Micro Mages on the Nintendo 3DS

Play Micro Mages on the go, install it on your beloved 3DS!

Introduction

This is a walkthrough-guide on how to get running Micro Mages on your portable cutie.

Requirements

• PC (duh)
  
• Any console from the 3DS family with Custom Firmware installed.
  More on that on 3ds hacks[3ds.hacks.guide].
  
• New Super Ultimate Injector 3DS[www.gamebrew.org]
  
• .CIA Installer for 3DS (ex. FBI)
  
• Micro Mages ROM (packaged with any purchase of the game in Steam and Itch.io)

Installation

Open the New Super Ultimate Injector and create a new project for NES (simply press F1).

Go to Project > Load ROM and select the Micro Mages ROM file. It can be found in ROM folder in the game root directory.

Note: If you don't know where your game is located, for Steam, go to game Properties > Local Files > Browse.

The program won't be able to find any metadata associated with this ROM, so just decline the prompt asking you to continue the manual search.

1. Enter general information by yourself. Long and short names can be the same, and game publisher is the Morphcat Games.
   
2. Set custom icon for the game. I chose the default steam one, but you can set whatever you heart desires.
   
3. Set injection method to VirtuaNES for 3DS. It adds a little bit of convenience over the default one with addition of multiple save and load slots, and a quick screenshot option. However note that if your game performance suffers, you might need to change it to the default NES Virtual Console.
   
4. Set custom banner image and its style. My preference is a flat style with this comfy background image. Again, you may chose whatever you want.
   
5. Final customizations that we need to address are the content options. Here we can set how the screen will render (recommended option seems fine), will the game pause when you go back to home screen (enabled Suspend Point option), and also there're options to edit background pictures for both screens.

Great! Now when that's done, you have to export the .CIA file from this program and send it to your console. Go to Project > Export CIA and save the file wherever you feel comfortable.

Copying the CIA file to the console

To actually access the console you may pull out the SD card from it and insert it into your computer. That in some cases will be much easier than the wireless method, but not everyone has an option of plugging an SD card into the PC. If you have that, just copy the file over to the SD card and proceed to the final (sixth) step listed below.

Otherwise, the other option will be to connect to the 3DS wirelessly and drop the game file in. For it we will be needing an FTPD client and a way to connect to it from Windows.

1. Open FBI on your 3DS and go to `Remote Install > Scan QR Code`.
2. On your PC open this link[github.com] and scan the QR code for the latest version. Confirm the installation on your 3DS by pressing A.
3. Open FTPD client while connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your PC.
4. On Windows, create a shortcut on your desktop with this target location:
%windir%\explorer.exe ftp://10.0.1.4:5000/
Note that the IP address may vary, so use the one that is showing on your 3DS as a local address.
5. Open the shortcut, create a fresh directory for your game ROMs if it's not there yet, and drop a previously exported .CIA file there.
6. When the file is successfully copied, close the FTP client and go to FBI. There, open your SD card and navigate to the directory where you placed that game ROM. Click on it and select install CIA option.

Congrats! You now have working Micro Mages NES on your little portable console only within ten minutes.
