Level select & restart
how to open developer console
there is no level (stage) select in the game. it was designed with roguelike paradigm in mind and it works that way

however you can use developer console to skip through the stages
  • open the file
    ...\AppData\Roaming\NineParchments\options.txt
  • find the line
    setOption(gameBaseApplicationModule, "CheatsEnabled", false)
  • change it to
    setOption(gameBaseApplicationModule, "CheatsEnabled", true)
  • during the game press F8 to open a developer console

how to use developer console
  • just type-in whatever command you need and press ENTER
  • use TAB to autofill the current command (until the first dubious symbol)
  • use TAB to show the list of possible commands (if ended with a dot .)
  • use ARROWUP and ARROWDOWN to select last used commands
for example you can get the list of possible cheats with the following command (mind the dot at the end)
cheat.
and pressing the TAB

important commands
cheat.startNextMission()
- starts the next mission (useful to skip around levels if you need to get a Quill from certain levels only or want to unlock a specific character
cheat.prevCheckpoint()
- teleports player to the previous checkpoint and set that checkpoint as active
cheat.nextCheckpoint()
- teleports player to the next checkpoint and set that checkpoint as active. that command and one above may lead to buggy death if there is an elevator on the stage
cheat.restartCurrentMission()
- restarts the current mission from the last checkpoint (Last Chance isn't restored). works even on hardcore difficulty and on GameOver screen
cheat.makePlayerActorsImmortal()
- invulnerability (need to reactivate each stage)
cheat.makePlayerActorsMortal()
- cancels invulnerability (need to reactivate each stage)

some useful examples
  • if you failed to complete some quest, then you can use "cheat.prevCheckpoint()" command to return at the previous checkpoint (before that quest), then use "cheat.restartCurrentMission()" to restart the mission and quest will be available again
  • in case of infamous "Amadeus Box" quest you use the following strat: don't pickup the box and play the stage as usual, until you find the statue, now use "cheat.prevCheckpoint()" to return back to the beginning of level and pickup the box, after that use "cheat.nextCheckpoint()" once and proceed to the statue. if you managed to break the box, then use "cheat.prevCheckpoint()" few times to return back at the beginning of the stage and use "cheat.restartCurrentMission()" to reset quest's progress
  • alternative method for "Amadeus Box" by @sanmay:
...what I then did was, I used the immortality cheat, carried the box with 1 player (it doesn’t break when you’re invincible), and let my other 2nd coop partner deal the damage. Works like a charm, too, especially when you’ve already completed the game a few times and are just tired of redoing all the stuff over and over again.
Staves, the list of
Staves are divided in three groups:
  • Tier 1 (T1) staves are unlocked by completing a certain quest or as a drop
  • Tier 2 (T2) staves are unlocked by collecting a certain number of Quills
  • Tier 3 (T3) staves are unlocked in the same way as T1, but only on hard/hardcore difficulty

Staves, help in unlocking
Cornelius's staves
Cornelius's staves are random drop from Shamans. there is two kind of Shamans in the game: regular and stormy. you need look for regular Shamans (they have white fur and their staff does not glow). regular Shamans are located at the following stages (on hard difficulty): 2, 5, 16, 27, 29, 31

Gislan's staves
Gislan's staves are random drop from Healers. Healers are located at the following stages (on hard difficulty): 3, 7, 10, 13, 14, 15, 17, 21, 22, 26, 29

Marvek's staves
Marvek's staves can be found at stage 11 surrounding by ice that can be destroyed be either fire or melee attack

Carabel's staves
Carabel's staves can be found at stage 10, need to protect the snowman from the incoming enemies

Rudolfus's staves
Rudolfus's staves are random drop from Shamans (like the Cornelius's staves), but you need to kill Shaman after all other enemies (i.e. the last)

Owl's staves
Owl's staves are random drop from Stormy Shamans, but it has a tricky way of triggering: you need to stun Stormy Shaman with lighting spell first and then attack with melee attack. Stormy Shaman looks like a regular Shaman but has yellow fur and his staff has a bright end (mind the difference on the screenshots below). Stormy Shamans are located at the following stages (on hard difficulty): 2, 18, 25, 26, 27, 31

