How to Get Started in Old School Runescape!

This is a walkthrough and guide to give new free-to-play players a strong start in the game.

Part 0 - Useful Notes (Very Important!)

Reading this guide

If you just want to get to the walkthrough part that you can follow along with, skip to Part 1 - First Steps. I still recommend at least looking at the wiki section below, first.

The walkthrough is not supposed to be super optimal. I will try to prevent a lot of backtracking, but for the most part this is just about providing a somewhat structured and informative way for a new player to experience their first hours in the game.

The Old School Runescape Wiki

Another thing you should keep in mind: This guide is not flawless.

I'm hoping it will be a huge help for new players. However, I am not perfect. There will probably be details I miss, or problems you run into that I didn't account for. For these situations, use the wiki.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

It is one of the best-kept wikis for a game i've ever seen. Even the most seasoned veteran of this game will use it frequently. For most questions you may have, there will be an answer in the Wiki. I highly suggest you bookmark it.

The Wiki also has its own New Player Guide[oldschool.runescape.wiki] that I suggest you use as a supplement to this one. It has a lot of valuable information, including many things I don't touch on.

What can I do in this game?

Runescape is a true sandbox MMO. This means there is no set order you have to do things in, and no limit to how long you can pursue some part of the game you enjoy.

You could watch tv and chill out while training Fishing, moving from spot to spot to catch the best kind of fish your level allows. You could drop your catches on the ground when your inventory is full to level as fast as possible, or you could store them in your bank.

These stored fish could then be sold, or used to train Cooking. If you cook them, you'll have created your own reserve of food, giving you an advantage when it comes to combat!

Or maybe you want to get into fighting as soon as possible. You could train your combat skills, sell your loot to buy new equipment, and eventually even team up with other players to take on incredibly dangerous and difficult Raids! These raids can net you some of the most powerful equipment in the game, either to keep for yourself, or to sell for massive profit.

You could even fight other players! In an area called the Wilderness[oldschool.runescape.wiki], players can roam by themselves or in clans, fighting other players for their loot and for bragging rights. Not only that, but there are several PVP minigames where you can compete for prizes and rankings too!

Like doing quests? Runescape has a lot of them. These quests can range from helping a farmer shear his sheep for money, to a dangerous world-spanning adventure that rewards you with an entire new spellbook of ancient power.

There are whole story lines of quests, and no shortage of rewards for completing them. Which leads me to...

Quest Guides

Throughout this guide I am going to be linking to quest guides on the wiki. These are comprehensive step-by-step walkthroughs that will help you massively.

There is also an awesome member of the community called Slayermusiq1 who has a YouTube channel where he has posted excellent video walkthroughs of every quest in the game.

If a video walkthrough sounds easier for you to follow than a text-and-picture one, feel free to bookmark that playlist.

One more thing about quests. Although the guides I describe above will give you the tools to rush through every quest you encounter, I strongly encourage you to take your time with doing quests. Jagex put a lot of effort into writing hilarious dialogue and truly interesting stories. If you rush through them, you'll be missing out on a lot of good stuff in my opinion.

Player Generosity

The Old School Runescape community is largely very fond of new players. It is quite possible that at some point while getting yourself established, you will encounter a veteran player that wants to give you a bunch of free stuff. You can take it if you want to, but I advise you to politely decline.

A big part of the fun in Runescape, at least in my opinion, is making your own way in the world.

Working to earn money so you can buy a strong new suit of armor you recently got the defense skill to wear, and knowing that your effort has made you more capable to take on the dangers of the world. That's Runescape to me.

If you are gifted tens of thousands of coins for no effort, it will definitely suck a lot of the fun out of the early game. The time you spend earning your own way is important. For meeting new friends, getting familiar with game mechanics, and preparing you for potential future grinds.

Also, some players might try to lure you to dangerous areas or worlds, promising free stuff. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Scammers, Spam Bots, and Reporting

It's possible that at some point you will encounter someone offering to do things like "double your money" or "trim your armor". These are always scams.

If you meet someone that asks you to give them anything valuable in a trade, I advise you to be extremely cautious and to check the Scams page on the Wiki.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

Scamming is against the rules of Old School Runescape. If someone is trying to scam you, report them by right-clicking on them or on one of their chat messages, and pressing the 'Report' option. Reporting scammers helps protect both you and any potential future victims of the scammer.

