Introduction
This is a mainly spoiler-hidden guide to the Deep Woods. It provides some general tips for your way through the main campaign and tries to systematize all information that is necessary to accomplish all side missions. Note that while it does provide hints and tips on how to proceed through the main campaign it is not a walkthrough.

Comments are welcome!
How to Use this Guide
This guide contains two basic sections:
  • Basic Guidance:
Check the Gameplay Tips section for general information on what to pay attention during your playthrough.
Check the Game Progression section if you feel lost or do not know how to proceed.
  • Specific Guidance
These sections serve as references for all things collectible as well as for some other features of the Deep Woods that I felt deserved cataloging.
GENERAL GUIDANCE
Gameplay Tips
These are just some things I found to be helpful in playing the game:

Collecting Stuff
  • At the beginning of the game, collect all Scrap and items you can find because
    • you will need lots of Scrap for all the upgrades you want to purchase at the Upgrade Mill and
    • you can trade items for Scrap at the restored Crow's Nest Shop in the Grove.
  • In order to collect as many items as possible clear your bag every time you are close to one of the supplies boxes to make space for new stuff.
  • Increase the amount of available bag slots as soon as possible by
    • finding Kirby (2 additional slots) and
    • upgrading your bag at the Upgrade Mill.
In fact, I'd say upgrading your bag is much more important than any of the other upgrades.
  • Later in the game exchange valueable items in the shop for Scrap. Bloom Stones are worth a lot.
Spritelings
  • Pay close attention to the abilities of the Spritelings you obtained in order not to miss any gameplay mechanics. Check the Book if neccessary.
  • Instead of switching the "frontline" spriteling type by holding RB and selecting on the wheel you can push RB to flip through your field Spritelings.
  • Every time you are leaving an area check that there are no wayward Spritelings. Better even check regularly for wayward Spritelings to avoid unneccessary running around.
Side Missions
While the game defines a framework in which to play through the main campaign, it is largely open world and has some noteworthy side missions that you do not have to complete in order to finish the game:
  1. Once you reached the Grove and got your first main mission focus on Central Deep Woods and on restoring the facilities in the Grove since that will greatly facilitate your following gameplay. Everything necessary for those facilities is located in Central Deep Woods so you will also get a better understanding of what obstacles the game puts in front of you and how to (potentially) overcome them.
  2. As to the first main campaign mission, the Twins (Frostfields - North) are the easiest to find followed by Paper Planes (Wispwagon - East) and finally Toothpicks (Crystalfall Coast - West). I suggest making your way through Wispwagon rather sooner than later because it will also allow you to finish the repairs in the Grove. Getting through Wispwagon is easier with Kirby than with only Emberlings, one of which you will definitely need.
  3. Having found all lost Greenshields Grey Coat will task you with retrieving three lost artifacts which are located in Crystallfall Coast, Frostfields, and Wispwagon. Before doing that, pay attention to what Toothpicks and Paper Planes have to offer you. I found it especially rewarding to play through all of Toothpicks find-and-slay missions (6 consecutive bounties). Scrap Heap also has a lot to offer for a fully stacked Grove Trove (16 relics). However, none of these are required to finish the game.
  4. For guidance on the side missions check the sections below.
Game Progression
The Wild at Heart is very linear in its first "chapter", i.e. until you reach the Grove. But once Grey Coat tasks you with your first mission it can be difficult to find your path forward. I certainly struggled with the amount of perceived dead ends. For all those feeling the same here are some basic pointers on what you need in order to achieve what goal throughout the game.

