Camden & Amboy 0-8-0 'Monster'

Descripción
Don't worry, you're not on the happy juice, this actually existed.

This abomination was built for the early American railroad, the Camden and Amboy Railroad. The C.&.A.R.R seem to be the CEO of weird early American locomotives, having had the John Stephens 6-2-0 Crampton (on my workshop too) under its belt.

The C.&.A.R.R is also famous for having (one) of the earliest locomotives to operate in America, the 'John Bull' (also on my workshop).

However, this takes the cake.

So just what am I looking at?
So, this is a lever drive locomotive, with the intent of gaining mechanical advantage through the use of levers and pivots to get more out of the engine. I also assume that, in this case, it was to be able to fit the cylinders on a 0-8-0 locomotive, as the lever drive mechanism allows you to 'double back' the motion.

The bizzare arrangement of moving metal on each side of this locomotive is actually rather simple (trust me I had to animate it). So, here goes... The piston is at a 15 degree angle, and oscillates half of a beam using a connecting rod. From the beam, a connecting rod connects to the wheels as you would from regular locomotives.

Now, there's a difference between the model I have made and the original, and that was the fact it actually had a combination of gear drive and coupling rods.

For my own sanity I omitted this as it seems to have been a failure and quickly rebuilt into this version.

So from there, you connect the 8 wheels as you would any other engine. Add in some insane valve gear that I am not sure would work but whatever.

Okay, so... what?
Big, powerful chuff chuff. No do speedy, lots of torque. Makes many noise. 18 moving bits, lots of animate. Not very framerate friendly.

Hope you like my mod.

I do.

I estimated the stats off of in-game balance. It costs a fair bit. Does 20mph (any faster would be overkill I think)

Something I only just noticed about these is that the main connecting rod system is slightly inaccurate. In this model, it is a standard 0-8-0, but in reality, it is closer to an 0-4-4-0. The front pair of wheels were articulated, and linked by gear train. Just a small thing, this is still a great model!

You're a madman Steve. I like it!

So doing a run on my own test map and play through with this locomotive i've noticed its very hard to be properly equitable in coordination with the passage of time, i feel if the locomotives' maintenance cost was brought down from the 161k ish price down to say 155k ish price then the locomotive can still haul a lot and be more useful as an early mainstream used freight train.

I do enjoy using this train but i find it really hard to keep up with the maintenance cost.

Great work! ;)

Its like the opposite of the 6-2-0... slow, lots of traction, a complete contrast to the crampton

Sounds like a prototype shay.
(I think that's how you spell it. The mountain engines.)

Great to see more CARR Locos! Amazing to think that these are just the most weird, even their 4-4-0s were strange (Specifically this one https://ids.si.edu/ids/deliveryService?id=NMAH-AC0152-0000001) . There seems to be another engine called "Monster," built in 1869, which was an 4-6-0, and possibly another 0-8-0 (Called B&O 37 but labeled as CARR?). I hope you get as much of a laugh out of these as I did. Keep up the amazing work!
