General Documentation

This guide is essentially here for me to have a general area to keep information that has yet to be documented in writing (to my knowledge).

Foreword
Welcome to my "guide", though it's not necessarily a guide to anything specifically, but rather navigating something else entirely: the lack of documentation on this game. There is little to no wiki entries, nor specification in most other guides on Steam on specifics regarding certain parts of the game. This guide is for me, and hopefully you, dear reader, to further understand this game and how it works. Of course...

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Obviously.
Cellar Items
In the cellar behind your house, not only will you find the key to the previously locked shed, but there will be three items laid out before you.

This choice will determine your special move, your secondary power available to you in combat which requires recharging.

These are the following effects.

Item
Associated Move
Effect
Scythe
Charging Strike
You press a random key [x] amount of times, it deals [x] * 2 worth of damage.
Teddy Bear
Happy Thoughts
You press a random key with correct timing to heal all party members for 5 FP. You are given 3 opportunities to do so, allowing you to regenerate a total of 15 FP for each member.
Calculator
Friendship Flurry
Seven randomized keys appear above your head, and each individual key flies towards your opponent, dealing 2 damage per shot. You are given 7 shots, and upon successfully hitting all attacks, you apply the "Existential Crisis" (chance to hurt themselves instead of attacking for a few turns) debuff to the enemy.

Ending Criteria
True Ending (This is it.)
  • Complete every quest in the North, including Phoney's quests (find him by using the key found in the scrap metal pile on the left-most building in the North.)
  • You have to always obey the buddy's instruction, EXCEPT when he tells you not to take the left path (where you find the paddle).
  • Do not interact with any major glitches, EXCEPT for Milo in the lever puzzle segment before the final boss.
  • Contrary to one of the guides instruction, you don't need to utilize the Buddy Button at all.

Neutral Ending (Against the World)
  • Literally just play the game like you normally would and I guarantee you will get this ending.

Bad Ending (Forgive Me)
  • Disagree with your buddy every single opportunity. More often than not, this simply means choosing "No" when presented with a yes/no option, but it will vary on the situation.
  • Touch every major glitch, such as the Tortley NPC in Palchumville, following the long corridor in the mayor's mansion, and interacting with Milo during the lever puzzle.
  • Contrary to what is written above, when presented with the choice to kill Milo, kill them.

Alt Bad Ending (Pointless)
  • In the text-based portion, attempt to interact with the well (i.e. "go to well" or "look well"), which you would otherwise only have known about in the 2D section.
  • In the 2D portion, attempt to enter the chamber behind your house at any time before talking to Nana during the final quest in the North.
  • In the 2.5D portion, which can be accessed as soon as you finish fighting Groncho and retrieve the Sword, use the hidden tree path to enter the tunnel. You can find the tunnel near the split path from the beginning of the game to the left of a tree which looks different from all the others.
  • As a fun easter egg, if you try to force quit the application during the ending sequence, once you open the main menu your Buddy will override your controls and force you to run their application, thus locking you in until you complete the run, where it'll return to normal.
Save File Location
The save file is located within the registry, which you can access via Registry Editor, by typing "regedit" into the computer search bar. Open the files to this location:

Computer > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Not a Sailor Studios > Buddy Simulator 1984

Though it is understood to be kept here, there is no discernible way for a regular person (not accustomed to reading hexadecimal) to edit this in any meaningful way without corrupting something. For the average person, this is meant for backing up save data and transferring it somewhere else.

Where is Phoney found?

I didn't kill Milo and still got the Forgive Me ending. I don't think that choice ultimately matters very much.

Walked through the store by accident and got stuck. The fix is to press right shift + home and it'll restart the scene but keep your progress, thanks to Medium-Well on the discussion forums for this fix

The Teddy Bear can actually heal for a total of 10 FP if you get it "perfect," allowing for a maximum FP heal of 30 to your entire party. Now that's a lot of healing!

Bean Bash: Deals 5 or 7 damage up to 3 times, adding to a total 21 damage.

Bean Mash: You press a key [x] amount of times, it deals 1 damage per tap.

should be this. Either way should still the highest single target non-special damage in the game
