry, be sure not to choose between shotgun and pistol - just slow down, circle around and take both.

Later levels, the shop is going to be boring - only health/nitro upgrades. Make sure you do buy stuff early, so as not to be upgradeless before the end. After level 11 there are one-two worthwhile (or useless) upgrades and only health/nitro refills.

Try to keep your grenade launcher for the bosses. Or at least C4.

When using ♥♥♥♥♥♥ characters (i.e. pacifists/"no guns" or similar silliness) - using the Golden Bike might be a lifesaver. I managed to do the Campaign+ as Santa on my first or second try with it. Even despite not being able to legitimately kill anyone, you will be able to catch up to others if you have barely any nitro and since you can get nitro by close calls, it's not that hard to finish the game.

If you finish the game on Campaign+ difficulty, the Campaign difficulty will not count as completed for the character automatically.

Four bottom items in the shop are health or nitro.

Final race after killing the Assassin (the colorful one) will be completed successfully even if you die.

Assassin deals around 55 damage with regular attack (weaker chars can be one-shotted!).

Stats and tips for "Regular" riders
I don't list any stats that are 100%.

"Regular" riders will not change your gameplay much once you have the skilltree full and you are decent with guns.

"Regular" riders include:
  • Dutch (basic, baseline character)
  • Nitro Punk
    • 75% health,
    • 50% crit charge - I don't know if it's slower or actually faster charge rate
  • Gordon Gekko
    • 50% health,
    • 115% nitro,
    • 150% money gain,
    • 125% exp gain
  • Moto Soldier
    • 125% health,
    • 75% nitro,
    • 115% crit charge - I don't know if it's slower or actually faster charge rate
  • Freddy One Arm
    • "Game is Harder" - whatever that means,
    • 75% Health,
    • 80% Nitro,
    • 125% Damage,
    • Can Only Attack on Right
  • PC Master Racer
    • "Display Resolution increases nitro gain",
    • "Higher quality settings increase damage",
    • "Going below 60 fps hurts"
  • Theranos
    • 250% resource gain from gauntlet kills,
    • 70% resource gain from regular kills,
    • 115% max nitro,
    • 95% max hp
  • John Spartan
    • "Mouse/Keyboard Recommended",
    • No skilltree,
    • Guns Only,
    • "Gotta Go Fast" - once you slow down too much you start dripping blood (slowly),
    • Brakes Hurt - braking takes off a tiny bit of your HP.

TL;DR
Medal of Valor
1275
1500
15% increased XP gain.
One-time buy. Garbage, since you have maxxed XP.
Don't buy.
Medical Toolkit
977
1150
20% more health gained from kiling enemies
Will have to experiment more to determine the exact effectiveness
Buy
Mushrooms
3400
4000
Revive with full health when you die.
One-time buy, as far as I know. When you start at the 9th level for a quick half-run, these show up in the SECOND? or THIRD level. You can plan your shopping and saving-up accordingly! When you start from level 1 I encountered them at levels 7, 11, 13.
BUY. Actually save money up for these.
Ammo Belt
1020
1200
+15% max ammo
Unsure if additive or multiplicative. Unsure if pipe bombs, C4 or taser are affected by this one.
Buy.
Adrenaline
1020
1200
+10% crit damage
Unless you're able to track the tiny meter in the corner (I'm not) AND stack those, not worth it.
Don't buy.
Razor Blade
1275
1500
125% increased attack damage, and attacks are unblockable, successful attacks drain your health ((including shooting, even grapple!). Even auto-blocking enemies will not be able to block you.
It's only -1hp per successful attack. Just make sure you're not using too weak weapons - like John Spartan's default gun.
Usually buy - but think twice before buying it with low-hp or low-dmg characters!
Steroids
850
1000
+5% attack damage
Worth it in numbers; will have to do some experiments to be able to say what are the exact breakpoints (think enemies with 105hp and you're doing 100 dmg - that +5 is going to make it one-hit-kill). Unsure if additive or multiplicative. Unsure if it adds damage to guns (at least to machinegun level 2 on which I was able to spot it).
TL;DR
Angel Dust
1266
1490
+15 maximum health
Flat rate. Buy as many as possible if you can afford those. Not going to be always in the shop (you can buy max. 3 in any run!). Also gives +15 current HP.
Buy, especially if you're after a failed mission or using a morally-crippled character (i.e. pacifist Santa or someone who doesn't use guns).
Lucky Rabbit's Foot
850
1000
+10% cash find
Unsure how much cash you can gain without guns, but with guns I easily dish 3000+ a level (unless it's the ~1-minute desert or short rooftop race, when the time actually matters). For each regular kill you get 20 (+2 with Rabbit's Foot) - 425 regular kills would make it work... or a few of the "Money bikers" whose yield will be appropriately higher with it.
Depends on whether you have access to guns and your health pool is big enough to try and kill everyone instead of just doing the objective
Improve Nitro Injectors
892
1050
20% more nitro gained from killing enemies
Comment
TL;DR
Upgrade Nitro Tank
765
900
+15 nitro capacity
Even more useful if you're playing one of the nitro-crippled characters like Volter
TL;DR
This Time's the Charm

