Basic Information about fishing
To get the Fishing Pole, you need to finish Chapter 3. Thereafter, the Fisherman can be found in the Plains (the Tutorial Level). After talking to him a few times, he will give you the Fishing Rod and tell you how to catch a fish.

Fish exist in three different sizes: small, big (or medium, whatever way you want to see it) and giant. Each fish's size is noted in parentheses behind its name in the table.

Each fish will feint a maximum of three times, meaning the fourth attempt will always be a bite.

If you let a fish feint four times, he will vanish. Another fish will then be drawn to your lure. However, if you miss or fail to catch a fish, you will need to throw your pole out again.

Every time you throw out your pole, you get a new combination of fish.

Every fish can be caught using the teacher's pole, you do not need another one.
(I must admit though, that I have not yet tested the other poles, so I don't know if they are any "better" or change the chance for specific kinds of fish.)

You can carry a maximum of 99 of each fish, so if you are at the maximum or about to reach it, think about going back to the teacher and trade your fish for some treasure.
Fishing Rewards
Why fish at all, some might ask. Well, there are different reasons. You can fish for fun, fish because you want a "complete" game or because you want to buy other items with them (feel free to pick any number of reasons).
You can trade set amounts of specific fish for various items when you talk to the teacher again. Those range from simple Treasures over normally available Items to exclusive ones.

I notice that, at the time of posting this, you are still missing some fish locations.
Here's something to help you get started, as one of you missing fish is the Red Sea Cucumber;

Can't seem to read anything past ZR1, Steam cuts off the chart, can't seem to extend it to show the rest of the information!
