Fafnir Shuttle [block 3]

Descriere

A rocketpunk shuttle.
⨴ This ship is fitted with a landing computer. Glide in, flip the nose up, and press [1] - the computer will land the ship for you.
⨴ While you can land it manually, that's a rather horrid affair. The ship is heavy, and the landing legs weak.

The Fafnir is the central ship of the book "...And A Star To Steer Her By" (which was written in 1953).

It's a Ring-class shuttle; named for a series of Wagner operas and built by German hands, they are a sturdy and well-built series of nuclear rocketships. However, they are old - few modern ships have a retractable jack or sharply angled wings or fins anymore. And it shows - it is quite an ordeal for the ship's crew to make the journey from Mars to Earth.

Even so, it is a ship with plenty of life left in it, and it receives an overhaul at the end - ensuring it will ply the orbitals for many years yet. This is the ship you see before you.

This ship is... unrealistic. No craft for a long, long time will be able to get away with landing on Earth without a heat shield, and certainly no craft ever will use wings quite like this ship. It's a relic of common understanding of spacecraft in the 1950s.
But damn if it ain't one of the coolest things on the planet.

(Apart from that, though, it's still a fairly solid piece of rocket science with plenty of thought behind it.)

This thing is the epitome of '50s rocketpunk aesthetic.

This is a from-the-ground-up rebuild. The previous version was built from one image (which didn't capture the whole ship) and used steam and wood. Not a good combination on a rocket - and it has been my intention to fix that for quite a while, but my skills haven't been up to the challenge until recently. Since then, a full schematic has turned up - and it is radically different from what I thought it looked like.
In contrast to the first version, which was as simple as possible, I've slapped as much detail as I can on this ship - windows, hatches, markings, and more.

I present to you - the Fafnir.