Cost???
Decreases max health by 60% in exchange for three extra lives
I haven't encountered this one yet, was this from an earlier version?
TL;DR
Midas Vest
1062
1250
+50% cash find, +50% XP gain, -40% armor
Unsure what does "find" in "cash find" mean? It could be good for characters that aren't going to melee much anyway.
A double-edged sword - makes you more vulnerable (you take more damage when struck, unsure about being shot at and crashing), but the pay-out - if you make it to the shop - more than makes up for it. If you survive, you will be able to buy more upgrades and even healing, but the chance you won't make it to the shop is more than doubled. If you take it with a small health pool, you will be a one- or two-shot meat.

UNBUYABLE
This upgrade is great and unbuyable. You have to use a rider with non-blocked skilltree and proper skill bought. The damage increase is substantial, makes for a lot of one-shot kills.
You can either have it with rider or not have it at all - not much you can do about it after starting a run.

Bike stats
I'm using only the regular one (Hundo CBD), Grutale 800 or the Golden Jet (makes some chars... well, not enjoyable, but possible to play as).

Marked so the comparisons are as accurate as possible.

The only problem is I don't know if anything here means anything - the stats could be all wrong for what I know and I wouldn't be able to check it.

Dutch (basic, baseline character)
Dutch (basic, baseline character)
  • Everything at 100%, no boons, no shackles.
Start at the back of the race, kill everyone you meet, be fast when you need to.
Moto Soldier
  • 125% health,
  • 75% nitro,
  • 115% crit charge
I don't know if it's slower or actually faster charge rate.

Start at the back of the race, kill everyone you meet, be fast when you need to.
PC Master Racer
  • "Display Resolution increases nitro gain",
  • "Higher quality settings increase damage",
  • "Going below 60 fps hurts"

The absolute best rider if you have a powerful PC.

My favourite.
Santa
  • 75% Health
  • 35% Nitro
  • Pacifist
  • Can Only Damage Bosses
  • Attacks gain Nitro
  • MidAir Nitro Glide

I played the game as Santa only once or twice (Campaign+) and finished it.

I used the Golden Bike, so I could catch up to the enemies.

Don't worry about the pacifist clause for bosses - Santa is a motherf***ing badass and one-shots (or two-shots if shielded) bosses.

Close calls and higher nitro capacity are a good combo.

You're not even going to be able to pick up the grapple.

That being said, if you manage to kill someone other than a boss, you lose 1hp per kill.

Take Mushrooms, Angel Dust, Upgrade Nitro Tank and maybe Lucky Rabbit's Foot; other upgrades (including Improve Nitro Injectors ("+20% nitro gain") which doesn't do squat!) are worthless. You can buy healing or nitro consumables if you need them, but buying other upgrades than listed will just be money burning.
Gordon Gekko
  • 50% health,
  • 115% nitro,
  • 150% money gain,
  • 125% exp gain

Not many changes from Dutch.

Play a little bit more cautiously.

Hit those brakes when you're getting ganged-up on.
Freddy One Arm
Freddy One Arm
  • "Game is Harder" - whatever that means,
  • 75% Health,
  • 80% Nitro,
  • 125% Damage,
  • Can Only Attack on Right

You have no idea how much you need to attack on left until you can't do it.

Fortunately, guns are one-handed ;)...

