Measuring distances is a little tough, but there are some tricks you can use!
When if a safe spot (ie near a fire or inside). You can look in a direction, then adjust your view distance until a point of interest (POI) is just barely in view.

Additionally, you can walk between POI's and drop glow sticks. Glow sticks drop at a rate of APPROXIMATELY 1 stick per 10-12 meters. It's not perfect, but it helps (I was even going to label distances by the number of sticks between points, but I don't know if it's consistent between players and the view distance adjustments help anyway). Go ahead and try it out! :)

Also, I have a North arrow on there. This could be slightly off, so just adjust for yourself as needed. The problem is, your avatar holds it at a slight angle, so if you look straight ahead, and the compass says north, I consider the direction I am facing to be true north (not slightly off to my left the way the compass is pointing). I hope that makes sense lol.
