Jedi Academy: Improvement Guide
By Sheik Yerbouti
Before we even start off the guide, go ahead and make sure every setting is set to it's highest. That goes for textures, models, dynamic glow, all that good stuff. Go ahead and enable the "Detail Textures" feature while you're at it.

The Improvements, what they do, and download links
First things first, we need to improve the sound quality, enable Widescreen, and improve performance.
YOU MAY ALSO WANT OPENJK BECAUSE IT FIXES ALLOT AND ALLOWS YOU TO ALT+TAB

OpenJK Download[builds.openjk.org]
Install by extracting the latest file into Jedi Academy's installation folder.
Delete/Rename JASP.EXE and JAMP.EXE, and rename "openjk_sp.x86.exe" to "JASP.EXE". Do the same with "openjk.x86.exe" and rename to "JAMP.EXE".

I would highly recommend all of you download OpenJK because it has several fixes over the original and runs much better on modern systems.

Sound Quality
  • Open the game's console
  • Type s_khz 44
  • Type snd_restart
The sound quality should be greatly improved now.
NOTE:If you have EAX enabled, sound will be 22khz no matter what. You can have EAX, or you can have HD sound. You can't have both. Still looking for fixes.

Widscreen
This shouldn't qualify if you download OpenJK. I believe it adds widescreen support
  • Open the game's console
  • Type r_customwidth (YOUR VALUE HERE), and r_customheight (YOUR VALUE HERE)
  • Type r_mode -1
  • Type vid_restart
The game should fill your monitor's screen

Bad Performance
  • Disable flares

Full body dismemberment in Single Player
I hate the lousy cheat that increases the saber's damage. It makes the game easier in some areas, but also harder. Because of this, I made my own file that fixes the dismemberment.
"However, there are still issues"
The maximum amount of enemies that can be dismembered is 25 (My friend told me this. Credit to him later in the credits section of this guide). I do not know how to change this. With that, it can only be 1 - 2 limbs dismembered at a time on one character that (as far as I know) is not a droid/robot.

Mati Hooti's Assorted fixes for Jedi Academy[community.pcgamingwiki.com]
This mod adds a red colored blade to single player, music to the single player main menu and subtitles for most of the dialogue in gameplay.

Star Wars: Jedi Knight & Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy intro skip[community.pcgamingwiki.com]
Does exactly as the title implies.

The Jedi Academy Texture Overhaul Full[jkhub.org]
This is a mod that improves the game's "old" textures. I recommend this one if your computer is older or slower than most new ones.

Jedi Academy 2019 Edition - 4k Textures[www.nexusmods.com]
This mod greatly improves the textures. This mod was done using Gigapixel AI to upscale the textures to 4K. I would only recommend this if your computer is very powerful/fast. With the game looking slightly better, the loading screens are much longer. The first level of the game took at least 2 minutes to load. Results may differ with other's PCs, however.

EpIII Sabers & Effects[jkhub.org]
This mod improves the saber effects.

Elegance HUD[jkhub.org]
Replaces the HUD. Will not say it improves it because that's up to you.

High Quality Crosshairs[jkhub.org]
Upscales the crosshairs

High Quality Icons[jkhub.org]
Upscales the weapon and force icons

High Quality Fonts[jkhub.org]
Upscales the fonts

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Crosshair[jkhub.org]
This crosshair replaces the default crosshair (cg_drawcrosshair 1. If you download this mod, you can still use the original via typing "cg_drawcrosshair 9" in the console). I recommend this crosshair because it is very easy to see in bright areas.

Better Lightsaber Caps[jkhub.org]
Improves the look of the texture on dismembered characters.

Reshade
Download Here[reshade.me]

  • Open ReShade_Setup_5.1.0.exe
  • Go to Jedi Academy's gamedata folder, and select "jasp.exe"
  • Select OpenGL in the installation prompt
  • Select everything (If I knew what I selected, I'd put it here)
  • Look through every page before clicking "Next".

Now that you've made sure you have those settings checked, launch Jedi Academy. There should be a loading bar on the top part of your screen. That is reshade taking effect. Press "HOME" on the keyboard to open Reshade. Now configure the settings to your liking.

Restoring EAX Surround Sound
Quick Side Notes
Dynamic glow will greatly reduce the frame rate, and so will volumetric shadows. If you want to play the game without very noticeable drops in framerate, keep these settings off. However, there is a second option. Typing "cg_shadows 3" into the console (Without quotation marks) will create shadows that entirely black, but will grow and move with the lighting. However, they tend to clip through objects because they are not exactly real shadows, but stencils of the player. They look better on flat areas, but extremely worse in areas with uneven terrain.

Oh, and yea, I moved the game from my E drive to C drive

I just got it fixed, for some weird reason that DDL was causing me issues. I had in in the GameData folder, and all I did was delete OpenJK and installed the 2nd newest version.

I'd recommend verifying the game's files through Steam

I should of worded that differently, I removed all of the ones I installed, not the asset packs. And from what I can tell, jagamex86 seems to be the culprit. I don't think it's loading properly.

Wait wait wait, you removed ALL your pk3s???
EverMore27 May 2, 2024 @ 9:29pm
I keep getting this error after creating my character, "Error: SV_SetUserinfo: bad index 970". I removed all my PK3 files and still had this issue. My guess is maybe openjk? I'm only using things listed in this guide.

I'd assume so, I've not touched multiplayer in forever

If i use OpenJK, do i still need to install JA+ for playing on some servers?
Sheik Yerbouti  [author] Feb 10, 2024 @ 10:02am
The game will say it's not responding during loading if you click the mouse, but it's just loading. This problem occurs with other Quake 3 games, like Call of Duty and RTCW

I tried with no texture mods. Still had it freeze up
