Oh no, you're running too many things... Let's dial down the amount of programs running. First, check your idle CPU time when you're not doing anything. It helps to close any running programs like Google Chrome (which eats memory). Check your CPU first. As you can see, my CPU is an Intel Core i5 6500, which is good for games. Next look at the list of processes and order them from CPU top to bottom, like this: Look at all the non-system processes at the top. As you can see, Chrome is eating over 1 GB (gigabyte) of memory, which is fine for me, but for some is very troubling, especially if you game with only 4 GB of memory. Because we are trying to get Terarria to run well, I'd consider closing some tabs or completing closing Chrome so your chrome usage looks like this:There we go, now chrome is using only around 540 MB (megabytes). Closing applications can really improve your performance!

So you closed out a lot of Chrome tabs but your game still runs like garbage, well maybe it isn't your CPU, maybe it's your GPU! Your GPU ( or Graphical Processing Unit) is responsible for graphics that make the game look really cool, but it can get a little too cool, so much that your computer can't take it. This is because of your graphics card not able to load shades and detail very fast. As a result, your game lags and sometimes even hangs. Well good news! You can turn down the intensity of the coolness to make your game run faster! I'll show you a few locations where you can change the coolness factor. As you can see, I have my graphics set like this, and the game functions fine. However, some people may have issues, and I recommend turning down your graphics settings so you can enjoy the game.
Notes and extra tips
Since you made it here, I want to congratulate you on reading this! Oh, if you are a Mac user or other user that's not using Windows 10, I'm sorry, this guide doesn't apply to you. But for people who ARE using Windows 10, Make sure Windows Defender isn't blocking anything, because it might be blocking something important. Also make sure that you aren't burning your CPU either, just check Task Manager. Anyways, with that said, this is the end of this guide. I hope I made this as clear as possible, but if there's anything wrong, leave a comment!
BYEE!!
