Missing Textures Everywhere!

If you wanna do this for some reason.

Intro

Missing textures, you know them, that pink and black checkerboard design.
We're putting them in Portal! Or any Source Engine game, that is.

Prequesites

For this, you need: VPKEdit[github.com] (opening .vpk files)

macOS distribution of Wineskin if you want to run the Windows version: Wineskin Server[github.com]

While we could delete the textures themselves, we're moving them for convenience, just so that redownloading the textures isn't needed.

Moving the textures

Go to the game's installation directory you want to remove the textures from; for this guide, Portal 1 will be used.

<Steam installation directory>/Steam/steamapps/common/Portal/portal/

For convenience, create a folder where the game can't read them. (In the preview, the folder is called backup-of-textures.)
In this example, open the portal_pak_dir.vpk file in VPKEdit & extract all the files into backup-of-textures, and move everything except materials into the parent directory (portal).
FYI: Make sure that the .vpk file ends in dir before the extension as the other .vpk files ending in numbers are supplementary parts of the main one, but won't have the files inside them when you open them in VPKEdit.
Save it in a convenient place, say the portal folder; the name doesn't matter, as long as you Then, put everything from the folder you just extracted into portal.
Just remember to move the materials folder & all the .vpk files related to materials (along with the numbered ones) to backup-of-textures.

If you want to reverse the process, just reinsert the files from the backup-of-textures folder into the portal folder.
