Recycling Machine Mini Guide
От nomochan
Grinding for the "Recycling is a Concept" reward was a little frustrating to do when I had no clear idea how many items needed to be donated. So in my second play-through I kept track of how many items I donated and what rewards I received from the machine, including when I got the steam achievement. Hopefully by sharing my experience I can help others out aiming for the achievement and rewards! Spoiler warning if you'd rather not know what rewards you get?

Intro + Edit
So, I'm sure this guide has been HIGHLY requested so here I am giving the people the knowledge they truly desire...

How many damn cans do you need to grind for in order to get the steam achievement??

All jokes aside, I know this info isn't exactly essential but I happened to jot it all down during my latest play-through: hopefully it helps at least 1 other player?

EDIT: I'm glad to say a disclaimer is no longer needed, a big thank you to those that commented!
I can now confirm the number needed for each reward- the type of trash donated doesn't matter. Since I first made this guide, I've started keeping track of where I've obtained trash in the overworld/one quest reward. I haven't quite finished this so I'll edit the guide as I go.
Rewards + Number of items needed to donate
Reward 1 : Seer Goggles
charm stat boost = Defence +1, Luck +3, Hit Rate +200

Items donated: 5

I obtained these 5 from the cans dotted around the Junkyard map.

Reward 2 : Flashlight
charm stat boost = Defence +4

Items Donated: 10

Again, I got all these from just the Junkyard map.

Reward 3 : Cellphone
charm stat boost = Defence +10

Items Donated: 25

By this point, I donated all the items I found in the Junkyard map and a fair few I found in the Deep Well.

Reward 4 : Universal Remote AND Steam Achievement!
charm stat boost = Heart +10, Juice +10, Attack +5, Defence +5, Speed +5, Luck +5

Items Donated: 50

Oh boy, time to start farming cans! I had donated all items available in the over-world so I farmed cans in the Junkyard by joining and leaving fights (Kel will dig through the trash at the start of every fight)
General Advice
There are recyclables dotted around the over-world in watermelons or by smashing barrels with Aubrey. To help people avoid as much unnecessary grinding as possible, I've taken note of how many items you obtain in areas of the over-world/obtain via story or quests:

  • 1 upon entering the Junkyard for the first time (Kel digs around during the dialogue)
  • Need to check the Junkyard so this will be edited in
  • 9 on floor 4 of the Last Resort (the construction area)
  • 2 within the cave in Deep well (the route to avoid the tollgates)
  • 1 as a reward from a ghost after completing the Ghost Party quest
  • 1-2 from watermelons in a certain snow mountain

Farming for cans/computer parts:

Here is my original method: I farmed Cans by entering battles in the Junkyard (Kel will rummage in the garbage at the start of every battle). From about level 16+ you can run away from all foes with no trouble, so I just stood in front of an enemy and repeatedly entered and left fights.

Another method: A method suggested by Derplax in the comments is to fight Dial-ups, as they occasionally drop Computer Parts. Combining this with Kel digging at the start of every fight, it could possibly speed up the farming process!

This took longer than I'd have liked, probably somewhere around 3 or 4 hours. If you're really keen on getting all achievements/want that sweet sweet universal remote, be prepared to sit and grind for a while. It really is all down to luck unfortunately! I get the feeling my luck isn't the best

Hopefully this will help someone out there! Please let me know if you know any more info on this so I can add it in if necessary! And once again, thank you to those that have provided help in the comments!

I've done the SHADOW DOG method every single time because I get around 40 LIFE JAMS and a bunch of RUBBER BANDS, SPARKLERS, HOT DOGS, and CHERRY SODAS. The LIFE JAMS, RUBBER BANDS, and SPARKLERS are pretty neat to have when you want to KEL NUKE and also always have revives handy. I've also gotten very lucky and very unlucky, and it's consistently taken be between 45 minutes and 2 hours. If you have a video to watch by your side it's tolerable with awesome byproducts.

kel scavenging in junkyard is definitely faster than doing the ghost dog. like 4x faster for me, because you get encounters way faster than you can repeat the ghost dog thing, even though the odds are slighly lower. also worm-bots in humphrey regularly drop computer parts and dead batteries in the current build of the game

theres a lot of watermelons with recyclables in the old sprout mole colony.
you go to the field left of the ladder that goes up to otherworld (where the scarecrow quest and large frame are),
and around the north west corner theres another ladder that takes you down to the colony :)

I can confirm, the method that Gabe mentions on Vast Forest with the Ghost Dog is much faster.

Simply get in and out until it appears, then pet. Got more cans within 10 min than a whole hour at the Junkard.

There's an alternate way to farm cans that may be more time efficient. In the Vast Forest, there's a dog house, entering the room has a roughly 1/4 chance of spawning a ghostly dog that drops various items like life jam, sparklers, and cans!

thank you so much! i received the cellphone reward but unfortunately ran out of cans to deposit so it never occurred to me to collect them in battles. onto my next playthrough then!

I donated different amounts of each item than you did and I still got the first 3 rewards. Pretty certain the requirement is just 5/10/25/50 total items donated, no specific amounts for each item

I'm a hell of a completionist and, unfortunately, that extends to achievements so this'll be a HUGE help, tysm-

so from the looks of it, you need to donate 50 junk.