Nim's staves
Nim's staves are located at stages 01 and 32 (the first and last stages). they will run away from you, use Blink to catch they

Amadeus's staves
Amadeus's staves are located at stage 32 (the last stage). first you need to collect all Cornelius's, Gislan's, Marvek's, Carabel's, Rudolfus's, Owl's & Nim's staves of a the same Tier (for example all staves that are rewarded for collecting Quills). then you can get those staves lying by

Selius's staves
Selius has two staves - one is a random drop from from Healers on Arena, the second one is located right at the beginning of Arena-6

The Entomaniac's Staff
Entomaniac's Staff is a random drop from Silk Tree Guard (stage 20 boss)

Anastasis's staves
Anastasis's staves are random drop from Anastasis (stage 32 boss)

Characters unlocking, regular
you start the game with two characters - Cornelius & Gislan - other characters are unlockable via in-game quests

Marvek
  • get any Marvek staff (Marvek's Kindling Staff, The Searing Staff or The Emberlight Staff)
  • travel to stage 13 and follow the stage until you get to the elevator to lift down, then follow right until you see a statue
  • during the task you need to fire up cold brazers and chase away the cold. you can fire them up with either fire or melee attacks. dealing with last four brazers unlocks Marvek

Carabel
  • get any Carabel staff (Carabel's Icicle, The Rimy Icicle, The Eventide Icicle)
  • travel to stage 14 and follow the stage until you see a statue
  • quest tasks you to extinguish brazers around the arena (use either cold or melee attack). after that the bunch of enemies will attack you. dealing with them unlocks Carabel

Rudolfus
  • get any Rudolfus staff (Rudolfus's Moon Staff, The Occultist's Staff, The Crescent Staff)
  • travel to stage 30 and follow the stage until you see a statue
  • quest tasks you to defeat three enemies in the special circles (sorta of given a sacrifice on altar). dealing with it unlocks Rudolfus

Owl
  • get any Owl staff (Owl's Lightning Rod, The Copper Rod, The Wolfram Rod)
  • travel to stage 31 and follow the stage until you see a statue
  • quest tasks you to defeat enemies around the robot and make sure the latter will stay alive. you can heal robot with life or lighting attacks. dealing with it unlocks Owl

Nim
  • get any Nim staff (Nim's Enchanted Broom, Nim's Boreal Broom, Nim's Worn-Out Broom)
  • travel to stage 32 and you will see a statue right at the beginning of level
  • quest tasks you to use a Nim staff (melee attack) to clean seven graffiti from the wall. dealing with it unlocks Nim

Amadeus
  • get any Amadeus staff (The Staff of the Artefact, The Staff of Trinity)
  • travel to stage 29 and you will see a box right at the beginning of level
  • for the first part, quest tasks you to get that box to the statue without breaking. you can levitate the box with any Amadeus staff (melee attack). box can be easily broken by enemies' attacks, as well yours. it is recommended to kill first two groups of enemies without taking a box, then travel back to the box, grab it and proceed further. or read about cheats above to save yourself nerves
  • for the second part, quest tasks you to defeat bunch of enemies with full magical protection (rainbow shield). use melee attacks or boxes to deal with them. dealing with them unlocks Amadeus

Selius
  • get any Selius staff (Selius's Staff of Shadows, The Staff of Nightmares)
  • travel to Arena-2
  • quest tasks you to catch Selius's shadow that randomly teleports and run on the area. dealing with it unlocks Selius
Characters unlocking, gilded
to unlock glided version of characters (it allows character to level up to level 60) - one need to complete required character quest (see above) one more time, but on Hardcore difficulty

some exceptions:

Glided Cornelius
  • finish the game on hardcore mode, he will be unlocked after defeating a final boss

Glided Gislan
  • get any Gislan staff (Gislan's Staff of Verdure, The Staff of Serenity or The The Staff of Alcyon)
  • travel to stage 21 and follow the stage until you see a statue
  • quest tasks you to escort the goat safely to the end of the level without getting it killed. goat can defend itself but its power not enough to deal with lots of enemies. it may damage you too if you get in its way. dealing with it unlocks Glided Gislan

