There's a lot of new islands all over the place, and I don't think there's just one way into the new areas. To compare where the new stuff is, in the upper-right corner of the map, you can open the menu and select the previous 1.0.3 map to see where islands appear.

I'm fairly certain I've now finished the game, but I maxed out at 599 islands, and the ones showing up in red on the live map seem to be places I've already been plus didn't update when I returned. Is it possible you're picking up some deprecated islands?
