Introduction
A need I've recognized from other Receivers regards the timed challenges at the shooting range, so this tape will teach you a few techniques for completing them.

Once you hear nothing but static on this tape, you have absorbed all it has to offer. At that time, please make a copy and leave it somewhere another Receiver can find it.

This advice is based on my own experience, which may be idiosyncratic and incomplete. It assumes basic competence with all Receiver-standard firearms. It is also limited to the circular Bullseye targets in Lane Two. It was not tested on Killdrone Sillhouettes, so attempt those at your own discretion and adapt as necessary. If your Mindtech training has not prepared you against Spoiler Threats, you may want to visit this tape at a later date.

It works!

The Technique
The name of the game is volume of fire over per-shot accuracy.
  1. Keep a steady, brisk rate of fire. You should only be spending just enough time between shots to put your sights roughly back on target. Don't bother aiming for a bullseye every time. Assuming you only hit a 6 or 7 every second, you will still score 180 or 210 over thirty seconds, as opposed to spending two or three seconds to hit a 10 every time (totaling 100-150).

  2. Count off your rounds. Proactive reloading is faster than reacting to an empty gun. For semi-autos, load the extra round in the chamber at the start and leave one round in between reloads. For magazine capacity n:
    • Load n+1 rounds;
    • Fire n rounds;
    • Reload;
    • Repeat.

  3. Change tactics towards the end of a challenge. For revolvers, use a partial reload when time is almost up. For semi-autos, fire until empty (n+1) on your last magazine, or if time would end before you could switch mags.

  4. Take advantage of pauses. During the Multi-distance, you cannot score points while the target is moving. Reload even if you aren't completely empty. You can always come back to a partial magazine. You should also be resting your aim (releasing RMB / Q) during any reload, not just Multi-distance, to mitigate sway (thanks to Camari for the addition).

These principles should allow you to maximize your rate of fire and hit those high score targets. A few more tips if you're still having trouble:

  • If shots just aren't landing where you think they should, practice judging each gun's sights on the 10-shot limited challenges. Stand back one or two steps from the bench so you can see the monitor without moving. Line up your sights, take a shot, then compare to the monitor and adjust.

  • These challenges are an excellent opportunity to practice clearing malfunctions under pressure, but sometimes they can turn a winning attempt into a loss, much to our frustration. Read up on the causes and solutions to common malfunctions. Some experienced Receivers may even manifest proactive techniques to prevent malfs. Keep your eyes open.

Justification

The Beretta M9's requirement at 10m perfectly demonstrates the necessity of this high rate of fire technique. Even at that short range, a slower approach would require near perfect accuracy and speed, leaving you less than one second to line up thirty bullseyes in a row with one magazine change halfway through.

Because the Beretta is one of the most forgiving pistols, with the least recoil and clearest sights, it's a great choice to start practicing sub-second follow up shots.

If you have expertise to share, leave a recording on a floppy disk in a conspicuous location.

Thanks for listening, Receiver!

This tape will now repeat.

personally i found trying to figure it all out myself was the most fun. but im glad that there is a guide for those that need it, as some the challenges were very hard lol.

Its true, although this is harder for the revolvers obviously due to their lower ammo capacity (although I did manage to make the starter revolver gold first out of all the guns). The pistols with bigger clips makes this easier since you can pre-load them.

The timed ones absolutely matters how much lead you can put downrange rather than accuracy. Same goes for the "drone" challenges in the dome, I've found. So long as you have a decently centered shot, you're not going for pin-point accuracy.

I also generally reset the challenge entirely if I get a jam or malfunction of some kind just because it screws my entire rhythm up. Not all of the pistols are equal in this regard, some of them definitely tend to have technical problems more than others.

Keep trying! It's possible, but you have to keep firing at a brisk pace, even if you know you're going to miss. The trick is in learning when your sight picture is just good enough to score some points. You can see my grouping is all over the place on this target, but that's fine, especially on the Deagle. I can post video if that would help too. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2419851107

how the fuck do i do the 30 second 20m with the desert eagle. with its recoil its impossible. it also doesnt help that u get fuckin parkinsons when u pick it up

For the Colt Detective you want to be shooting double action. The goal is to put a total of 30 rounds down range in the 30 seconds. Take advantage of the long trigger pull of double action and hold down LMB as your recoil is still settling down, this means you will be shooting just as you center on target rather than 0.1-0.2 seconds after on target. Decreasing your FOV can help if you find it hard to aim on target.

Thanks. Do you have any tips on how to wield the Colt Detective, though? I seem to be struggling on it whether if I try and slow down to place my shots more carefully, or if I roughly centre target as fast as possible while rapid firing downrange. Only have 15m and 20m to go.

Ze Medic, I turned off flinching and got it first try haha

Any times for the M9's 20m 30s challenge?

These are legitimately great tips. i was struggling with the barretta and the colt detective, but after i tried it it took only about an hour to finish them! one thing though, turning off flinching in the settings really helps in the rapid fire ones.
