How Anyone Can Beat Helm's Deep Reborn Solo
By kabyidon
I figured out that anyone can do Helm's Deep Reborn, even if you are garbage at the game, thanks to one WEIRD trick (good players hate him).

Introduction
Are you tired of not being able to beat this map, and you can't find anybody to carry you? No worries, you can go it alone.

After watching the video "What's the deal with Helm's Deep Reborn?" by JAiZ, I decided to investigate the claims that he made that you can beat it with only two human players. I figured out that anyone can do Helm's Deep Reborn, even if you are garbage at the game, thanks to chat commands. If anyone can enlighten me as to why the map has these commands in the first place, let me know.

Why is this hard?
The main difficulty in beating this map solo is the lack of support for basic bot functionalities.
With three bots, this becomes a real problem. There are two main problems:
  • Bots do not use medkits.
  • Bots do not pick up ammo.

Medkits is not a huge issue because of the effectively unlimited pills later in the map, but ammo certainly is because there are many tanks and SI to take down and bots with magnums just don't cut it.

When you boot up the map, it describes to you many interesting chat commands.
First, take note of the chat command format:

!louis !bill !francis !zoey

These chat commands are an unique feature that I have not seen in any other map, and they move the L4D1 survivors to where you are when you type them in to chat. Use those commands to help you, probably at around Stage 5 or Stage 6. You can also use my autoexec link above for the key binds.

Strategy

This strategy requires some basic familiarity with the map. I highly recommend watching the Youtube video for a visual description since some things are confusing to explain. However, in summary:

Stage 1: Wall
  • PIck up the auto shotgun and magnum at the start, then swap it for the military sniper for holding the wall.
  • Use spare time to gather gas cans for Stage 2.
  • Hold the wall from the right side, pick off SI that try to climb the left.
  • At 3:30, get your auto shotgun back.

Stage 2: Wall breaks
  • Move behind the wall when the wall breaks.
  • The chokepoint is the break in the wall. Use the various molotovs and gas cans to the best of your ability to keep this area on fire.
  • There are also pills and other healing supplies: just use them and give them to your bots. You can't take them with you to a later stage.
  • When the message in chat appears, retreat to the stairs.

Stage 3: Stairs
  • There are two areas where the zombies can come up: the stairs and the rocks on the right.
  • There are two M60s behind you to help you deal with tanks.
  • At 8:30, you want to retreat through the fire behind you.

Stage 4: Gate
  • Gather 4 or 5 gas cans at the door to the keep.
  • After that, walk to the outer level and gather the rest of the gas cans there at the gate with the hole in it.
  • The strategy is basically the same as Stage 2, except you're shooting down a ramp. Use fire when necessary and throw it THROUGH the hole, so you don't set everyone on fire.
  • As always, use healing supplies when you can on yourself and your bots.
  • When the wall breaks, retreat to the keep.

Stage 5: Keep (downstairs)
  • Once the door to the keep opens, you should have the auto shotgun equipped. Get as close as you can to the witch and crown her, doesn't need to be very clean.
  • Throw your gas cans through the hole and try to get them as deep in there as possible. DO NOT set your gas can stack on fire.
  • Once again we need to hold a chokepoint, this time it's the keep door you just came in through.
  • The spawn area has some supplies. Switch your weapons to AK with laser and a melee weapon.
  • Since your bots are now only using pistols, the survivor team damage output is very low for tanks. I highly recommend using the chat commands here, though you don't REALLY need them until the next stage.
  • Use mollies and gas cans for tanks at the chokepoint. You can use the mounted gun.
  • There is a health kit next to the door, it is possible to get it if the door is mollied off for the infected.
  • At 20:00 you can move upstairs.

Stage 6: Keep (upstairs)
  • Pretty self explanatory. There are a lot of pills behind you. Throw them to you and your bots. The chokepoint is now the stairway (do you see the pattern here?)
  • The ammo pile does not last forever, make sure you stock up.
  • Once again, chat commands make this a lot easier.
  • The sun rises at 25:00, so retreat and go upstairs.

Stage 7: Charge
  • If you don't have a melee weapon already from the keep, get one.
  • Heal all your AI bots and yourself as best as you can.
  • Melee weapon is probably the easiest way to deal with the charge part. Just ignore your AI teammates, they will get stuck because the nav meshes are broken.
  • You need to find your way to the gate you held in Stage 4 and then run down the ramp. Once you hit a trigger near the bottom, all the common infected will die.

Stage 8: Wall Finale
  • You can hold the wall a little bit, but make sure to back off as far as you can as soon as the infected approach.
  • You only need to hold out for a couple minutes. There should be a boomer bile on the wall if you haven't used it: otherwise, just kite and run around and you'll win the map.
Conclusion
As I said in the video, I believe this map is doable solo without the chat commands, even in its broken state. I am looking in to fixing the bot navigation to remedy the current problem with the bot survivors, until then, this is the only way I've seen anyone do it solo.

Thanks for reading and please comment if you have any other suggestions.