Mission 1: Finding the Lost Greenshields
Goal
Requirements
Find the Twins
Emberlings
Find Paper Planes
Emberlings or Kirby
Find Toothpicks
Emberlings and Kirby

Side Mission 1: Repairs in the Grove
Goal
Requirements
Reward
Repair the Spriteling Hearth
None
Possibility to upgrade your maximum amount of Spritelings in the field
Repair the Grove Trove
Emberlings
Possibility to earn rewards by bringing relics to the Grove Trove
Repair the Upgrade Mill
Emberlings
Possibility to upgrade your health, your suction duration, and your bag
Repair Crow's Nest Shop
Emberlings or Kirby
Possibility to to sell and buy items.
  • How do I get Emberlings?
You come across them when you head to the western part of Central Deep Woods. Simply follow them.Do not let some crud stop you from repairing that one windmill.
  • How do I get Kirby?
Try and exit Central Deep Wood to the Southwest. You will need 20 Spritelings to remove that boulder blocking the way.
Once you have found all four Greenshields, you will be given a second mission. That will also trigger an expansion of your possibilities to proceed because
  • a new type of Spriteling is available in one of the areas that you have already visited, and
  • the Spriteling Hearth features more upgrades to your maximum amount of Spritelings in the field.
Mission 2: Finding the Lost Artefacts
As you'll easily find out each artifact is hidden in a shrine. In order to access those shrines you have to complete separate collectible missions:
  • Frostfield Mission:
Bring 5 crates to the lake in front of the Frostfield shrine allowing you to reach it.
  • Crystalfall Mission:
Bring 60 mussels to Cath allowing you to reach the Crystalfall shrine.
  • Wispwagon Mission:
Bring 8 stone slabs to the ground relief in front of the Wispwagon shrine allowing you to open it.
Mission 3: Bring Balance with the Never
There's not much to say here. Before entering the catafalque simply make sure
  • to have maximum health because you cannot replenish your health through sleep, and
  • to equip yourself for battle because you cannot access your stash anymore.

Spriteling Hearth
The repaired Spriteling Hearth allows you to increase the amount of Spritelings you can take into the field in steps of 5:

The maximum amount of Spritelings in the field is 60.
Heartroot Resin (Treasure Chests)
There is a total of 32 Heartroot Resin to be found in the Deep Woods. You require all of them if you want to purchase every upgrade offered in the Upgrade Mill. Most of the Resin can be found in Treasure Chests scattered all over the Deep Woods, for the remaining Resin you need to interact with the inhabitants of the Deep Woods. Unfortunately, if you are short of Resin there is no direct way of tracking what exactly you are missing. The problem is confounded by the fact that you most probably already have spent most of the Resin you found and did not keep track of how many Resin you found.

However, the following questions guide you on where you need to look / what you need to do to get the remaining Resin if you're still missing some for remaining Upgrade Mill content:
  1. Have you already retrieved 10 Grove Trove relics?
Check the Grove Trove with Scrap Heap to find out.
  2. Have you already retrieved 15 Grove Trove relics?
Check the Grove Trove with Scrap Heap to find out.
  3. Have you found 12 cats?
    Ask Litterbox to find out.
  4. Have you completed all Bounty missions?
    Ask Toothpicks to find out.
  5. Have you offended Rubbish with an offer for a deal?
Now what would Rubbish value the least?
If you can answer all the above questions in the affirmative you are missing
  • Treasure Chest Resin,
  • Resin from Lootbacks, or
  • Resin that is sold to you byCath.
Now, I could provide you with maps specifying the location of all Treasure Chests with Resin in the Deep Woods. But there is an in-game feature that is much more comfortable and only costs you 1007 Scrap. If you do not know what I'm talking about make sure you finish the mission assigned to you by Cath in Crystalfall Coast and talk to her after that. If you are still clueless:buy the compass from Cath and give it to Paper Planes who will offer you a Treasure Chest map indicating all the chests you have not found yet.

Here's a breakdown of where you will get what amount of Resin:

Scrap Heap
2
Litterbox
1
Toothpicks
1
Rubbish
1
Cath
2

For completeness' sake, there is one Lootback each in Central Deep Woods, in Crystalfall Coast, and in Frostfields.

... Do the Groggthuds not respawn? I'm just down to last bounty and I already cleared them all once. Please don't tell me I can't finish this because I did trove before bounties.

Yeah, page 8 is probably the easiest one to miss. Thanks for leaving a comment! :)

You saved my life with page 8 of the book... missed it the first time and explored the whole map before I gave up.
