The Forest: The Story

Much of the story is optional and, in many cases, can be completely ignored as you continue to complete the game.You can find many story elements that add to the story,some of which can be added to the survival guide in the tutorial section.Note.In the to-do list,the first activity listed is "Find Timmy".This prompts the player to start exploring the peninsula and progress through the story.The end of the game unlocks the creative mode.After finishing the game,the player can continue playing with the same save file.

The peninsula is assumed to be in Canada or another similar location.The Forest's setting includes a vast system of underground caves and large mountains, as well as the base forest floor of regular collapses,due to both the sounds the player can hear while in caves (rolling rocks) and the fact that several bodies (such as Christian Missionaries) are in an area accessible only by the rebreather still comes from a period of time without such technology.

This would mean that at least the mutants were already on the peninsula at this point,further indicating the artifacts as the cause of the mutants.

Sahara Therapeutics purchased the peninsula to conduct its experiments on "eternal life" and resurrection through the obelisks,and built a complex system of offices and research laboratories, which stretched from the mountains to the caves. The Jarius project was probably initially marketed as a program whose purpose was to treat terminally ill children.These initial test subjects may have been sick children whose parents had volunteered them for participation in clinical trials at the facility they were transferred to and continued to receive medical treatment. It is possible that Dr. Matthew Cross began experimenting with the artifact by using a living child to resuscitate one that had died.However,this would in turn result in the death of the child being subjected it would need to be revived at the expense of another,thus creating a cycle of infant sacrifice and res After the trial, they were placed in observation rooms where they began to develop genetic mutations ranging from grotesque physical deformities to highly exponential growth rates.These genetic mutations have been isolated and studied for their possible applications in other fields,such as cloning and adult longevity.At one point,something went terribly wrong in the lab,as shown on one of the video camera tapes; an Army escaped from its containment, which likely led to a cannibal / mutant riot that left the facility overrun.Almost all of the human inhabitants disappeared,leaving behind decaying corpses, bloody body parts and some living mutants and cannibals.This suggests this has happened quite recently,as lead scientist Dr.Cross can be found at the end of the game,dead. There are many abandoned camps scattered around the Forest. These groups include:
Cave divers.The diving camps are located deep in the caves, in sections accessible only by using the rebreather.
Cave climbers/explorers .They have tents inside the caves even in the non-aquatic parts, along with some tents on the inner wall of the cenote.
Hikers/explorers.Their sleeping bags and tents can be found throughout the forest.
Film crew.They have a larger field with modern tents and film equipment scattered around, with scripts for a "Survivor" type program found on the land nearby.These groups appear to have visited the forest in different times and all were cannibalized with no survivors.

The exact sequence of these events is unclear and could paint radically different images of Matthew Cross depending on their order.For a period before the fall of the workshop,Matthew worked for Sahara Therapeutics as head of the Jarius project,researching the Obelisk of Resurrection,as indicated by his credit in Orientation Slideshow.He was aware of the Obelisk of Power, as indicated by an email he sent noting it could tear down a This suggests that with his knowledge of the power obelisk's ability to shoot down planes and the resurrection obelisk's ability to revive Living Dead Children,shot down the plane where the player starts the game,hoping to acquire a live child,to bring their daughter back to life.

The player explores the Peninsula for a long time, preparing to reach the bottom of the sinkhole.
The Vault, located at the bottom of the sinkhole,can be opened with the key card It leads to the research laboratory.After exploring the laboratory,the player finds the Obelisk of Resurrection, with dead Timmy inside pushes him to a sacrifice when Timmy is hooked to an operating table.The player then realizes that Matthew has kidnapped Timmy to use as a sacrifice to bring Megan back to life. The player goes on a hunt for Megan,finding many of her childish drawings which they are just like Timmy's.Meet Matthew Cross dead,with crayons stuck in his eyes and mouth.A drawing by Megan suggests that Megan saw her father as a scary red monster,possibly giving why Megan killed her father.Megan is finally found,surrounded by drawings and toys. He sends a toy airplane flying in the air before crashing it to the floor and pointing at the player,suggesting that he knows who he is. Megan then suffers a attack and transforms into a mutant that behaves and looks similar to a Virginia,including spider legs and mutant children.After defeating Megan,the player returns her corpse to the artifact,only to discover that a live sacrifice is required.The player then uses a new key card found on Megan's body to go to a second artifact.This has the power to crash planes, apparently using an EMP. The player can then choose to use this power to shoot down a second plane or turn off the device and fly the aircraft safely.

After shooting down the plane, the screen goes black with the text "One year later".The player and his son are hosted on a talk show,where the player competes in a friendly tree cutting competition with the host,known as Doran.It is assumed that the player did the same thing that Matthew did, kidnapping a child and resurrecting his son. During the cut scene,Timmy is shown to have small tremors and jolts. Cheerful music turns into horror when Timmy starts having a violent ground attack, implying that she will mutate just like Megan did. The character rushes to comfort Timmy.Timmy's spasms suddenly stop and he looks at his father, and smiles. immediately switches to black and the credits begin to flow,the next scene appears in Timmy's perspective as he is now a young adult, in his small apartment, he looks on his bulletin board with a map of an unknown island (with the possibility that said island has a connection to the future plot).The scene ends with another cliffhanger as Timmy goes into crisis again.

If the player chooses to shut down the device,he will leave Timmy behind (even more signified as he burns his remaining photo of Timmy) and return back to the island with the possibility of being rescued (albeit without Timmy with him).The game will return to normal with pacification and horde mode unlocked via secret artifact, and 5 new craftable decorations.Enemies will be at maximum aggression after beating the game.
