(Discontinued) Day of Dragons: Unofficial Beginners Guide
By HadesMCV
Much of this information is outdated, and I am not currently in a position to update it. I am also not a developer or a member of the team behind the game, and I cannot assist with technical issues, take those to the Discord server.

As there was no updated guide for Day of Dragons here, I decided to make one myself. This is my first Steam guide, so criticism is welcome. It's also a work in progress, and I will be adding more information to it over time. I hope I managed to help people figuring out the game!

As the game is still in beta, much information in the guide may change, and some will only be added further down the line, so don't take anything as 100% set in stone yet.

The Spawn Menu
Once you have selected a server to join, you will be presented with a page like this:

Here you can select which dragon you'd like to spawn in as. Currently, only the Shadowscale (third from the left in the top row) is playable to everyone. The Acid Spitter Drake is also implemented, but to play as it you either need to own the DLC, or be nested in by some friendly Acid Spitters.

Once you have chosen your gender (male, female, or random), and your skin (if you have any unlocked), you can hit the spawn button on the bottom right.

After a few seconds you will be spawned into the map in one of a large number of possible spawn locations. (A few members of my clan have been attempting to map all the spawn locations, but it is an ongoing project.)
Some Important Things to Know
Lets get to the basics:

WASD is walking as in most games, with SPACE to jump and SHIFT to sprint.

C puts you into a stalking/sneaking mode.

Q is your ability button, which ability is dependant on the dragon you are.

I opens your Character Panel, which shows your stats, and your coordinates.

O opens the Social Panel, which includes your clan, group, and player list.

V is Night Vision, which you'll need at night, but don't use it when flying.

LEFT MOUSE will make you bite, your basic attack.

The SCROLL WHEEL zooms your camera in and out, and zooming all the way in goes into first person mode.

Holding RIGHT MOUSE will allow you to aim with a cursor, and this is usually more accurate in first person mode.

E is used for eating, drinking, and picking up, sometimes in conjunction with aiming.

Pressing R will sit your dragon down for a rest, to regain stamina.

Holding R for a bit will make your dragon lie down, and this is require for nesting.

Holding SHIFT + R will make your dragon sleep, and start the 60 second timer to safely log out.

F is to fly/land.

LEFT CLICKing while aiming with RIGHT CLICK will use your ranged attack, dependant on your dragon and age.

When flying, W will point you down, S will point you up, and A and D will bank you left and right respectively, similarly to a flight game.

SHIFT is used to speed up during flight, and SPACE to slow down.

ENTER opens the global chat box.

To use group chat, after pressing ENTER type /g followed by your message.

To use clan chat, type /c followed by your message.

To use local chat, type /l followed by your message.

You can change which chat you want to see by using the bracket keys [ ]

You can use calls with the numbers 1 to 5 as well:

- 1 is a general dragon call, or roar
- 2 is a threaten call, to warn others you will attack
- 3 is a greet call, just saying hi
- 4 is a wounded/surrender call
- 5 is the mating call, which can only be done as adult

Alright, boring tutorial out the way, lets get to the actual game.
Hatchling

The hatchling stage, the cute little baby dragon stage, can be the toughest part of Day of Dragons. As a hatchling you are small, slow, have very little stamina, and can't fly.

As a hatchling, while you can't fly you can be picked up by an adult dragon and carried around, at least until about 75% growth. If you are picked up against your will, you can also struggle free by clicking LEFT MOUSE a few times.

A hatchling needs 3 things to grow as fast as possible: food, water, and sleep.

There are 3 kinds of food in DoD:

Mushrooms

Bugs from Bug Mounds

And other dragons.

Realistically, a hatchling won't be able to eat other dragons if they're on their own. And even if they could, to a hatchling it only gives around 10% food per bite. The advantage of meat is that an adult can kill someone and bring the food to you, and as long as they periodically pick it up it wont despawn.

Bugs are a terrible food for hatchlings, as they don't give much to your hunger meter and they give you sickness. It works in a similar way to meat from dragons, being carry-able but not nutritious.