Another annoyance you may encounter is a spam bot. These are autonomous programs made by people to advertise websites and Discord servers that aim to sell you in-game items or gold for real money.

This is known as Real-World Trading and is very much against the rules of Old School Runescape.

Not only is it against the rules and will get you banned, but the majority of these people that claim to be selling gold or items will use the information they get from you to steal your account or your items.

RuneLite

There's an unofficial open-source client for Old School Runescape called RuneLite. It has countless quality-of-life features and it's perfectly safe to use, as long as you download from the proper website.

There are already guides up about how to use RuneLite on steam, so I won't detail how to use it here. I personally use RuneLite, but I won't tell you whether you should or not. Look into it and decide for yourself.

Now, with all that out of the way, it's time to actually start the guide! Woo!

Part 0.5 - Menus and Combat Skills

Settings

Before we do anything else, let's take a look at the settings menu.


Click the settings button, and then "All Settings".


I strongly recommend that you make sure "Hide roofs" is enabled. The other highlighted options are what I personally find the easiest to work with, but it is up to personal preference.

Take some time to fiddle around with the other options if you want. When you're done, close the menu.

Combat Skills

You can also learn a lot of this stuff from the blue-and-white Combat Tutors located near where you first spawn in.

One more vital piece of information though, wearing melee armor like platebodies and helmets will make it much harder for you to use Ranged weapons and Magic spells.


This is the Combat Options button. To choose what combat skill you want to train, click that button and select the appropriate attack style.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

Hovering over an attack style will give you a tooltip about it.

Melee:

• Accurate styles train the Attack skill. They also give a slight boost to your chance to hit.
  
• Aggressive styles train the Strength skill. They also give a slight boost to maximum damage.
  
• Defensive styles train the Defence skill. They also slightly decrease enemy chance to hit.
  
• Controlled styles train all of the previous skills at once at a slower rate.

The different melee attack styles also reflect the effects of the skills they train:

• The Attack skill is how accurate your melee attacks are and lets you use better weapons.
  
• The Strength skill is how hard you can hit with melee.
  
• The Defence skill is how good you are at avoiding being hit and lets you use stronger armor.
  
• The Hitpoints skill represents your, uh, hitpoints. It is trained by doing damage with any kind of melee, ranged, or magic attack.

Not all melee weapons will have access to every kind of attack style. If you don't see the style to train the skill you want, you'll have to pick another weapon.

Ranged:

The attack styles here are Accurate, Rapid, and Longrange.

Accurate increases chance to hit.
Rapid increases rate of fire.
Longrange increases maximum attack range.

They all train the Ranged skill, but Longrange trains both Ranged and Defence at the same time, at a slower rate.

Rapid is generally the best option for Ranged weapons, since the increased rate of fire significantly boosts your damage-per-second.

Magic:

Magic works a bit differently. You can cast combat spells straight from the Spellbook by manually clicking the spell and a monster. Or, by equipping a magic staff, you can use the Magic Combat Options menu.

In the Magic Combat Options menu, he book-and-shield button is the same Longrange attack style as Ranged, and the normal spell button just trains Magic. To use a spell automatically in combat, choose one of the two styles and then select the combat spell you wish to use.

The Magic skill is one of the most versatile in the game. It determines not only what combat spells you can use, but also staves, magic armor, teleports, and utility spells. It does not determine how hard you hit with magic. The only way to increase magic damage is by using more powerful spells.

A high magic level is very very useful to have. The teleports it unlocks will let you travel throughout this great wide world much more easily!

Part 1 - First Steps

Your Two Most Useful Tools

You can click that globe button whenever you don't have another menu open to get a full, detailed map of the world.

You can also click the wiki button, and then click on anything in the world or your inventory to instantly get a relevant Old School Wiki article about it.

These buttons will be your best friends while navigating your way around Gielinor. With Runelite, the map will also provide tooltips for the various icons when you hover over them. This includes the contents of mining and fishing spots around the world. Go ahead and take a few minutes to look around, if you want. Don't feel too overwhelmed, though.

