Donner Pass

ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ
"Megalomaniac" map of the Donner Pass. This map shows through the heighmaps an area of 45x45 km of the homonymous area from Truckee to Lake Spaulding (east-west) and from Hobart Mills to Tahoma (north-south) on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The pass takes its name from the unfortunate expedition of George Donner who in the winter between 1846 and 1847 decided to cross the Sierra Nevada together with the Reed family and all the employees of their farms. Due to adverse weather conditions, the caravan of 87 men, women and children had to stop on Lake Truckee, now Donner Lake. Only after a few months and three relief expeditions, the survivors, 48 people, were rescued in California. Unfortunately there were acts of cannibalism, because at a certain point, the food that was delivered only by the rescue expeditions ran out. Another episode for which the Donner Pass has remained in history, is the train No. 101 "City of San Francisco" which in January 1952 was stuck in the snow for 6 days along with the 226 people on board. There were two deaths among the rescuers: a PG&E volunteer who suffered a heart attack after managing to deliver food and medicine with a snowmobile, and a driver of one of the snowplow turbines who overturned during a maneuver to try to free the train.

The heightmap got treated in a way that McGlashan Point, Donner Peak and Mount Judah aren't existing anymore, as if the valley goes through and there is no water divide. Otherwise great map.
