I dig this groovy game. It was really fun to play. The stages range from "This ain't bad, I'm pretty good at this," to "Oh my God, I cant deal this with this! Where is my anxiety medicine? ::sobbing sounds::"
The thing is, the game is spastic about it too. I can do four gut- wrenchingly hard stages in a row, then hit one that I can beat in one go and under the speed run time, to boot. The game boosts your confidence just long enough to crush you then enjoys watching you swear at it.
Both my wife and I are avid fans of the platform genre. It stems from both of us being console gamers from the 80's. The harder the better and there is no shortage of aneurysm-inducing platform games on Steam. ESJ is a perfect example of platforming today. One of the key aspects of the genre should be tight controls and this game excels in that department. You will never complain about the dying because your jump was lagged, or the response time from your controller to the game was delayed by unnecessary animation. You die because you screwed up, not the game and that feels both comforting and a little saddening. No excuses but bad gaming skills.
Controls are first and foremost for the genre. Everything else is window dressing and depending on your taste will add to the experience one way or the other. Fortunately, ESJ scores well in the other categories. Classic pixel graphics with a unique style are both fresh and satisfying for an old gamer like me. While I'm not a particular fan of electronica or techno music, the game's soundtrack by EnV nails it from the first beat. The music never feels repetitive and is perfect for the setting the mood of the game. The music says, "Hey, here's a tough as nails game, let's go get some!" You jump in and keep jumping because the beat keeps pushing you. Very well done and even worth purchasing the soundtrack.
Electonic Super Joy is the complete package. It has great music, graphics and game play. Now I need to get back into it and finish those achievements. How the hell am I supposed to beat some of these stages without dying?"
