Introduction

The story begins with two brothers, Aldous and William Vanderboom, trying to create the elixir of life in an alchemy lab in the basement of a house on the shores of Rusty Lake in 1859. Despite the fact that the elixir was prepared correctly, William Vanderboom dies after taking it inside and becomes a leper soul. Inside his body, he finds a seed (for planting), which he later passes on to his brother Aldous. Aldous, in turn, calms his ghost brother, saying that it is quite possible to bring him back to life, and his seed will help in this. Then he drinks the elixir, turns into a crow (Mr. Raven) and sends this seed to his nephew and the only heir to his brother's property, James, with a note in which he asks to plant this seed and create his own family.

In the spring of 1860, James arrives at his uncle's house with his dog, and, fulfilling a request from a note, plants a seed that will later germinate and resurrect his uncle William (which James, of course, does not know about). From that time on, the ghost of William monitors the actions of his nephew and begins collecting the victims of the Vanderboom family for his resurrection. The first thing he does is find his body and pulls out his heart. This is the first of ten sacrifices required for his resurrection. It is also necessary to find three chronometers to access the roots of the tree, but this will be dealt with later.
In 1865, the unhurried James did marry the not beautiful girl Mary, who after 2 years gave birth to three children: Allebrta (with a large birthmark on her face), Emma and Samuel. After Samuel is born, they drink milk, Emma water, and Albert red wine (then I began to suspect that this guy is not easy).
In 1870, James discovers his uncle's diary, in which he learns about the elixir. William's ghost helps him find a secret staircase that leads to an alchemy lab. James tries to recreate the elixir of life that his uncle described in his diary, but after drinking it, he falls dead. Interestingly, the dog does not react to the elixir in any way. William's ghost cuts off his nephew's tongue, thus obtaining the second victim.
In the meantime, the children are growing up, and in the spring of 1876 an event occurs that, it seems to me, influenced their (children) relationship in the future. Albert really wanted a butterfly, but his brother and sister had a different opinion. With the help of a can and a slingshot, they got the unfortunate butterfly, but they were in no hurry to give it to their brother. In an attempt to take away the can, Albert received a strong push from Emma, from which he falls. And Samuel knocks the hive from the tree with a slingshot, which entailed the fall of it on the head of his brother Albert. Butterfly hunters have a lot of fun at the same time, but the ghost of William sees how thoughts about killing his brother and sister arise in the head of Albert, who has since started wearing masks, hiding his terrible birthmark (apparently, Albert was teased because of this stain).
Then the story, up to a certain point, is divided, telling us about the life of each child.
Emma

In 1884, Emma was engaged in crossing flowers, and was eventually crossed to the point that the flower conceived a son for her, whom she would call Frank. In 1891, Frank mysteriously disappears. Emma tries to find him with the telescope in the attic, but to no avail. Then he writes a note in which he writes "Dear son, I have been looking for you for a very long time. If you find this letter, look for me among the stars. Your mother", and gives it to Harvey's parrot, which is in almost every game in the studio. In 1895, Emma comes to her brother's wedding, and a year later she hangs herself, having lost hope of finding her son. William's ghost collects her tears, thus receiving another victim.
Samuel

In 1889, Samuel decides to fix the clock in his parents' house, and suddenly meets the fortune teller Ida. Ida shows him a magic ball in which he sees the future, namely: the suicide of his sister Emma; Albert in a scary mask (or not a mask); Samuel without eyes; a bearded man (who is actually Frank, Emma's son); a woman in a black dress and crown (Rose, daughter of Albert); a man standing at a telescope (the same Frank, but washed and shaved); photos from Samuel's wedding; a man with a deer skull and two dolls in his hands (Albert and voodoo dolls); bloody man (son of Samuel Leonard with trauma after the war); Mister crow. Struck by such pictures, he decides to link his life with this woman. They have a son, Leonard, and in 1895, Samuel and Ida get married, raising a family for a common photo.
Albert

Childhood trauma did not let him go, and in 1885 he did receive that very butterfly from childhood (which, as it turns out, was carefully kept) and kills it with a knife. The butterfly, despite several years in the box, begins to bleed profusely. But this was not enough for Albert, and in 1891 he assists Frank, Emma's son, on an unwanted journey to the bottom of the well (as we remember, the loss of his son drove Emma to suicide).