Glided Gislan (Selius' Shadow)
  • finish Arena 1-5
  • travel to Arena-6 and get "The Staff of Nightmares" at the begging
  • drop down at the battlefield and revive Selius at the bottom
Hats, mechanics
  • opening the chest gives you a chance to receive a random hat from the pool. after getting a hat there is going to be a 20-30 minute cooldown in which you will not get any hat from chests
  • in case of not receiving a hat you get a EXP instead, according to the difficulty:
    • easy: 50 EXP
    • normal:61 EXP
    • hard: 72 EXP
    • hardcore: 101 EXP
  • in Steam version of the game, all obtained hats (including duplicates) are stored in your Steam Inventory. you can sell them or send to your friends; you can buy missing hats from Steam Marketplace
  • in non-Steam version you do not get duplicate hats, but instead get a 100 EXP for any repeat
  • there is 4 qualities of the hats:
    • common hats are available from the start, they have ~65% of drop chance
    • uncommon hats are starting to drop when the medium difficulty is cleared (at least once), they have ~27% of drop chance
    • rare hats are starting to drop when the hard difficulty is cleared (at least once), they have ~7% of drop chance
    • legendary hats are starting to drop when the hardcore difficulty is cleared (at least once), they have ~1% of drop chance
  • as you can see, to increase the available hat-pool you need to finish the game at least once on medium, hard and hardcore difficulties
  • when playing multiplayer, each player has its own hat-pool, i.e. players cannot "steal" each other chances to get a hat
  • the hat quantity of certain type in your Steam Inventory doesn't matter (in other words hoarding lots of common hats will not increase a chance of getting a rare hat)
  • playable character doesn't matter - any character can get any hat
  • difficulty does matter - you can get certain hats on specific difficulty only
  • stage doesn't matter - you can get any hat from any chest on any stage. the only exception isd the boss hats and Selius's hats (see table below)
    • hat "Crown of Anastasis", despite being a boss hat, can be obtained from any chest in the game

You made a mistake with Cornelius Stave being random which is not random.

"The only way to get Cornelius Stave is always is to kill all enemies first before you kill a Regular Shaman." It's not random that is how it's coded.

I played it over and over and over and it's not a random drop even your picture doesn't show enemies except the Shaman alone proofing my point.

There is wrong description abot at least 3 staffs: Gislan's Staff of Verdure, The Staff of Serenity and The Staff of Alcyon - a blink heals you not for +50% HP, but for +50 flat HP. It is not so good as sounded. :komsad:

*Note
For achievement [The Hero of Trine: Defeat all bosses as Amadeus], one needs to complete Level 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, and 32. Level 16 can be easily missed if console is activated to skip missions. The bullet of Level 16 does not indicate it is a boss level on the map.

This guide is great, I was just wondering something about the cheats menu. Is there a thing in the cheats that shows hitboxes or collision on the terrain? I speedrun the game and have found a few out of bounds and skips for certain fights but being able to see what surfaces allow you to walk on them would be really useful. Thanks again for the guide, the information about hat drops would've been really useful to me when I was first playing.

hello, @sanmay

it's been a while since I have played the game and I don't remember all those nuances - and can't tell what you are doing wrong, or what I have explained badly, or whether the game was patched - but I am glad you have managed to do it anyway! I will add your method in the guide to help other players who have the same issue. thank you! =D

Thanks for your guide, really appreciate your effort, absolutely great work! But today I found out that I obviously couldn’t use the cheat for the Asmodeus Box quest anymore, because when I entered the nextCheckpoint cheat into the console (I even went to the statue first and used prevCheckpoint etc.), I got instantly killed by an invisible force arriving there. Don’t know what I did wrong, tried it several times in multiple ways, it just doesn’t work. Maybe this option was patched out meanwhile, or there’s a mechanism I don’t understand :/ Anyway, what I then did was, I used the immortality cheat, carried the box with 1 player (it doesn’t break when you’re invincible), and let my other 2nd coop partner deal the damage. Works like a charm, too, especially when you’ve already completed the game a few times and are just tired of redoing all the stuff over and over again.