Mushrooms are the way to go for now. They give between 20 and 40% food to you, depending on how small you are. They are, however, not carry-able as of yet, meaning you need to stay near where they spawn. This can be dangerous.

For water, there are ponds scattered all over the map, and the large lake in the centre, but those will be covered in another section.
Good Growing Locations
Here I will be listing some decent to great locations for a hatchling to grow if you spawn nearby, or for a nesting group to keep their little ones alive.

First up, the River Pond. This place is used by many people, so sometimes its not the best spot, but there are many shroom spawns here and water for all. Coords are 410 S x 200 W

Next, we have a spot just north of the River Pond. There are a decent amount of shroom spawns, and with the river here you will always have water. Coords are 410 S x 170 W

To the north-east of the river pond, buried in the forest, is a small pond with a couple shroom spawns around it. Coords are 373 S x 170 W

Far to the east of the map, near the edge, is a forest with many shroom spawns, as well as a ditch in the centre with a pond. Coords are 321 S x 564 E

Just north of the big lake in the centre of the map is a gigantic tree. Next to the tree is a log with a few shrooms and a small pond. Coords are 221 N x 189 E

In the middle of the north-west redwood forest is a small clearing with a puddle that only babies can drink from, and a bug mound. Its not easy to survive here, but if you're determined you can. Coords are 443 N x 91 W

Just west of the lake and up the hill is a small forest with one gigantic tree, and a big pond with many shroom spots around. This spot is frequently used, so be careful. Coords are 150 N x 157 W

Juvenile
Juvenile is not too different from Hatchling.

As a Juvenile you are a bit bigger, a bit faster, and can fly, but you still aren't very strong.

Flying seems impossible at first, but it isn't. You just need to fall from a high enough height and press F.

Once you reach around 40% growth as a Juvenile you will be able to take off and fly from the ground. To do so, sprint and jump, then press F at the highest point of the jump.

As a Juvie mushrooms are still your best food option, but bugs are a bit more viable than before.

Also at the Juvenile stage you unlock bile, which you can see in your Character Panel. With bile you can use your ranged attack.
Adult

You've done it, you reached Adult!

As an Adult, you are now fully grown. You are faster and stronger, and you can fly up and down the map without much need for a break.

Once you become an adult, you are able to nest to lay eggs and invite others to them. Nesting gives lots of advantages over simply spawning in, which will be covered later.

You are able to pick up and carry hatchlings around as long as they are under 70% growth, by pressing E while they are near your mouth.
Breeding/Nesting
Once you are an adult, you are able to nest with another adult and invite friends or other players in as your hatchlings. Nesting is generally simple.

To begin nesting, a male dragon needs to hold RIGHT CLICK and aim their cursor at a female, and press 5 to initiate the mating dance. The female needs to respond with the same within in a few seconds to accept. Once the confirmation message pops up, the males job is done.

The female must then, while the male is still nearby, find a flat spot on the ground and press N to place a nest. Once a suitable spot has been found and the nest placed, you need to sit on it by holding R. Now, its a waiting game.

Shadowscale nests can hold up to 3 eggs, and Acid Spitter Drake nests hold up to 5. This is also the maximum number of eggs you can have in one breeding session.

Flamestalker Info:
nests can hold up to three eggs, like the shadowscale's
Growth and flight are significantly slower, meaning you're even more vulnerable. This makes it beneficial to spawn from a nest.
it is a pain in the neck to keep yourself fed, as food sources such as mushrooms and bugs give A LOT less than normal. There's even a point where mushrooms cannot nourish you at ALL. Your best source of food is mostly the leftover carcasses of bigger players.
Once you've become a juvie, then you're practically invincible to smaller shadowscales and acidspitters.
Your element is fire, which is a ranged attack. Anything that is in the path of the fire gets the "burn" effect, burning away their health until the ailment is healed. This makes you a killing machine, so long as you don't get caught without bile.