Looking ahead, I'll tell you that Albert Frank did not abandon him and fed him through the storm drain that connects the well and the alchemical laboratory. In 1895, he also comes to his brother's wedding, and becomes obsessed with his wife Ida.
Game of lies

In 1896, Samuel, Ida, Mary and Albert get together in the house and play a game of lies in which Albert gets the devil's card, and Mr. Raven gives him a deer mask. In 1904, the family reunites, now with Samuel and Ida's son Leonard, and together they play musical instruments to the elderly mother. After they have played their melody, the light in the room suddenly disappears, and the walls are covered with blood. During this time, Albert manages to kidnap Samuel and Ida. leaving two voodoo dolls to replace them. nailed to the wall. At the same time, their mother Mary dies. It is not known whether it was Albert's handiwork, or the magic melody, but it is not so important. It is important that the ghost of William receives another victim for the tree, namely the teeth of the murdered one.
Meanwhile, on the second floor of the house, Albert puts on a deer skull and takes two more voodoo dolls that are associated with Samuel and Ida. Cutting off the eyes of the dolls, the ghost of William receives two eyes, which become new victims (Samuel and Ida died from such procedures). Albert cuts out Ida's ovary, and in 1909, with the help of alchemy, artificially creates his own daughter with Ida, whom he calls Rosa. Here again, it is more convenient to divide the story into three parts
Rose

Rose, as a girl with a certain heredity (the father is a devil-sorcerer-alchemist-misanthrope and the great-granddaughter of a ghost), does not sit idly by, and in 1919 with the help of the Ouija board she learns that there is such a ghost in the house as William Vanderboom, namely her great-grandfather (kind of like that is called), he wants to be resurrected, and for this he needs sacrifices and chronometers. In 1932, she visits the family grave, unearths everything, and finds a gold chronometer. The other three had already been found by her cousins by that time.
Frank

What happened to Frank? The poor man all this time lived in the well, eating alms from Albert. He grew hair in all places (it was him who saw Samuel in Ida's ball), and in 1924 he decided to dump from the well. Fate was kind to him, because on the same day Rosa was walking there with the dog (the one that banged the elixir of life. Apparently, he helped her all the same). She saw Frank's note, and gives him what he asks for with the help of a well bucket (she kindly provided the dog urine to drink), and eventually pulls him out of the well. After that, he washed, shaved, and generally became like a man. He also decided to take revenge on his uncle Albert, and in 1826 kills him after playing chess. William's ghost receives Albert's brain as a victim. 4 years later, in 1930, he goes up to the attic and looks at the stars. When he aims the telescope at a certain constellation, the ghost of William becomes visible to the spirit of his mother Emma, who asks to help her son get her letter. After certain actions, Harvey's parrot flies to the window of the attic, Frank takes the letter, and with his help (it turns out there was a code to the box) he finds a silver chronometer. In 1933, he dances with his savior and part-time cousin Rosa, and ends up poking her finger. Her blood is sacrificed by Wilson's ghost.
Leonard

The same boy who, after a family tune, lost his grandmother and parents. In 1914 he went to the First World War. Interestingly, at the same time, next to him you can find a newspaper in which there is an article about the death of his parents (10 years later). After 4 years, he is injured, loses his leg (which William's ghost takes), and goes home. In 1929, Leonard goes in search of treasures on a map drawn up by Mr. Raven. As a result, he finds a bronze chronometer.

Finally, in 1935, all of Wilson's surviving great-grandchildren gather together in the laboratory. There they put the chronometers in their places, and the roots of the tree immediately twine around them. Wilson's ghost at this time places the roots in jars with victims, let the tree absorb them. Through the tree, the victims are passed on to the ghost of William, and as a result, he is resurrected as an infant in the arms of a rose that stands in the center of the lake. What became of Leonard and Frank is not known. The dog, by the way, is alive by the end of the game.

P.S.
Personally, after reading all the articles, I have a strange feeling. Many actions are done by the player (William's ghost), and it is not clear how it all overlapped with the actions of other characters, but I tried to describe it as harmoniously as possible.

"Interestingly, the dog does not react to the elixir in any way."
That's because the Elixir either makes you immortal or kills you, in this case, the dog is immortal and James died. James came with his dog in 1860 yet you can see it still alive in with Rose in the Graveyard in 1932.

It's nice to see the story written up that way, Albert is the creepiest of creeps :episweat:
