The Lightning Gladiator

The clinking sound of chains was unheard as the stadium filled with cheers and applause. The gladiator stood firmly above his fallen opponent and reared back his head, sparks of static ruffled his grey fur as he released a soul piercing howl that fills the air and drowned out the crowd.

Iroh smiled to himself as he remembered last week's victory. His muscles rippled as he pulled gently on the chains attached to his gladiatorial armor.

"Hey, get up," the foreman approached and opened the door to Iroh's suite, "You're up next."

Iroh did not reply but instead gave the man a steely glare, his lips curled into a slight snarl.

The man "in charge" took a faltering step back but he kept a steady tone in his voice, "You've got a visiting challenger, calls himself Kaleidos."

Iroh shrugged as he stood and followed the other man, Whatever... who cares what their name is, the wolf smiled under his golden mask, No one cares about the names of their prey.

Iroh closed his eyes and his grey fur turned crimson as he walked the familiar path to the gladiatorial arena. He followed the sound of cheering crowds, the sound of clashing metal, the sound of victory.

The Combo Brawler

Where Iroh lacks in projectiles and a stage control mechanics, Iroh's strength resides in his ability to link together chains of attacks for devastating combos. The most notable mechanic to this playstyle is that Iroh's strongs don't knock opponents away but rather stun and brings opponents close to start or extend combos. Many attacks have special windows where they can be canceled early into other attacks or jumps.
  • Fstrong stuns and pulls hit enemies towards Iroh so that Iroh can combo them. Charge up this attack to increase its range.

  • Ustrong cause Iroh to leap upwards with his claws raised high. If he connects with an opponent he will grab them and throw them to the floor where they will bounce off helplessly to start a combo. Charge up this attack to make Iroh jump faster and higher.

  • Dstrong causes Iroh to lash out with his chain on both sides of him. The first hit will combo into the second which will then stun his opponent. The stun gets longer the more damaged the opponent is and with how long the attack is charged

Innate Passive: Sanguine Lightning
Iroh is not very fast and lacks any projectiles, and though his combo game is strong, well informed opponents will make sure to take advantage of Iroh's weaknesses. However, as Iroh deals damage, takes damage and successfully lands his counter attack Surge Protector, Iroh gains Sanguine Lightning charge. Once Iroh gains a certain amount, rage takes him over and he enters Sanguine Lightning mode. In this mode Iroh gets a series of changes that change his playstyle drastically.
  • Iroh's move speed on the ground and the air is drastically increased.
  • Many moves have changed frame data, with less wind up and end frames.
  • All of Iroh's Strong attacks become powerful kill moves instead of combo starters/extenders.
  • Iroh takes 4% self inflicted damage every 2 seconds he maintains Sanguine Lightning.
  • Dealing damage in Sanguine Lightning mode still gains charge but at a reduced rate.
  • Taking damage or being parried will actually reduce the charge of Sanguine Lighting while the mode is active.

Nspecial: Overcharge
Combo extender or kill move, Overcharge has two different modes that gives the Iroh player additional options in the heat of play.
  • Tap Nspecial: Discharge a multi-hit attack around Iroh that launches enemies caught in the blast a short distance which is easy to combo out of.
  • Hold Nspecial: Launch the same multi-hit attack but then follow up with a massive discharge of electricity that has medium kill power.
  • Sanguine Lightning: While Sanguine Lightning is active the explosion at the end deals bonus damage and has increased knock back.



Fspecial: Flowing Current:
After a short charge period Iroh streaks across the battlefield picking up any enemies he runs into on the way.
  • There is a short cooldown after use.
  • Inputting up or down lets you angle this attack slightly at an angle.
  • Sanguine Lightning: While Sanguine Lightning is active, the start up for this Forward Special is significantly reduced.




Uspecial: Storm Piercer
With this Up Special, Iroh launches vertically into the air carrying any unfortunate victims skyward with this fist.
  • Landing the first hitbox super charges this attack so that at the end Iroh releases a powerful shock that can kill opponents. However, if you miss the first hit box, this attack is much weaker and has nearly no killing power.
  • Sanguine Lightning: While Sanguine Lightning is active this Up Special does not put Iroh into prat fall.



Dspecial 1: Surge Protector
Surrounding himself in a protective surge of lightning, Iroh deflects any enemy contacts and knock back any offenders.
  • This counter special has a quick start, but a lengthy end lag so be careful not to be punished by whiffing.
  • Upon successfully countering an enemy attack also fills the Sanguine Lightning bar by 33%.
  • Sanguine Lightning:This move is unaccessable while Sanguine Lightning is active and instead is replaced by Thunder Break


Dspecial 2: Thunder Break
Iroh gather's all his rage and reaches deep into his connection to his aether to unleash a devastating torrent of electrical energy.
  • As Sanguine Lightning deals more and more damage to Iroh, Thunder Break gets stronger. This attack deals 10% damage + the self inflicted damage of Sanguine Lightning
  • This powerful attack drains Iroh of his remaining Sanguine Lightning charge and ends the mode prematurely.
  • If this attack connects in mid air, Iroh will carry his opponents downward until he either hits the ground or a blast zone. Tip: The carried enemy will hit the blast zone before Iroh for those bad manners victories!
  • This move has super armor on it, so don't try to interrupt it, just get out of the way or parry it.


Other Notes:
  • Dair is jump and special cancelable after a specific time window. This window is shorter while Sanguine Lightning is active.
  • Uspecial has moderate kill power at best, but if you land a sweet spot at high altitude, you can get early kills as you ladder your opponents into the blast zone.

@Dingergum Thanks. I'm glad you enjoy him.

@C0ld Ramen Thanks a lot! Dan and the team took an initial look at Iroh a long time ago (Dan personally really liked him), but Iroh has some crucial flaws in his game play design that pretty much made him unusable. Basically the ability to chain long combos very easily, while fun to do, is really not fun to play against. If Dan and the crew were to ask me to change things for Iroh to get such a treatment, I would make any changes necessary though. I appreciate the thought.

I just absolutely adore this character and I really hope that Iroh gets the Hodan, Pomme, Mollo, and Olympia treatment.

I really enjoy this character, but I would like it if the flashing of the character's meter when usable was less vibrant. It's quite harsh on the eyes as-is.

Brilliant sprite work and enjoyable concept otherwise!

Hey guys. About the Definitive Edition. I'm actually not a part of that project. That is a different team who wanted to "fix Iroh" so you'll have to find them elsewhere. Sorry.

Sorry about the Taunt Yoshi, I'll take a look at it.