For now, the only part you need to worry about is:

The "Beginner Zone"

The Lumbridge Bank

Banks are very important in Runescape. You only have 28 inventory slots, while the bank has 400 and can hold functionally-limitless numbers of the same item in one slot. All banks share the same inventory, so no need to worry about which one you put your stuff in.

So, let's get to the Lumbridge bank.


Go to the spiral staircase at the back of Lumbridge Castle and right click the stairs -> climb up.
Do this twice, and you will be on the roof.


Behind the counter will be a lady in white and blue clothes. This is the Banking Tutor. I suggest talking to her about how the bank works, and setting a bank pin. Be sure to keep your bucket and pot in your inventory if you haven't done Cook's Assistant yet.

On your way back out, if you have not already, pick up and do the quest Cook's Assistant.[oldschool.runescape.wiki] This is the typical first quest a new player does. It offers both an opportunity to get familiar with Lumbridge and some rewards. These rewards include both a boost to your cooking level and access to the Lumbridge range


This range has a lower chance to burn certain foods when you cook with it, and it is located near the bank. If you plan on cooking your own food, this range will be a good place to do it at.

Adventurer Jon

Unless you told the Tutorial Guide you were an experienced player for some reason, or you're an ironman, you should see a man called "Adventurer Jon" around here:


He's a bit of a controversial dude. He was added relatively recently to provide a somewhat more structured first couple hours to the game, and he will give you some gear rewards for following the combat path of his Adventurer's Paths.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

If you can't see Adventurer Jon, you can buy scimitars and leg armor in Al Kharid, past the toll gate. Get the best ones you can use to train. For money, you can mine tin and copper to smith bronze daggers and sell them to the general store, pick up drops from goblins, or just wait until the end of the next section to buy things.

Either way, I recommend you to have at least level 10 in your melee skills before you leave Lumbridge.

Combat Training

The fastest way to level melee skills is by prioritizing Strength, then Attack, then Defense. I prefer to do them in sets of 10 levels.


Levels 1-10 in Strength, Attack, Defense, Ranged, and Magic are best trained on chickens. Chickens can't kill you, and they drop raw chicken, bones, and feathers. The feathers only take one inventory slot, and can be used for fly fishing later.

Pick up all the feathers, bones, and maybe raw chickens until your inventory is full. Once it's full, store the bones in your bank and cook any chickens you have.

Your goal is to have 25 piles of bones in your bank for later. After reaching that goal, you could start burying bones for Prayer experience. You will probably also want some cooked chicken to heal yourself while training from 10s to 20s.

Combat skills from 10-20 can be trained on cows. Be careful, they can kill you if you aren't paying attention.

Cows will also drop bones, beef, and cowhide. Cowhides can be banked and sold later on for a bit of cash.

It is useful to note that ranged weapons, like bows and spells, can be used on creatures that are behind low objects like fences or rocks, preventing them from attacking you if they have no ranged attack of their own. This is called Safe-Spotting.

If you're feeling especially adventurous, you can try training in the Lumbridge Swamp to the south. The creatures here can be dangerous, and don't offer anything special in drops.

Shrimp Catcher

Before you go anywhere really dangerous, you're going to want some better food. And there's no better way to get lots of good free food than the Fishing skill!

Time to talk to Adventurer Jon about his gathering path. Once you have, bank everything in your inventory, except a few logs and a tinderbox if you want more cooking experience. Then follow the road south through the Lumbridge Graveyard.

You'll eventually come up on this spot:


Grab the encircled net and talk to the man in the blue and white clothes about Fishing.

I recommend chilling and catching shrimp here until level 10 Fishing, cooking them if you want to. Don't bother holding onto them though, they're not worth much.

Insert Bait Joke Here

Once you've gotten 10 Fishing, go back to Adventurer Jon and get yourself a fishing rod and bait as a reward. Then, with only the rod and bait in your inventory, head back south and fish using the 'Bait' option. When your inventory is full, go cook the fish on the Lumbridge range and store them in your bank. Keep doing this until you run out bait.

If you run out of bait before hitting 20 Fishing, take a net and start using it again until you reach level 20. It'll go faster than before, since you'll be able to catch anchovies now. I still wouldn't recommend keeping them, though.

