MV Wilhelm Gustloff

Here is the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, a cruise ship that was built in the 1930s for the KdF, and most known for her tragic loss at sea that saw the most deaths in any ship sinking.


MV Wilhelm Gustloff was one of the ships constructed for Nazi Germany's "Strength Through Joy" (Kraft durch Freude) organization 1937. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine (German navy) in 1939 as a hospital ship and then a barracks ship. In 1945, she was one of the ships tasked with carrying German civilians away from Poland and the Baltic States as the Red Army advanced. On January 30th, 1945, carrying more than 10,000 people on board, far more than her capacity, Soviet Submarine S-13 sighted the Wilhelm Gustloff in the Baltic and fired 3 torpedoes. All torpedoes hit the Wilhelm and she sank in 50 minutes. Recent calculations estimate more than 9,400 people were killed, making the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff the worst loss of life in maritime history.