Also, he miraculously manifests left arm and hand while blocking melee for some reason.
Theranos
Theranos
  • 250% resource gain from gauntlet kills,
  • 70% resource gain from regular kills,
  • 115% max nitro,
  • 95% max hp

Do not use the Gauntlet*; it's ~25% of instantly ending the run. It's actually slightly lower - you can do it if you're feeling lucky and you're going to lose a level you cannot afford to lose and have mushrooms? Go for it.

*unless you absolutely have to.

One more note - the full skilltree helps - you have low chance (12%) to survive death... but, obviously, don't count on it.

Otherwise, play like Dutch.

As described above, I avoid using the Gauntlet, but I tried using it in the last race. I was able to use it ~15 times before my Mushrooms life got consumed and another ~5 times before I finally died. When I tried using it before (first/second level), it wiped me at 1-3rd try. Thus - unsure if it's 50% or stacking somehow if you don't use it.
John Spartan
John Spartan
  • Mouse/Keyboard Recommended
  • No Skilltree
  • Guns Only
  • Gotta Go Fast
  • Brakes Hurt

Unique combination of no Skilltree and guns only - you'd think it would be okay.

He can use explosives (slot 4) and taser (slot 1). Slot 2 permanently holds only his BB gun.

Sadly, his default gun (infinite ammo) held in slot 2 plainly sucks. Pretty much unusable - the damage is so low it takes over 5 shots to kill a regular biker. If you can't bind a mouse button to keep clicking, you're going to destroy your mouse trying to play with the default weapon.

Recommendations:
  • Get other guns ASAP
  • Upgrade guns ASAP
  • Do not buy Razor Blade when you're still trying to rely on his shrakpistol. Afterwards, it's optional.
  • Health is going to be a problem if you want to keep your foot off the throttle for even a bit - choose a slower bike - like Grutale.
  • Since holding a gun precludes you from blocking...
  • ... kicking and tunnels just became your best friends.
  • Given the starting shrak situation weapon- and skilltree-wise, you probably won't be able to kill everyone. It's better to win than to kill and lose.
  • Health will be low if you want to kill people because you will have to slow down somehow. Use roadside to slow down kinda-safely.
  • Since health is low, regaining it will be paramount. By default you get 5hp per kill back - Medical Toolkit ("Health Gain +20%" ) upgrades will help tremendously.
The Barbarian
  • Game is Harder
  • 95% Health
  • No HP drops [even the "Health bikers" will not give health! This means no healing outside shops!]
  • No Cash drops [even the "Money bikers" will not give cash! You will get the money for wins ONLY!
  • No Skilltree

You're only getting nitro and closer to the objectives when killing. Killing is, however weird this sounds, optional.
Stay alive. Money will be tight, healing only available at shops and via rare on-level pick-ups (the winter level with the big shortcut at the beginning is fantastic for a full heal if you get there). Remember you can stop and wait a few seconds for a pick-up to respawn! Full healing.
Manage your money so you can afford Mushrooms if they come if you think you may need them. Angel dust is welcome.
Elijah Price
Elijah Price:
  • 25 Health

  • Good Luck

Good luck.

Just joking!

  • Snort ANGEL DUST like there is no tomorrow (build up that max HP to a reasonable level). Sadly, max dust I have encountered in any run was 3 - giving you a whopping 70 max HP. Could have been worse ;).
  • Since your max HP is so pitiful, feel free to sell your soul for a Midas Vest if you have a good ammo pool - Midas Vest will be your downfall when you try to fight with melee weapons, though, so depending on your style
  • Ammo belts are a priority after Angel Dust
  • Weapon upgrades are necessary - the shorter you have to stay next to someone, the better
  • Razor blade is optional - and a double-edged sword, at that
  • Steroids are nice (e.g. doing 50-99 dmg to a 100hp enemy means it's going to take two shots. Doing 101dmg cuts that in half)
  • Kicking is your friend
  • Avoid crashing (-10 HP!)
  • Avoid fighting if you can't shoot the back of an enemy
  • Use The Golden Jet if possible, you can outrun enemies with it or catch up if you need to
  • Be prepared for a lot of restarting and don't be afraid to restart a bad run. Cut your losses, start a better one ;)
Felicia
  • Game is Harder
  • 25 Health
  • Gain +1 Max HP Per Kill
  • No Skilltree

Starting with 25HP and 85 nitro; only light melee weapon (level 1 since no skilltree).