After hitting 20 Fishing, feel free to do the other 2 gathering tasks if you want. I recommend you also get 10 Mining, by mining and dropping copper/tin near the fishing spot.

Ghosts and Sheep

Now that you have some levels under your belt and some food in reserve, you should do a couple more quests!

I recommend freeing up at least 21 inventory spaces and completing Sheep Shearer[oldschool.runescape.wiki] for a bit of money and a few Crafting levels.

I also recommend that you complete The Restless Ghost[oldschool.runescape.wiki] for a bunch of Prayer levels and a pretty nito amulet.

Since you've gotten all that food and combat training, you're ready for a real adventure. Ready to go find some treasure? Let's go.

Part 2 - The Stronghold

The Authenticator

Before we continue on, you are going to need to set a Bank PIN and to set up Two-Factor Authentication[secure.runescape.com] for your Runescape account. Don't worry, it's not difficult.

All set? Time to start.
________________________________________________________________

Getting There

First off, bank everything except your best armor and shield. Take out 26 cooked herring, substituting sardines if you don't have enough, and leave 2 inventory spaces empty.

If you don't have Adventurer Jon, you'll have to substitute cooked chickens or shrimps. If this is the case, be extra careful in this next section!

Then, open the Combat Options menu and turn auto-retaliate off. The reason you're doing this is to prevent your character from trying to fight the monsters you're going to be running past.

To reach the Stronghold of Security from here, you have to talk to Count Check, the vampyre in the Lumbridge Graveyard. He'll Check if you have a Bank PIN and an Authenticator. If you ask him if there is somewhere you can learn more, he will offer to teleport you to the entrance of the Stronghold for free. He will only do this once.

Once you've been teleported, you will end up right next to the entrance.


Head down and you'll find yourself on the War level of the Stronghold of Security. Search the nearby skeleton to receive a book describing an adventurer's journey throughout the Stronghold's different levels.

How This Works

On each level of the Stronghold you will have to pass through several rooms full of dangerous monsters, separated by small safe spots between pairs of doors. You should eat to restore yourself to full hp every chance you can, and move between the safe spots as quickly as possible. If you run out of run energy, it would be best to wait for it to replenish before moving on.

As you leave each safe spot, the door will ask you a security question before you can pass. These are all pretty common sense questions, and you can retry if you mess up. Refer to your map whenever you get a chance, to make sure you're on the right path.

When you reach the treasure room of each floor, if you have an Authenticator set up, you will be able to claim that floor's part of the treasure. Be sure to claim the treasure of each floor before going down to the next floor. Make sure you go down at each treasure room, not up.

War

The monsters on this first level are neutral and won't attack you unprovoked, so save your run energy for the next level.

________________________________________________________________

Famine

The monsters here are hostile and dangerous. Make sure you have at least 15 run energy and are at full health before leaving each safe spot.

Pestilence

It's only more dangerous here. Again, make sure you have at least 15 run energy and are at full health before leaving each safe spot.

Death

This is the last level, and also the most dangerous. The warnings I gave before go double here.

Your Rewards!

Congratulations, you've done it! Be sure to talk to the owner of that skeleton you saw at the beginning before you go. He's pretty ghoul.

For completing the entire Stronghold of Security, you'll have earned 10,000 gp, 4 new emotes, the ability to teleport to the end of each level of the Stronghold from its starting room, and your choice of either spiky Fighting Boots or proud Fancy Boots.

Both of them are equal, and I won't tell you which one to pick but the correct choice is the Fancy Boots.

Getting Out

To get back to Lumbridge, open your spellbook and use the Home Teleport spell in the top left of the menu. Remember to turn auto-retaliate back on.

Part 3 - Questing and Exploration

The Grand Exchange

By this point you may have already heard people talking about the Grand Exchange.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

The Grand Exchange, or GE, is a marketplace where any non-ironman player can place orders to buy or sell almost any item in the game. Since you're probably still under the New Account Trade Restriction[oldschool.runescape.wiki], you won't be able to sell most things here yet.

That's fine though, because in this part we'll just be using your newfound treasure to buy things, as well as working on lifting that restriction!

We also have a lot to do before we go to the GE yet. Don't worry, it'll be fun.

