Intro & Story

Is an Action First Person Shooter developed by Valve and released November 16th, 2004.
Developed on the brand new Source Engine at the time Half-Life 2 revolutionized gaming with its storytelling, world building, characters and its hot new physics system. Enter the Gravity Gun - Valves hot new toy to showcase the physics sandbox within the game built with the Havok Physics Engine

Story
Half-Life 2 takes place 20 years after the events of the Black Mesa Disaster. In City 17 ruled by an alien race known as the Combine and old Administrator Dr. Breen Earth is now under Combine control with the oceans being siphoned, wildlife going extinct and the human race on the brink of collapse. Among the City is the Resistance. A group of Scientists and Rebels fighting for freedom and to stop the Combine once and for all. Lead by Dr. Eli Vance with colleagues Dr. Issac Kleiner, Dr. Ernie Magnusson and you, Dr. Gordon Freeman all survivors of the Resonance Cascade. With your trusty crowbar and equipped arsenal its up to you to take down the Combine and gain back control and freedom of Earth.
History
After the launch of Half-Life in November of 1998, a sequel began development on a new engine called Source which would go on to have many different variations throughout the years leading up to 2004's Launch including the Leaked build that contributed to a big rewrite in 2003

Half-Life 2 Beta became a famous point in history for the game, community and Valve when German hacker Axel Gembe leaked the 2003 Beta Build. Valve would eventually catch Axel later on but would suffer from the damages of the leak leading to a rewrite and delay to November of 2004

The launch of Half-Life 2 was a major success making it 2004's Game of The Year and helped push players to use Valve's new platform Steam at the time

Half-Life 2 would go on to spawn dozens if not thousands of community made maps, mods and conversions just like its predecessor

Over the years Half-Life 2 Beta would become a very hot topic within the community spawning countless recreations and conversions of the 2000-2003 Beta. Most notably, Raising The Bar: Redux, Dark Interval and Coterminus

3 expansion sized follow up games named Episode One, Episode Two and Episode Three would serve as the conclusion to the story with each episode releasing a year after each other starting with EP1 in June of 2006. EP2 in October of 2007 with the Orange Box and EP3 in December of 2008. Unfortunately Episode 3 never came out due to numerous development issues and burnout leaving the story incomplete and unfinished for nearly 2 decades

Bits and pieces of EP3 and Half-Life 3 would leak over the years giving insight into what Marc Laidlaw had in mind for the story including his famous Epistle 3 fan-fiction he released after he left Valve in 2016. To this day, the mystery of Episode Three still thrives and continues until Valve delivers...
Walkthrough
The Definitive Way to Play
There's many different ways to play Half-Life 2 in its 20 Year span but one specific way that stands out the most is with a couple mods that spice up the game in a fun way.

Cinematic Mod 2013 or CM13 for short is a pretty popular but controversial choice as is Overcharged. While both are unique ways to enjoy the game they offer a vastly differnt experience. CM13 for example changes the game almost completely from an artistic point of view from entire chapters being overhauled to weird choices like fully modeled cervix and an adult toy in Alyx's bedroom at Black Mesa East. They can be too game changing for some but i think i've found a great balance to enjoy the game again or first time with a good coat of paint.

Enter MMOD + Fake Factory Remaster + Condensed HUD + Project MMOD

Ultimately there's also Half-Life 2 RTX and the Remastered Collection but they're not released yet.
Combining one of them with MMod and the condensed HUD is a perfect combo for returning to City 17.
20 Years of Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 is officially 20 years old. Time really flies. It was the 2nd game i ever played after Half-Life 1 thanks to my Dad and i have found my love for Valve, Half-Life and gaming thanks to this masterpiece. Thank you Valve.

For its 20th, Valve has released a ne Anniversary Update similar to HL25th with tons of stuff including Workshop, Developer commentary and all 3 Half-Life 2 games in one package plus Lost Coast all from the main menu. It's a sweet deal and a really cool update i recommend checking out. They released some Beta footage from 2000, E3 2002 and E3 2003 including the Free TV's which is rare for Valve but cool nonetheless. I've also made some videos to commemorate 20 Years of Half-Life 2.