Kills are easy, since you have access to guns. Remember to gather excess kills when you can (i.e. you have only one, barely alive assassination target left and plenty of time).

Angel dust works!

Since killing makes you stronger, abide by the TF2 Sniper's standard of have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
SpeedRunner
  • Experimental Gameplay
  • Use Mouse + Keyboard
  • Low Gravity and Drag
  • Brakes apply Gravity
  • Use Grapple to make turns
  • Grapplehook +9999 dmg
  • Infinite Nitro, works in air

Did you ever wonder how would you get through the levels if you could fly?

Yeah, me neither.

You will probably use "spawn me back on the track" often and kill that space key. It doesn't matter where your bike is pointed, as long as the grapple is pointed the right way. You can easily win races by flying through the mountains straight to the end zone (to or beyond the finish line). When you're grappling, you take less collision damage (but you will still blow up often).

The only upgrades you need, in order of importance:
Medical Toolkits, Mushrooms, Angel Dust, Lucky Rabbit's Foot.

Even weapon upgrades are optional since everything can be one- or two-shot with grapple.

Nathan Algren
  • 115% Nitro
  • No guns

Start with 390HP and 126 nitro; sword, light, heavy and long melee - all level 2.

Can't pick up even a grappling hook.

Obviously, you will be getting less money, so you might as well focus on environmental kills (kicks, mostly). Ammo belt upgrade is burning money. You will need nitro upgrades to fix potential mistakes. Mushrooms, as usual, are good. Razor blade is useful.
Jack Traven
  • 40% Health
  • 250% Crash Damage
  • Infinite Nitro
  • Infinite JumpJet
  • Use Nitro or Take Damage

Infinite grapple is not mentioned, but it's there.

You can kinda-safely slow down going off-road for a while.

Guns upgrades are needed, as you will not have much time to use melee weapons without getting hurt. That being said, being hurt by not going fast enough is pretty slow, ticks are not so frequent and not so damaging (1 HP per tick). Just learn to ignore the red vignette and kill someone every so often to top your HP up.

Obviously, buying Upgrade Nitro Tank or Improve Nitro Injectors upgrades is a waste of money.

* jumpjets are a good emergy-exit. You should develop a reflex to jump whenever you are about to take damage. It's kinda like the ejection seat in an aircraft, you trade a sure crash or hit against a possible crash.

* kill all mr money you see, if possible try to get 2x multiplier (kicks or beheadings)

more hints (1000character limit)

* camera-positioning: learn to move the camera so that you can see a couple of meters farther (e.g. when approaching a hill, move the camera up, so the camera looks at you in a steeper angle and you can see what's behind the hill a little sooner)

* tile-sets. Each map has a fixed set of segments (which are about a couple hundred meters each), which are stringed together differently. By identifying the next segment, you can now what kind of corner or hill to expect.

* jump jet control: when you are jumping and about the miss the road, oversteer towards the road and use the jumpjack for that small forward-accellaration that should push you back towards the road.

more hints /comments (feel free to include in your guide):

* due to strong rubberbanding it's not worth to stay in the first place during the middle of a race. It's better to stay close behind the 1st place and blast past them with nitro (or kill them) just before the finish line.

* corner-boosting: when you take corners too fast you will start sliding without changing movement-direction fast enough. When this happens you can turn into an even steeper angle and use nitro. The nitro will accellerate you towards the direction your bike is facing and you can take steeper corners with faster speed. As a bonus you will have more speed coming out of the corner. This technique is especially usefull in rooftop-races where all corners have the same angle and are very wirde and predictable.

Very nice guide. Here are some small comments/additions:

once you finished all driver-specific achievements, you will also probably have most of the remaning chore-achievements (including "cash money"). Also I think campagin+ counts towards the "road warrior" achievement.

> Try to keep your grenade launcher for the bosses. Or at least C4.

I prefer machine gun for bosses. You can kill the first two within seconds. For the assasin I like to tazer him first, except if I'm fully stocked on ammo when I meet him.

> Santa

also you get nitro for hitting riders with the candy cane

> Freddy One Arm

kicks and guns work as usual

> Felicia

only the first couple levels are hard. By the end of the game you should have >250 HP

I'm glad you think that :). Still adding to it as I go - if you have anything to add to the guide, please, drop a comment!