Preparing for the Next Trip

Before you go any further, make sure you've completed Adventurer Jon's combat path. You're going to need it. If you couldn't see Adventurer Jon, you can get steel & mithril scimitars & platelegs from Al Kharid.

Buy a spade from the Lumbridge general store and complete the first two clues of the X Marks the Spot[oldschool.runescape.wiki] quest, located inside the bar behind Adventurer Jon. This quest serves as an introduction to an activity called Treasure Trails.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

To Draynor Village

Time to visit a new town. Draynor Village is located west of Lumbridge, either head straight through the woods, or follow the road on the west side of the river.


Once you get there, go to the market square and talk to a man in a feathered hat called Diango. Diango will sell you an item called the Chronicle, as well as teleport cards. Buy the Chronicle and 12 teleport cards, then use the teleport cards on the Chronicle. This should cost you about 2000 gp total.

The Chronicle is a very useful item that will teleport you close to Varrock, one of Old School Runescape's largest and most important cities. It can do this as long as it is charged with teleport cards. Don't mess with it for now though, we still have stuff to do around Draynor.

Meeting the Locals

While you're here, finish the last two clues of X Marks the Spot and have a chat with some of the townsfolk. They're very interesting people.

The Bank Guard outside the Draynor bank can show you an interesting security video about a destructive bank robbery that occurred there.

Miss Schism, sitting near the bank, will tell you more about the robbery and its perpetrator.

The Wise Old Man is quite a character, and there's plenty you can ask him.

North to Draynor Manor

Once you've done what you want to do, go start Vampyre Slayer[oldschool.runescape.wiki], in the northern part of the village. Then, follow the road further north to find a distressed woman and complete the quest Ernest the Chicken.[oldschool.runescape.wiki] Feel free to turn off the Hide Roofs option in front of Draynor Manor for a second.

Important note, in order to leave Draynor Manor you have to exit through the store room on the east side of the ground floor. Also, do not try to fight Count Draynor yet.

Before leaving Draynor Village, make sure you have the casket from X Marks the Spot.

Port Sarim

Follow the road west, past a low stone wall, and head south to arrive at Port Sarim.


Port Sarim is a useful place, harboring many ships that can take you all over the world.

First, give the casket to Veos on the northernmost dock, just south of the bar. Then, start doing the Pirate's Treasure[oldschool.runescape.wiki] quest, up until you receive the key from the pirate.

The encircled spot on that map is the Witch's Potion[oldschool.runescape.wiki] quest, a very short and easy quest that will get you some Magic experience. I recommend doing it while you're here.

Welcome to Falador

Just a short walk north of Port Sarim is the shining city of Falador.


Since Falador is likely your first major city, take some time to explore it! You can get a haircut, visit the party room, and get yelled at for trying to enter the Mining Guild!

I strongly recommend going to the basement of the Falador Party Room[oldschool.runescape.wiki] to visit the Old School Museum. It's an amazing showcase of many of the biggest updates in the game's history, featuring a lot of the awesome content you may choose to take part in.

Once you're ready to move on, visit the encircled area of this map and start the quest The Knight's Sword.[oldschool.runescape.wiki] This quest is going to give you a ton of Smithing experience later.

You've accomplished a lot so far, and I think it's about time to finally get to Varrock.

Part 4 - Varrock

Freedom Of Choice

Heads up, this part of the guide is going to be a lot more hands-off than the previous parts. By this point, you should have a good feel for navigating the game world and the wiki. I'll still make suggestions on what you should do, but it'll be more like a list of things for you to keep in mind.

Getting to Varrock

Follow the road north out of Falador, and turn east. You'll pass through Barbarian Village, which is where the entrance to the Stronghold of Security is.

Follow the line to finally reach the Grand Exchange. Take your time to learn about what the GE is and how it works, as well as the items on offer. Also talk to James outside the GE to learn about Old School Bonds.

Shopping and Questing

Here's a few quest items you'll probably want to buy:

• A red, yellow, white, and black bead to complete Imp Catcher.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]
  
• The items required to complete Doric's Quest.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]
  
• Blue and orange dye to complete Goblin Diplomacy.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

And here's a list of useful things to do while you're in town:

• Romeo and Juliet[oldschool.runescape.wiki] can be completed entirely within Varrock, and it gives a lot of quest points.
  
