This guide has been completely overhauled as of November 29th, as modding has been getting more attention lately and I felt the need to update this seeing as it wasn't exactly the most well-formatted guide, nor did it meet my current standards.

Now read on and get modding, pilot!
Step One: Backups
As with any form of game modding, the first thing you should always do is backup all files intended to be modded.

With Titanfall 2's case, you'll only be directly editing four files - nothing outside of them should be tampered or messed with. The files you'll be needing with be located in Titanfall 2's vpk folder from where you have steam installed - for example, mine is located here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Titanfall2\vpk

Once having found the VPK folder, you'll need to find the four files you'll be backing up to a separate folder with the location of your choosing - I prefer making a folder on my desktop dedicated to game mod backups, but everyone has their preference.

The four files are as follows:
  • client_frontend.bsp.pak000_000.vpk
  • englishclient_frontend.bsp.pak000_dir.vpk
  • client_mp_common.bsp.pak000_000.vpk
  • englishclient_mp_common.bsp.pak000_dir.vpk

Once located, copy them into your backup folder. Do not move the file itself - simply copy and then paste.
Step Two: Required Software
With backups out of the way, you'll now be needing to be able to actually edit titanfall's vpk files.
There's a few tools capable of this, though the vast majority - myself included - prefer the use of Cra0kalo's "Titanfall VPKTool," as it provides the most usefulness due to it's ability to both unpack and repack files for use.

Direct download link[wiki.frontier.tf.s3.amazonaws.com] - Note that the link may not function properly when opened through steam, due to their leaving steam warning. If this is the case, simply copy the link and open it outside of steam - the file should then request to download.

WARNING.
From this point onward, you will be modifying game files through the use of third-party software. While this is not a bannable offense - and in some instances encouraged by Respawn (an example being the speedometer mod) - it's still a risk and should be done with extreme caution if new to modding in general, since messing with anything that shouldn't be messed with can trip the anti-cheat. It's highly advised to tread carefully and follow any instructions as close as possible. There's a very, very low chance of a ban actually occurring, but it's still a possibility.
Step Two½: File Organization
While not as required as the previous steps, it can be useful later down the line if you get more into modding Titanfall 2 and don't want to constantly reapply mods, or edit existing ones. If you'd simply prefer skipping straight to some mod recommendations instead, feel free to skip this section and go to Step Three.

Now, make a folder titled whatever you'd prefer - this will be your main folder for holding your extracted vpk files. I also recommend putting your Titanfall 2 backup folder in here as well, for easier access and streamlined modding.
Along with that, make a third folder with a title of your choosing - this folder will serve as the main base of operations for all things you want to adjust and mod.

At this point your folder should currently look something like this:

Inside your VPK folder, create three separate folders.
  • client_frontend
This is where you will extract the files of englishclient_frontend.bsp.pak000_dir.vpk to.

  • client_mp
This is where you will extract the files of englishclient_mp_common.bsp.pak000_dir.vpk to.

  • repacked
This folder will be for when your done adding modifications to extracted vpks. When repacking the now modified vpks with Cra0kalo's, repack them into this folder for easy access.
Example of what this should look like if done properly:

This is where the benefits of having this system of file organization comes in handy - by keeping the extracted contents of englishclient_frontend and englishclient_mp_common within their respective folders for modifying, they can easily be adjusted and added onto without the need to reapply mods you already have - since you're simply repacking the same extraction just with new adjustments. Along with this, if wanting to undo all installed mods, one simply has to replace the modified vpks with the clean backup ones in Titanfall 2's vpk folder.
Step Three: Mods
Now that you have the basics of what you need, you can get to the good stuff!
For finding mods and instructions on how to install said mods, I highly recommend heading over to the Titanfall 2 Modding Guide[noskill.gitbook.io] website. They cover everything previously mentioned along with some additional steps if one feels inclined.

All of their provided tutorials and instructions are easy to follow, even with some of the more technical ones. They have quite the range in catalogue for modding tutorials, and here are some of my personal favorites that I use when I play:

  • Customized Text[noskill.gitbook.io]
Custom titan eject messages, LStar text, Out of Bounds warnings - if you can read it during gameplay, you can change it!

  • Cleaner Main Menu[noskill.gitbook.io]
Gets rid of the "What's New" and "Spotlight" sections on the Menu, allowing for a much cleaner look with less clutter.

  • Campaign Ticks[noskill.gitbook.io]
Ever said to yourself: "Man, the ticks in the campaign are really cool looking. Wish they were in multiplayer."? Well now they can be! Just be mindful of the hitboxes being unchanged.

  • No Sun Flares[noskill.gitbook.io]
Exactly as it sounds - gets rid of those blinding sun flares and gives you the ability to look up without being flashbanged by the skybox. Works great alongside the origin launch command "+mat_sun_color "0 0 0"" to give all maps a rainy overcast look!

Play on the Northstar client, it's for server hosting, yes, but also works as a modding base. It's modding scene is huge.

I need to get models into blender, so far i have a .mdl file, every converter website says there is an error and all the YouTube videos recommend a file extractor called legion, however legion is uninstallable due viruses. Any suggestions?