Deathmatch
Half-Life 2 features a Deathmatch mode as a successor to Half-Life 1: Deathmatch

The Deathmatch (commonly abbreviated as DM) mode, includes more of the features seen in other games that can be played in deathmatch mode. Of these features, the most notable are: instant respawn, weapons have a specific spawn point, quick traveling and special abilities (sprint, flashlight, etc).

In the Team deathmatch (commonly abbreviated as TDM) mode, players are organized in two teams, Rebels (Red) and Combine (Blue), both of them with different characters that appear exactly as they do in Half-Life 2. In the gaming aspect, TDM has almost the same rules like in deathmatch mode, except for:
  • Instead of only one player winning the round, the team with the higher score wins.
  • Depending of the friendly fire being enabled or not, a player will lose one score point for every teammate killed.
  • If the player selected a Rebel model for his character, and they are taken to the Combine team, they will get a random model from the list of Combine models. Nevertheless, if the player dislikes that character, they are able to choose another one from the list.
  • If the teams are unbalanced, the team with fewer players will not get players from the other team. Instead, they will get new players connected to the server.

Multiplayer
While Half-Life 2 is singleplayer only, it does have a separate multiplayer that you can play. Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is included with the game and offers Team Deathmatch and Free-For-All modes aswell as community servers with its own variety of content such as RP, Puzzle maps and cooperative adventure maps. If that's not enough you can play the singleplayer campaign (and more) with friends and randoms in a few ways.

GARRY'S MOD
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4000/Garrys_Mod/
Gmod allows you and friends to go through the HL2 story together as long as you have it mounted, which you should as its a requirement for Gmod in the first place

OBSIDIAN CONFLICT
https://store.steampowered.com/app/17750/Obsidian_Conflict/
While not released yet, Obsidian Conflict is a brand new co-op mod for Half-Life 2 that aims to improve upon everything that Synergy did while having its own identity. OC allows you to play through every Half-Life title from Half-Life: Source to Episode Two and a variety of community made maps and mods with friends and randoms. It's unfortunate the state of Synergy has came to but as time passes that branch of Source has become old and hard to work with

SYNERGY
https://store.steampowered.com/app/17520/Synergy/
The original co-op mod for Half-Life 2 that spawned the exceedingly rare Rebel Rush Achievement that you can only get by participating in the event. If you ever get the chance to do a Rebel Rush i recommend it as its a very rare occurrence but can be loads of fun. While Synergy 2 never happened, Obsidian Conflict is on the horizon
Workshop
With the 20th Anniversary Update Half-Life 2 now features Workshop support for campaigns, maps, ui, weapons, models etc similar to Gmod and L4D.

To upload your own content, at the main menu goto "Extras" and "Workshop". From here you can upload content of your liking for either HL2,Ep1, Ep2 or for all 3 as base content

While it cant be fully controlled DO NOT UPLOAD STOLEN CONTENT unless given permission.

Addons such as Minerva, Stanley Parable, Nightmare House 2 and others have been uploaded by those who arent the creator. Unless the mod is abandoned and the creator is MIA do not upload stolen assets of any kind without permission.
Achievements (WIP)
Unlike its predecessor Half-Life 2 features achievements, 69 in total. 15 story, 2 collectible, 3 missable, 4 misc and 9 killing ones

Modding & Addons
Modding Half-Life 2 is just as easy as Half-Life 1. There's different mods and addons for HL2 that are installed differently

If its an addon, it will most likely go into the custom folder or overwrite something. If its a mod, its going to go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods

Unpack any mod like MMod for example here and restart steam.

I've made a small list of mods i recommend checking out after you've completed Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2: MMod

Modpack
Like Half-Life i've assembled my own Modpack for Half-Life 2 to enrich and enhance the experience without damaging gameplay or aesthetics (somewhat). Everything included is optional of course but i encourage you play the intended way.

The pack will be updated from time to time with new stuff or removed things that don't fit or work anymore. If you happen to record/stream with the pack all i ask is you credit me and the authors that made the addons included.

With that in mind, enjoy and kill those Combine!
Conclusion
Thank you for checking out my complete guide to the Half-Life 2 Trilogy! If this helped in anyway leave a like and favorite and maybe share it around :)