• The encircled area on the map is the location of the librarian you need to speak to so you can progress The Knight's Sword.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]
  
• You can start, and do most of, Demon Slayer[oldschool.runescape.wiki] here.
  
• Visit the Blue Moon Inn to open that treasure chest from Pirate's Treasure[oldschool.runescape.wiki].
  
• While you're at the inn, talk to Dr Harlow about Vampyre Slayer.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

It's important to remember that the Chronicle you bought earlier will be able to teleport you close to Varrock 12 times before you need to buy more teleport cards. I suggest spending a decent amount of time making some money around here before you use your cards up. Speaking of money...

Making a Profit

The Varrock area offers a good amount of options for new players to start earning themselves some money. I'll go over a few options here.
________________________________________________________________

Mining

After completing Doric's Quest, you should have received enough Mining experience to reach at least 10 Mining. This will allow you to complete the Knight's Sword quest for a huge amount of Smithing experience, as well as make it easier to reach 15 Mining so you can mine iron.

Mining and banking iron to sell at the GE later is one way to make a bit of money. At 20 Mining, you will be able to mine silver from the southwestern mining area in Varrock.

Although, your real goal would be to reach 30 Mining to mine coal at Barbarian Village. Even beyond that, with 40 Mining you can mine gold in the large mining area south of Falador.

If you choose this path, remember to buy better pickaxes as they become usable. It helps with mining speed a lot.

Smithing

After completing The Knight's Sword, you might even want to smith the ore you mine. The best way to actually make a profit doing this is to buy rings of forging[oldschool.runescape.wiki] so you can smith iron bars without wasting any ores.


The best place smith metal bars is Edgeville, northwest of the Grand Exchange. It's the closest furnace to a bank for free-to-play players. It's also a hub for...

PVP

Edgeville is situated right at the, uh, edge of the Wilderness.[oldschool.runescape.wiki]

On Wilderness PK worlds, Edgeville is full of players looking to fight each other north of the ditch. Any unskulled player that dies will drop all but their 3 most valuable items, making this a potentially very lucrative activity. It is also the single most dangerous activity in the game.

Don't let that discourage you though. PVP is popular enough that, for many people, it's the main appeal of the game! There are a ton of YouTube guides about how to be a better PVPer in Runescape, so if you want to get good at it you definitely can.

Alternatively, you could try just looting items from dead players north of the ditch.

Don't take anything north of the ditch that you aren't prepared to lose.

Fishing

Fishing is a chill skill to train and has a bit of potential to bring in profit.

With a fly fishing rod and those feathers you collected earlier, you can catch and cook trout and salmon in Barbarian Village. Either cook and drop them, or use them as food to complete Demon Slayer.

At 40 Fishing, you can catch lobsters on Karamja. This will earn you some money, but not as much as other options.

Wines of Zamorak

I'll let the Wiki explain this one.[oldschool.runescape.wiki] Suffice it to say, if you get the Magic level needed and are patient enough to find an empty world to do this in, it can be a good profit.

Don't worry about the cost listed in the Inputs section. All you need to get started is some food, a staff of air, and some law runes. Being able to use Teleport to Falador would be a plus.

Other options

Part 5 - Runescape YouTube Series

Old School Runescape has one of the best YouTube scenes for an MMO.

There are dozens upon dozens of highly entertaining series where creators pursue all kinds of unique challenges on their accounts. I HIGHLY SUGGEST you check out at least one of them.

Swampletics by Settled, a series about an ironman account, with no bank, that is completely locked to one of the most dangerous regions in the game. His end goal is to develop this restricted account to eventually take on one of the hardest combat challenges in the entire game.

By Release, by the exceptionally talented J1mmy. This series is about J1mmy completing every quest in the game in the order they were released in on an ironman account. It's a lot better than it sounds, in no small part due to how hilarious J1mmy is. Not to mention his incredible original songs.

The Gielinor Games by SoupRS. A very high-production-quality series about two teams of OSRS content creators facing off in a variety of challenges that take them across Gielinor.

And many, many more. Seriously, there's a whole world of awesome content creators for this game. Give them a look!
